>-INTRO-<
A great many of us fear an extraordinary number of things. It would
be more correct to say, "We have everything to fear including fear itself"
because we are a nation of worriers, full of many different anxieties.
We develop fears of an incredible range of objects: real and imaginary, big
and small, obscure and obvious, and fears of all sorts of peoples, places,
and things.
This is easily seen in many rich and famous people. There is evidence
that successful people are particularly plagued by different fears in
proportion to the amount of power they hold in their lives.
Almost everyone has at least a few phobias, so have no fear it you
think you are alone in finding some of your fears in this program. You have
a lot of company!
Okay, here are some famous people and their phobias:
Alfred Hitchcock had an unusual fear of policemen. Steven Spielberg admits
to having a fear of insects (even though he gave us the famous Indiana Jones
movies which contain scenes with thousands of bugs and snakes). Napoleon
Bonaparte, Alexander the Great, Mussolini, Julius Caesar, and Genghis Khan
all had a fear of cats. Ray Bradbury has a fear of flying and driving cars.
Dean Martin has a fear of elevators. Ed McMahon has a fear of heights.
Willard Scott, TV weatherman and former Bozo the Clown, has a fear of public
speaking. Bob Newhart, Maureen Stapleton, Aretha Franklin, Joanne Woodward,
Johnny Cash, and John Madden are afraid to fly, along with an estimated 25
million other Americans.
>-NOTE-<
All of these phobias are ***AUTHENTIC***, taken from medical and
psychiatric texts and dictionaries and many other reference books.
>-FILES DISTRIBUTED WITH PHOBIAS-<
PHOBIAS.EXE 43612 -> These 2 files are required in order to operate
PHOBIA.DAT 26712 -> PHOBIAS. Make sure they are in the same directory.
PHOBIAS.TXT 20563 -> Text file containing list of all the phobias.
PHOBIAS.DOC 5241 -> This file. Not required for operation but must be
included when distributing PHOBIAS.
>-HOW TO USE THE PROGRAM-<
PHOBIAS is fairly easy to use. Basically, type in PHOBIAS to run the
program and it prints one phobia on the screen. If you stick it into your
AUTOEXEC.BAT each time you boot-up a phobia will be displayed on the screen.
-=/Setup option =
You should first start PHOBIAS with the command:
PHOBIAS /S
The '/S' tells PHOBIAS to enter the Set-Up menu. This menu allows you to
choose among the 3 different methods in which PHOBIAS chooses a phobia.
They are Incrementing, Decrementing, and Random. As their names imply,
the first method goes in alphabetical order, Decrementing goes in reverse
alphabetical order, and Random chooses any old one (which could lead to
repeats).
Also, you are given the option to select which phobia to begin with. By
pressing the 'A' and 'Z' keys you can cycle through the over 300 different
phobias contained in this program. This is also a nice way to just browse
through all the phobias. Anyway, once you've selected the starting phobia
you can save the new set-up by pressing the 4 key, or else abort by pressing
the 5 key. The default values are: Method=(1) Incrementing, starting with
phobia #1.
All changes will take effect next time PHOBIAS is run.
= /Pause option =
If you do decide to include PHOBIAS in your AUTOEXEC.BAT, you might want to
use the /Px option. This pauses for x seconds (a value from 1-9), or until
the user presses a key). Here is an example if you wanted to pause for 4
seconds:
PHOBIAS /P4
>-INSTALLING PHOBIAS IN YOUR AUTOEXEC.BAT-<
First, get into your favorite text editor and load your AUTOEXEC.BAT. Find
a suitable position (usually the end) to place the command to invoke PHOBIAS.
You must then give the command to change to the directory in which both
PHOBIAS.EXE and PHOBIA.DAT are located in. Here is an example:
cd <phobdir> <- PHOBIAS.EXE & PHOBIAS.DAT are located in this directory
phobias /p4 <- invoke PHOBIAS with the /Pause option for 4 seconds.
cd <anywhere> <- change back to your normal directory.
