  15. The Vocabulator (c) helps you learn nine foreign languages
  16. quickly and easily.
  17.  
  18. It helps overcome the essential problem with learning a foreign
  19. language - the fact that most people have so much difficulty
  20. acquiring enough vocabulary that they cannot comprehend the
  21. structure and pronunciation of the language which is being
  22.  taught by Teacher, Tape, Friend or Lover.
  23.  
  24. It gives you the means to quickly learn a hard core of around
  25. 500 words in a number of languages.
  26.  
  27. It also gives you the ability to add new words and phrases,
  28. change translations to a form which suits your way of remembering
  29. things, or even to generate a learning vocabulary for a completely
  30. new language!

  33. HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
  34. ==================================

  36. The Vocabulator (c) requires an IBM PC, XT, AT, PS2 or EISA 100%
  37. compatible with at least 400kB free memory.
  38.  
  39. The program as supplied requires a hard disk with at least 1 Mb free.
  40.  
  41. To run The Vocabulator (c) from a diskette with less than 1Mb,
  42. you will first have to install the program on a friends' hard
  43. disk, then you may have to delete some language libraries which
  44. you do not need, or make different diskettes for different
  45. groups of languages. Each diskette needs the following files:
  46.  
  47.         VOCAB.EXE     (The Program file)
  48.  
  49.         VOCAB.HLP    (If you need help)
  50.  
  51.         <Language>.*     (Files for languages you wish to use).
  52.  
  53. The program supports any screen which emulates MONOCHROME, CGA, EGA,
  54. VGA, SVGA or HERCULES (c) standards, but contrast problems may be
  55. experienced when using a CGA card with a Black and White screen.
  56.  
  57. The program requires MS DOS (c), or IBM DOS (c) Version 3.xx or higher.

  59.  
  60. HOW TO GET THE VOCABULATOR TO RUN
  61. =================================
  62.  
  63. 1. You should have received the following files on your
  64. distribution diskette:
  65.  
  66.         VOCAB310.EXE
  67.         GO.BAT
  68.         INSTALL.EXE
  69.         READ.ME
  70.         README.BAT
  71.         START.BAT
  72.  
  73. 2. Log to the drive which contains these Vocabulator (c) files.
  74.  
  75. 3. Run the install program by typing "INSTALL".
  76.  
  77. 4. Select <R>egistration option and print a registration form.
  78.  
  79. 5. You may also print this manual from the same menu.
  80.  
  81. 6. Then execute the <I>nstall option from the menu, which
  82. will copy all necessary files onto your hard drive, then install,
  83. and run the program.
  84.  
  85. For example:
  86.         A:        (Log to A: drive)
  87.         INSTALL        (Executes install program)
  88.  
  89. If you don't like installation programs:
  90.  
  91. Copy the file VOCAB310.EXE into a suitable directory on your hard
  92. drive, log into this directory and type "VOCAB310" to uncompress
  93. the files, and then type "VOCAB" to execute the program.

  103. If you received your files from a BBS, you will have received the
  104. single compressed file VOCAB310.<ZIP> (or some other compression
  105. routine file extension).

  107. To have got this far, you will already have used the decompression
  108. utility chosen by your BBS to uncompress the file.
  109.  
  110. Now use the install routine as described above to uncompress, and
  111. run the program.
  112.

  114. AFTER INSTALLATION
  115. ==================
  116.  
  117. Remember to register your copy of The Vocabulator (c) if you
  118. like and plan to use it. To do this, run the program "INSTALL"
  119. and select the <R>egistration option, which will print out a
  120. registration form. Complete this form and return it, together
  121. with your registration fee, to the address on the form.
  122.  
  123. After the registration form had been printed and mailed, it is
  124. only necessary to type "VOCAB" after logging to the correct
  125. directory.
  126.  
  127. If you have any doubt about your comprehension of the statements
  128. made above, we would strongly recommend that you read the rest
  129. of this manual BEFORE you decide to use the program.

  131. The Vocabulator (c) is distributed under "Shareware".
  132.  
  133. WHAT IS SHAREWARE?
  134. ==================
  135.  
  136. Shareware gives users a chance to "TRY BEFORE YOU BUY". If you
  137. try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected
  138. to register. Individual programs differ on details- some request
  139. registration while others require it, some specify a maximum
  140. trial period. With registration, you get anything from the
  141. simple right to continue using the software to an updated
  142. program with printed manual.

  144. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and Commercial software,
  145. and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  146. exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
  147. programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
  148. of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
  149. and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
  150. distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
  151. and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  152. specific group. For example, some authors require written
  153. permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
  154. Shareware.

  156. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
  157. should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
  158. whether it's Commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
  159. fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
  160. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
  161. has the ultimate money-back guarantee - if you don't use the
  162. product, you don't pay for it.

  201. The Vocabulator (c) is supplied as is. The author disclaims all
  202. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
  203. the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any
  204. purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or
  205. consequential, which may result from the use of The Vocabulator (c).

  207. The Vocabulator (c) is a "shareware program" and is provided at
  208. no charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with
  209. your friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part
  210. of another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is
  211. to provide personal computer users with quality software without
  212. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  213. continue to develop new products.  If you find this program
  214. useful and find that you are using The Vocabulator (c) and
  215. continue to use The Vocabulator (c) after a reasonable trial
  216. period, you must make a registration payment of $25 to BLUE
  217. BULL. The $25 registration fee will license one copy for use on
  218. any one computer at any one time. You must treat this software
  219. just like a book. An example is that this software may be used
  220. by any number of people and may be freely moved from one
  221. computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility
  222. of it being used at one location while it's being used at
  223. another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons
  224. at the same time.

  226. Commercial users of The Vocabulator (c) must register and pay
  227. for their copies of The Vocabulator (c) within 30 days of first
  228. use or their license is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may
  229. be made by contacting BLUE BULL.

  231. Anyone distributing The Vocabulator (c) for any kind of
  232. remuneration must first contact BLUE BULL at the address below
  233. for authorization. This authorization will be automatically
  234. granted to distributors recognized by the ASP as adhering to its
  235. guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors may
  236. begin offering The Vocabulator (c) immediately (However BLUE
  237. BULL must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept
  238. up-to-date with the latest version of The Vocabulator (c)).

  280. reminders each time you enter and leave the program.

  282. Any "meaningful and significant" bugs reported to us will be
  283. corrected, and an updated version forwarded free of charge
  284. within 90 days from your date of registration.

  286. Free support will be provided for 90 days from your date of

  289. You will be mailed details of any updates, or additional data
  290. files which may become available, and will be offered a reduced

  317. support The Vocabulater (c) and BLUE BULL SOFTWARE is unable to
  318. rectify the situation, your registration fee will be refunded in
  319. full. Please explain your situation in detail so we can attempt
  320. to accommodate as wide a range of environments as possible.

  333. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF HOW THE VOCABULATOR WORKS
  334. =================================================
  335.  
  336. The Vocabulator (c) is a program which helps you overcome one of
  337. the biggest problems in learning a new language -- the fact that
  338. you have difficulty in learning pronunciation and structure
  339. because you do not know enough VOCABULARY.
  340.  
  341. The program helps you overcome this problem by giving you a
  342. "flip card" display of common words and phrases.
  343.  
  344. The program uses Industry Standard Menu Selection and
  345. Navigation standards. The Cursor (arrow) keys will move you
  346. around the screens to edit and view data. <F1> will invoke
  347. screens providing assistance relating to the function you are
  348. currently in. <Esc> will abort the current operation, and return
  349. you to the previous higher level of the program.
  350.  
  351. The various options are selected by a "Menu" of options. You
  352. select the option by moving the highlight to the option you wish
  353. to execute, and then press <Enter>. A quick method of making this
  354. selection is also provided simply press the first letter of the
  355. menu option you wish to execute, and the option will execute
  356. directly. The various options are described below.
  357.  
  358. THE PROMPTING ROUTINES
  359. ----------------------
  360.  
  361. The Vocabulator (c) can prompt with YOUR LANGUAGE WORD, where
  362. you want to translate into the foreign language, or with the
  363. FOREIGN LANGUAGE WORD when you want to translate back into your
  364. own language.
  365.  
  366. You can speed up or slow down the prompt speed as your
  367. proficiency in the language improves. You do this by pressing
  368. the up and down arrow keys while in the prompting routines.
  369.  
  370. As you begin to learn more words, you will find that some
  371. well-known words continue to prompt, which tends to waste time,
  372. and makes you feel frustrated. Press <Enter> when such a word is
  373. displayed in the prompt routines, and the word will be removed
  374. until you decide to restore it.
  375.  
  376. This "hiding" routine is also useful when you have just started
  377. with the language - you may well find that there are so many
  378. words that they are not repeated often enough for you to learn
  379. them quickly. All you do then is press <Enter> when the more
  380. difficult words are displayed, until you have a small enough
  381. list of words which you can learn quickly. When you have learnt
  382. these words well, reinstate the other words in order to learn
  383. them.
  384.  
  385. During prompting, you may often find that you are confused, and
  386. wish to think about, or look at previous or similar words. To do
  387. this, press <Space> in the prompting routines, which will halt
  388. the prompting process. You can then look at the previous few
  389. words which are still displayed on screen, or browse through
  390. your vocabulary database by pressing <F1>.
  391.  
  392. ADD/EDIT WORDS ROUTINE
  393. ----------------------
  394.  
  395. The Vocabulator (c) is supplied with databases of about 500
  396. words for a number of common languages. This list has been
  397. recommended to us as THE MOST USEFUL list for a beginner in a
  398. language. If you develop your knowledge beyond the scope of this
  399. list, this routine allows you to add, edit, or delete words as
  400. you wish.

  402. You can even generate your own new language database by means of
  403. this routine as follows:
  404.  
  405. Exit to DOS, and log to the Vocabulator (c) Directory  Type
  406. "COPY BLANK.MAS <Name of your language>.VOC" Type "COPY
  407. BLANK.ORD <Name of your language>.ORD"  Re-enter the Vocabulator
  408. (c), select your new language, and build up a database of the
  409. words you want to learn.

  411. REINSTATE HIDDEN WORDS
  412. ----------------------
  413.  
  414. If you have hidden words in the prompt routine, and now want
  415. them to be returned to the prompting list, execute this option
  416. to restore them.
  417.  
  418. PRINT WORDS
  419. -----------
  420.  
  421. If you want a hard copy of your Vocabulary database, use this
  422. routine to printout the words.
  423.  
  424. CORRECT CORRUPTED FILES
  425. -----------------------
  426.  
  427. In the unlikely event that you find that your data seems to be
  428. corrupted, and words seem to be missing or duplicated, use this
  429. option to attempt to correct these problems. NOTE: These
  430. problems should normally only occur after a power failure while
  431. you are editing words.
  432.  
  433. BACKUP DATA
  434. -----------
  435.  
  436. If you have made modifications to any of your language
  437. libraries, you will want to make regular backups to floppy
  438. disks. To do this, make sure you have a formatted disk in drive
  439. A:, and then execute this option, which will copy your selected
  440. Language Library to the floppy disk.
