  1. WHAT IS PIP:
  2.  
  3. Pip* is a completely integrate mail processor and editor, fidonet compatible.
  4. It uses a new compressed message base: PipBase.
  5.  
  6. You'll be able to learn all about PipBase from the hypertextual help PIP.HLP;
  7. to read it, run PIP.EXE
  8.  
  9.  
  10. AUTOMATIC POINT INSTALLATIONS:
  11.  
  12. - if you wuant to install PIP for a point system, you may use the installation
  13.   program INSTALL contained in the Gimme-A-Point archive (starting with rel.4)
  14.  
  15. - remember that Pip* needs a FILES=nn value in your CONFIG.SYS file rather 
  16.   high (FILE=30)
  17.  
  18.  
  19. UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION:
  20.  
  21. - backup old configuration files, if you have a 1.xx version installed
  22.  
  23. - copy PIP.EXE and PIP.HLP in the NODEINFO.CFG directory (your "home"
  24.   directory), or in any directory in your path
  25.  
  26. - if you have enough memory, leave at least 200 Kb of EMS memory
  27.  
  28. - if your computer hangs, try to add a /NOEMS switch when you call PIP
  29.  
  30. - run PIP
  31.  
  32. - read the hypertextual help (you may read it also by running PIP HELP)
  33.  
  34. - recall all setup screens to correct old settings and to set new parameters
  35.  
  36. - report any bug (especially if you're not using a beta version) to Roberto

  39. - if all works fine, delete old executables PIPREPLY.EXE and PIPBASE.EXE
  40.  
  41. - delete old MsgTmp file, if you still have one (now it's called MsgTmp.Lst)

  44. EX-NOVO INSTALLATION (without Gimme-A-Point INSTALL):
  45.  
  46. - create a directory for executable and configuration files
  47.  
  48. - copy PIP.EXE and PIP.HLP in that directory
  49.  
  50. - create a directory for your message base
  51.  
  52. - run PIP HELP SET and read the screen until you've well understood all PIP
  53.   parameters
  54.  
  55. - run PIP SET with appropriate parameters...
  56.  
  57. - run PIP
  58.  
  59. - if your computer hangs, try adding the /NOEMS switch when running PIP
  60.

  65. CAVEATS AND BUGS:
  66.  
  67. These are problems arising from the libraries I used and that I cannot control
  68. (at present), each with its solution
  69.  
  70. - Overlay manager error: add DOS=HIGH,UMB in your CONFIG.SYS (this problem 
  71.   arises only with some DOS versions)
  72.  
  73. - Mysterious hanging: Borland C++ 2.00 overlay manager has some problems with 
  74.   EMS swapping: use /NOEMS switch on the command line (I suggest to made a 
  75.   batch file or an alias to never forget it; if you use Gimme-a-point 
  76.   remember to modify POINT.BAT and MANUT.BAT); this problem may arise also
  77.   if you have EMM386 installed with no EMS memory configured
  78.  
  79. - Strange problems with windows: maybe you're trying to use 50 lines on an
  80.   EGA display or 43 lines on a VGA card? enter with the /25 switch and set
  81.   the correct value in the Setup\Viewer\Lines field (25 is always safe; use
  82.   43 only on EGA displays and 50 on VGA)

  84. - Maurizio Macagno reported that Pip Reply can correctly edit long messages
  85.   with Sled but not with Qedit... Choose an external editor that works
