UMI MICROFILM COLLECTIONS
by Sue Budlong
10 June 1990
------------------------------------------------
University Microfilms International (UMI) had a booth at the
NGS conference in Arlington, VA, and I picked up a couple of their
handouts. You know, they're the people who put out most of the
city directories on microfilm, plus a number of series on
historical subjects.
They have at least three series that looked of great interest
to genealogists and family historians. The prices for their films
are such that most individuals wouldn't want to buy them, but you
can always suggest a purchase to your local library or historical
society and hope they have enough money to do something about it!
Or maybe they already have some of those "in print," and now
you'll know to ask about them....
The three sets of films include a 19-part series on Genealogy
and Local History. Each "part" includes several hundred titles
and hundreds to thousands of microfiche. (I SAID this was for
institutional purchasers!)
Another "package" seems to be based on the above, but is
organized by state; it's called "State Packages of Historical
Materials." Each package contains a Local History section; a
Primary Source section; and a Genealogical Serial section. Though
the handout doesn't say, I would imagine we're again dealing with
sizable, and expensive, collections.
Lastly, they had a news release dated 1 July 1990 announcing
the (current?) filming of a collection entitled "Regimental
Histories of the Civil War," taken from records held by the U.S.
Army Military History Institute at Carlisle Barracks, PA. As best
I can tell, parts of the collection will start becoming available
in the fall of this year.
Anyone desiring more information should write to University
Microfilms International, 300 North Zeeb Road, Ann Arbor, MI
48106. Their main phone number is 313-761-4700; their "research
collections" number is 1-800-520-0600.
