  1. dInstallation
  2.  
  3. Enter the drive and directory you wish to install Boots to. For
  4. Boots to work correctly, you must install it to the drive you
  5. boot from (usually drive "C"). You must also specify a directory
  6. to install Boots to. You cannot install Boots to the root
  7. directory.
  8.  
  9. eMain Menu
  10.  
  11. Select a configuration using the arrow keys, PgUp-PgDn, Home-End.
  12.  
  13. Press "A" to add a configuration.
  14. Press "E" to edit the selected configuration.
  15. Press "D" to delete the selected configuration.
  16. Press "M" to move the selected configuration to another place on
  17. the list.
  18. Press "S" to change Boots' settings.
  19.  
  20. Press Enter or one of the function keys to make a selected
  21. configuration active and reboot. (Applicable only when Boots
  22. is setup for this mode of operation. For more info, go to the
  23. "Setup" menu, highlight "Mode of Operation", and press Alt-H.)
  24. fEdit Configuration
  25.  
  26. Press F1 to edit the CONFIG file. Press F2 to edit the AUTOEXEC
  27. file. Press F3 to edit the configuration name and extension. When
  28. using the internal editor, use the following keys:
  29.  
  30.          Arrow keys .... Move cursor in that direction.
  31.          Home/End ...... Move cursor to start/end of line.
  32.          PgUp/PgDn ..... Move cursor up/down one page.
  33.          Ctrl-Home/End . Move cursor to start/end of file.
  34.          Insert ........ Toggle insert/overwrite mode.
  35.          Delete ........ Delete character at cursor.
  36.          Enter ......... Insert or break current line.

  38. gAdd Configuration
  39.  
  40. Select "Start From Scratch" to create a new configuration from
  41. scratch.
  42.  
  43. Select "Model After Selected" to create a new configuration
  44. patterned after the currently selected configuration's CONFIG and
  45. AUTOEXEC files.
  46.  
  47. Select "Model After Current" to create a new configuration
  48. patterned after the current CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
  49. This is useful for when you've installed a new program and it has
  50. modified the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and you wish to
  51. create a custom configuration for that program.

  53. iMode of Operation
  54.  
  55. Boots allows you to select a configuration either during boot time
  56. or after. The default is "Select During Boot". If you rather run
  57. Boots only when you need to change configurations instead of
  58. selecting each time you boot up, then select "Select After Boot".
  59.  
  60. "Select During Boot" Mode: The main menu will appear each time you
  61. boot up. Press the desired function key (F1-F10), the Enter key,
  62. or the first letter of the Extension to select that configuration.
  63.  
  64. "Select After Boot" Mode: From the main menu, press the desired
  65. function key (F1-F10) or the Enter key to have Boots reboot your
  66. computer using the specified configuration. See manual for
  67. information on selecting a configuration from the command line.
  68. jIdle Time Seconds
  69.  
  70. NOTE: Applies only to "Select During Boot" mode of operation.
  71.  
  72. During boot up, the main menu will appear in which you may select
  73. a configuration. If the number of seconds specified in "Idle Time"
  74. elapses before a key is pressed, the default configuration (the
  75. first one on the menu) will automatically be selected. Set "Idle
  76. Time" to zero to turn off this feature.

  78. kReboot Type
  79.  
  80. NOTE: Applies only to "Select After Boot" mode of operation.
  81.  
  82. This option allows you to specify the type of reboot that should
  83. be performed after a configuration is selected from the main menu.
  84. A warm boot is equivalent to pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del. A cold boot
  85. is equivalent to switching the power off and then on again.

  87. lPassword
  88.  
  89. NOTE: Applies only to "Select During Boot" mode of operation.

  91. Boots will optionally password protect your computer from being
  92. booted. Each time you boot up, Boots will ask you for the
  93. password. Enter the correct password and booting will continue.
  94. Enter the wrong password 3 times and the boot process will stop.
  95.  
  96. To activate this option, enter a password. To deactivate,
  97. backspace over the old password so that none is entered.
  98.  
  99. NOTE: You can still boot your computer from a floppy disk.

  101. mExternal Editor
  102.  
  103. Boots provides its own editor for editing configurations.
  104. If you rather use your own, enter the drive, directory, and
  105. program name here. Example:

  107.                     C:\DOS\EDIT.COM
  108.  
  109. To switch back to using the Boots internal editor, backspace
  110. over the editor file specification until none is entered.
  111.  
  112. nClear Screen
  113.  
  114. NOTE: Applies only to "Select During Boot" mode of operation.
  115.  
  116. Set this option to "Yes" if you wish the screen to be cleared
  117. before the Boots selection menu is displayed during boot-up.
  118.  
  119. oFlush Cache Command
  120.  
  121. NOTE: Applies only to "Select After Boot" mode of operation.
  122.  
  123. If you use a disk cache program, the cache should be flushed
  124. before re-booting. This option allows you to enter the cache
  125. program name including the drive, directory, and parameter(s)
  126. needed to flush it. Example: Windows uses a cache named SMARTDRV.
  127. To have this cache flushed before rebooting, you might enter:

  129.                 C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE /C
  130.  
  131. NOTE: If the "Flush Cache Command" should run a batch file which
  132. in turn flushes the cache, you must use COMMAND.COM to run the
  133. batch file. Example: C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM /C FLUSH.BAT
  134. pEnvironment
  135.  
  136. This option allows you to indicate the environment Boots is
  137. running in. Select "Normal" for a normal DOS environment. Select
  138. "SuperStor" for a SuperStor environment. Select "DoubleSpace" if
  139. you're using DOS 6.x DoubleSpace.
  140.  
  141. SuperStor Environment: Boots must be installed on the uncompressed
  142. boot drive. During boot time this is drive letter C: but is then
  143. swapped for the drive letter of the compressed disk.
  144.  
  145. qLock Keys
  146.  
  147. NOTE: Applies only to "Select During Boot" mode of operation.
  148.  
  149. Boots will optionally set the state of your Caps, Num, and Scroll
  150. Lock keys during boot time. For each Lock key, you may select
  151. "No change", "On", or "Off". Select "No change" to prevent Boots
  152. from changing the state of that Lock key. Select "On" or "Off"
  153. to have Boots change the state of that Lock key to on or off.

  155. rColor
  156.  
  157. This option allows you to select a color scheme for the Boots main
  158. menu and edit window. The default color scheme is "Ocean". Boots
  159. will optionally cycle through the available color schemes each time
  160. activated (either during boot time or after). To have Boots cycle,
  161. select the "Cycle" color scheme.
  162.  
  163. sReinstallation
  164.  
  165. If you are reinstalling Boots over a previously installed copy and
  166. you wish to retain your configurations, you must indicate which
  167. version of Boots you are reinstalling over. If you wish to install
  168. without saving your old settings, select "Install without saving
  169. old settings" option.
