  1. INSIGHT Demonstration Version Installation Guide
  2. ________________________________________________
  3.  
  4. This guide provides installation procedures for INSIGHT demonstration version. 
  5. The INSIGHT demonstration version differs from the standard versions in the
  6. following three ways:
  7.  
  8. 1 -   Each database can hold a maximum of 100 records.
  9.  
  10. 2 -   The maximum LEN number that can be entered is "000117."
  11.  
  12. 3 -   The demonstration version can be copied and distributed freely as long
  13.       as you include all files and documentation and you do not modify any of
  14.       the programs or documentation.  The demonstration version can be copied
  15.       without penalty as long as you adhere to this additional policy.  This
  16.       policy supersedes the section of the program license which states that
  17.       the program cannot be copied or given to someone (demonstration version
  18.       only).

  20. The demonstration version can be copied by anyone wishing to try the software
  21. or can be obtained directly from On-Line Data Solutions.  This documentation
  22. may also be freely copied and distributed.

  25. INSIGHT Installation Procedure 
  26. ______________________________
  27.  
  28. The following is the list of steps necessary to install INSIGHT.  
  29.  
  30.  
  31. 1.    Put the INSIGHT installation disk in drive A or B.  
  32.  
  33.       Type A:Install 
  34.       
  35.       or B:Install depending on the drive you are using.
  36.  
  37. 2.    After viewing the help text (which pops up automatically when INSTALL
  38.       starts) 
  39.  
  40.       press the ESC key 
  41.  
  42.       to close the help window.
  43.  
  44. 3.    Select the Setup menu by pressing 
  45.  
  46.       ALT-S (ALT key and "S" key simultaneously).  
  47.  
  48. 4.    Select the "Program Configuration" menu choice by pressing the
  49.  
  50.       RETURN key.  
  51.  
  52. 5.    Configure the setup parameters as follows:

  83. Use the TAB key to move through each selection group or use the mouse to point
  84. to the group.  Use the up and down cursor keys when selecting the PBX port and
  85. baud rate.  Use the space bar to toggle the Options on or off.
  86.  
  87. Select the appropriate installation options as follows:
  88.  
  89.       Field                   Description
  90.       _____                   ___________
  91.  
  92.       PBX Port                Number of the serial port of the P.C. that is
  93.                               connected to the PBX.  The default is serial
  94.                               port 1.
  95.  
  96.       PBX Baud                Baud rate of the PBX port.  The default baud
  97.                               rate is 9600.
  98.  
  99.       Check AUTOEXEC.BAT      INSIGHT functions best when its directory exists
  100.                               on the MS-DOS path (see the MS-DOS user's guide
  101.                               for details about paths).  If this option is
  102.                               enabled, INSTALL will automatically update your
  103.                               AUTOEXEC.BAT file if the INSIGHT program path is
  104.                               not already there.
  105.  
  106.       Check CONFIG.SYS        INSIGHT requires that a minimum of 60 DOS files
  107.                               be available for proper operation.  The number
  108.                               of DOS files available is configured in the
  109.                               CONFIG.SYS file in the form of "FILES=XXX" where
  110.                               XXX can be from 8 to 255.  If this option is
  111.                               enabled INSTALL will automatically update your
  112.                               CONFIG.SYS file if less than 60 files are
  113.                               configured.

  115.       Install Program To      Directory in which to install the INSIGHT
  116.                               program.  If the directory you specify does not
  117.                               exist it will be created.  When this field is
  118.                               first selected the text will be highlighted.  If
  119.                               any keys are pressed at this point the entire
  120.                               text will be erased.  If you want to edit this
  121.                               text without erasing it use the right cursor key
  122.                               to move to the area that you want to edit. 
  123.                               After the cursor is moved from the first
  124.                               character the highlighting of the text will
  125.                               disappear and the text will not automatically
  126.                               erase.

  128.       Database Path           This is the directory in which to store the
  129.                               INSIGHT database files.  If the directory you
  130.                               specify does not exist it will be created.  When
  131.                               this field is first selected the text will be
  132.                               highlighted.  If any keys are pressed at this
  133.                               point the entire text will be erased.  If you
  134.                               want to edit this text without erasing it use
  135.                               the right cursor key to move to the area that
  136.                               you want to edit.  After the cursor is moved
  137.                               from the first character the highlighting of the
  138.                               text will disappear and the text will not
  139.                               automatically erase.

  142. The following is a list of dialog buttons and their functions:
  143.

  152. 6.    Select the Install menu by pressing 
  153.  
  154.       ALT-I (ALT key and "I" key simultaneously).  
  155.  
  156. 7.    Select the "Do It" menu choice by pressing the
  157.  
  158.       RETURN key.
  159.  
  160.       Answer "Yes" to the install confirmation dialog by pressing the
  161.  
  162.       RETURN key. While the program is being installed the status dialog will display the
  163.       installation progress.
  164.  
  165.  
  166. Installation Processes:
  167.  
  168.       Initializing            INSTALL is verifying disk drive types and free
  169.                               space available on the destination drive (where
  170.                               the program is to be installed).  
  171.  
  172.       Creating Directories    INSTALL is attempting to create the directories
  173.                               specified in the "Setup" command.
  174.  
  175.       Extracting Program 
  176.       Files                   INSTALL is creating the INSIGHT program files in
  177.                               the specified program directory.  This procedure
  178.                               will take a few minutes.
  179.  
  180.       Extracting Database
  181.       Files                   INSTALL is creating the default database files
  182.                               in the specified database directory.  
  183.  
  184.       Checking AUTOEXEC.BAT   INSTALL is checking the PATH statement in the
  185.                               AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  186.  
  187.       Checking CONFIG.SYS     INSTALL is checking the FILES statement in the
  188.                               CONFIG.SYS file.
  189.  
  190.       Installation Complete   The installation process is done.  Press ESC to
  191.                               close the installation process dialog box.
  192.

  195. 8.    After the installation is complete, INSTALL will prompt you to reboot
  196.       your PC if the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files have been updated.
  197.  
  198.       If either of the files have been updated choose "Yes" to reboot the PC. 
  199.       INSTALL will ask you to remove the installation disk and press RETURN. 
  200.       This will cause the PC to reboot.
  201.  
  202.       If the files have not been updated press ESC or ALT-F3 to close the
  203.       installation process dialog box.  Press ALT-X to exit from INSTALL.
  204.  
  205. 9.    Installation has now been completed.  To run INSIGHT, type 
  206.  
  207.             INSIGHT
  208.  
  209.       at the DOS prompt. Installation Errors
  210. ___________________
  211.  
  212. The following is a list of errors that could occur during the installation
  213. process and their meanings:
  214.  
  215.  
  216.       Destination drive for program is not a hard disk - INSIGHT can be
  217.       installed only on a hard disk.
  218.  
  219.       Destination drive for database is not a hard disk - INSIGHT database
  220.       files can be installed only on a hard disk.
  221.  
  222.       Not Enough Free Space On Destination Drive - INSTALL will not install
  223.       INSIGHT if the free space on the destination drive is too small. 
  224.       Install the program to another drive or free some space on the current
  225.       destination drive.
  226.  
  227.       Disk Error - This is a general disk error.  Verify the installation
  228.       floppy disk and the destination drive.
  229.  
  230.       Error Reading Disk - This is an error of the installation disk.  Make
  231.       sure you're using the original floppy disk for installation.
  232.  
  233.       Disk Is Write Protected... - Remove the write-protect label from the
  234.       installation disk.
  235.  
  236.       Unable To Create Directory - Check to make sure that the directory you
  237.       entered in the "Setup" command is a valid DOS directory.
  238.  
  239. On-Line Manual
  240. ______________
  241.  
  242. INSIGHT includes an On-Line Manual module.  The on-line manual, MANUAL.EXE,
  243. can be used to: 
  244.  
  245.       o     view the INSIGHT documentation on-line
  246.  
  247.       o     send the documentation to a printer 
  248.  
  249.       o     send the documentation to a disk file.  
  250.  
  251.  
  252. There are two ways to access the on-line manual:
  253.  
  254.       o     From INSIGHT select the "Modules│Insight On-Line Manual" menu
  255.             choice.
  256.  
  257.       o     From DOS type "Manual Insight" 
  258.  
  259.             If MANUAL.EXE is not in the current disk directory, and is not in
  260.             a directory that is part of your MS-DOS path you will need to
  261.             change your default directory to the one that contains MANUAL.EXE
  262.             (if you configured the INSIGHT installation program to update your
  263.             AUTOEXEC.BAT file the MANUAL.EXE program will be in a directory
  264.             that is in your MS-DOS path).

  295. manual itself (the screen on the previous page shows the first page of the
  296. INSIGHT license agreement) and the lower section (the status box) contains
  297. page status and command hints.

  300. The Status Box

  303. The status box displays the page status and command hints.  
  304.  
  305. The top line (the page status) displays the current chapter (with the total
  306. number of chapters between square brackets), an up and down arrow indicating
  307. whether more text is above and/or below the currently displayed text, and the
  308. current page number (with the total number of pages in the manual between
  309. square brackets).  
  310.  
  311. The lower line of the status box contains hints regarding manual navigation.

  335.       C(n)        Select a chapter to jump to.  When you press the "C" key a
  336.                   box will pop up in which to enter the chapter number to jump
  337.                   to.

  339.       Ctrl P      Print the manual.  The manual can be printed by page or by
  340.                   chapter.  A box will pop up in which you can select the
  341.                   portions of the manual to print.  You can also send the
  342.                   entire  manual to the printer ("PRN" is the default) or to a
  343.                   disk file.

  345.       F1-Help     Pop up the help dialog.

  351. The manual viewer has a pop up help dialog which is accessed by pressing the
  352. F1 key.  The help dialog (shown below) displays help for navigating the on-
  353. line manual.

  412.                         implemented to prevent your computer monitor from
  413.                         becoming burned in (burn in occurs when the monitor
  414.                         displays the same text for long periods).  The default
  415.                         number of seconds before the screen saver becomes
  416.                         active is 150 and can be set from 0 to 600 seconds
  417.                         (setting the screen saver to 0 will disable the screen
  418.                         save function).

  420.       F2                Display ABOUT Box.  The dialog is a box that pops up
  421.                         containing version and copyright information.

  423.       Alt-X             Exit the On-line Manual.
