  19. not familiar with the term shareware, please read the section
  20. titled "Registration of ANCESTR".  Continued use of this program
  21. requires registration and payment of a registration fee.  The

  23. trial basis for not more than thirty (30) days.  If the program is

  27. ANCESTR PROGRAM
  28.  
  29.        The ANCESTR program was developed to ease the using of data
  30. from the International Genealogical Index (IGI) with the Personal
  31. Ancestral File (PAF) program.  There is a wealth of genealogical
  32. data in the IGI which is available to be copied to floppy disks at
  33. many Family History Centers operated by the Church of Jesus Christ
  34. of Latter Day Saints.  
  35.  
  36.        Data copied from the Ancestral File may be copied onto floppy
  37. disk as families if such data is in the files.  For the Ancestral
  38. file this output is highly organized and is easy to enter into and
  39. use in the PAF.  Data from the IGI, however, is written out as
  40. individuals and the same individual may appear in the GEDCOM file
  41. numerous times.  When such data is read into PAF it is cumbersome
  42. to attempt to form families and to eliminate all the extra entries.
  43.  
  44.        This program is an attempt to provide a simpler means of
  45. transferring data from the IGI to PAF without needing to print the
  46. GEDCOM file and manually enter the data.  This program was
  47. developed to read the GEDCOM files produced from the IGI or the
  48. Ancestral File and then provide the ability to organize the
  49. individual data into family structures.  The ANCESTR program will
  50. then write a new GEDCOM file for transfer into PAF.  Capability is
  51. also available to edit individual and marriage data, merge
  52. individual records, and to modify family structures.
  53.  
  54.        The program requires a hard drive and will use approximately
  55. one million bytes of disk space.  It also requires the following to
  56. be in the CONFIG.SYS file:

  60. The AUTOEXEC.BAT file must contain:

  62.        SET CLIPPER=F:35
  63.  
  64. or you may type this on the DOS command line prior to running
  65. ANCESTR.
  66.  
  67.        See your DOS manual for further information about setting the
  68. DOS environment.

  70.        Installation of the program is accomplished by copying the
  71. contents of the ZIP file into a subdirectory and then making the
  72. subdirectory current.  If you wanted to use a subdirectory
  73. <ancestr>, at the DOS prompt you would type:

  77.        copy ancestr.zip \ancestr

  79.        cd \ancestr

  84.        You may want to install this program in the same subdirectory
  85. as PAF.  If this is the case you would type instead:

  87.        copy ancestr.zip \paf

  93.        Then follow the instructions to install and run the program
  94. that are contained in the online help.  On line help is accessed
  95. with the F1 key.  The program is executed by typing its name at the
  96. DOS prompt when the subdirectory containing the program is current. 
  97. This is accomplished by typing:

  109.        The Ancestr program provides the capability to easily review
  110. all the data copied from the IGI and makes practical copying fair
  111. amounts of data to review at home at your leisure.  You can then
  112. select the individuals that are a part of your family and create a
  113. new GEDCOM file for entry into PAF.

  115.        The IGI provides a wonderful capability of listing and copying
  116. lists of potential children for a set of parents.  The ANCESTR
  117. program is particularly useful in selecting real families from such
  118. lists and eliminating all the extra entries.
  119.  
  120.        I wrote this program to simplify the adding of data to my PAF
  121. files which I obtained from the IGI.  I often search the IGI for
  122. children of two parents and copy all possible children to a floppy
  123. disk.  Adding the data to my PAF files was cumbersome.
  124.  
  125.        ANCESTR displays the copied data in a tabular format and
  126. allows merging of the duplicate names and forming families easily. 
  127. The procedure I use is to tag the mothers of the children I wish to
  128. include in a family using the F3 key.  Then select the MENU (F2)
  129. and select MERGE.  Highlite the mother and select FAMILY (F6). then
  130. tag all the spouses (F3) and select MENU (F2) and again MERGE. 
  131. Pressing F6 will now display the resultant family which can be
  132. written out as a GEDCOM file.

  168. The first time it is run it will enter a setup process.  Use the F1
  169. key for guidance on setting up the program.  You may alter the
  170. setup at any time by initiating the program with an 's' parameter.

  182. document) and mail it along with the proper registration fee.  You
  183. will receive a registration acknowledgement within 2 to 4 weeks.
