  2. THE FIRST THANKSGIVING PROCLAMATION - JUNE 20, 1676:

  5.      "The Holy God having by a long and Continual Series 
  6. of his Afflictive dispensations in and by the present Warr 
  7. with the Heathen Natives of this land, written and brought 
  8. to pass bitter things against his own Covenant people in this 
  9. wilderness, yet so that we evidently discern that in the midst 
  10. of his judgements he hath remembered mercy, having remembered 
  11. his Footstool in the day of his sore displeasure against us for 
  12. our sins, with many singular Intimations of his Fatherly Compassion, 
  13. and regard; reserving many of our Towns from Desolation Threatened,
  14. and attempted by the Enemy, and giving us especially of late with 
  15. many of our Confederates many signal Advantages against them, 
  16. without such Disadvantage to ourselves as formerly we have been 
  17. sensible of, if it be the Lord's mercy that we are not consumed, 
  18. It certainly bespeaks our positive Thankfulness, when our Enemies 
  19. are in any measure disappointed or destroyed; and fearing the 
  20. Lord should take notice under so many Intimations of his 
  21. returning mercy, we should be found an Insensible people, as 
  22. not standing before Him with Thanksgiving, as well as lading 
  23. him with our Complaints in the time of pressing Afflictions:

  25.      The Council has thought meet to appoint and set apart the 
  26. 29th day of this instant June, as a day of Solemn Thanksgiving 
  27. and praise to God for such his Goodness and Favour, many 
  28. Particulars of which mercy might be Instanced, but we doubt not 
  29. those who are sensible of God's Afflictions, have been as diligent 
  30. to espy him returning to us; and that the Lord may behold us as 
  31. a People offering Praise and thereby glorifying Him; the Council 
  32. doth commend it to the Respective Ministers, Elders and people 
  33. of this Jurisdiction; Solemnly and seriously to keep the same 
  34. Beseeching that being perswaded by the mercies of God we may all, 
  35. even this whole people offer up our bodies and soulds as a 
  36. living and acceptable Service unto God by Jesus Christ."

  40. The First Thanksgiving Proclamation (June 20, 1676)

  42. On June 20, 1676, the governing council of Charlestown, 
  43. Massachusetts, held a meeting to determine how best to express 
  44. thanks for the good fortune that had seen their community 
  45. securely established. By unamimous vote they instructed 
  46. Edward Rawson, the clerk, to proclaim June 29 as a day of 
  47. thanksgiving, our first. That proclamation is reproduced here
  48. in the same language and spelling as the original.
