  35. 1. General Notes
  36. ================
  37.   IMPORTANT!
  38.   You must IMPERATIVELY read this README file and all the documentation
  39.   supplied BEFORE you continue the installation!
  40.   Otherwise SPEA cannot accept any responsibility for claims that may be
  41.   caused as a consequence.
  42.  
  43.   Please be aware that you can only take full advantage of the
  44.   features provided by the SHOWTIME PLUS, if the other components of
  45.   your system, especially the graphic monitor that is being used,
  46.   also comply with the specifications of the SHOWTIME PLUS.
  47.   (Example : The resolution 1280x1024 that is supported by the
  48.   SHOWTIME PLUS can obviously not be used with a monitor that is
  49.   specified to only support resolutions up to 1024x768).
  50.  
  51. 2. Hardware configuration
  52. =========================
  53. PCI bus:
  54.   Especially important is the correct configuration of your PCI mother-
  55.   board. The PCI Interrupt A (INT A) must be assigned to one of the
  56.   available system interrupts (e.g. 10).
  57.  
  58.   1. Please check in the manual of your motherboard whether a jumper
  59.   needs to be set. Jumpers are often used to assign system interrupts
  60.   to either an ISA of PCI slot. Assign the interrupt to the PCI slot
  61.   to be used with the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS.
  62.  
  63.   2. Start the SETUP program of your PC and assign the system inter-
  64.   rupt to INT A for the PCI expansion slot the SPEA SHOWTIME Plus will
  65.   be installed in. For newer motherboards you can also use the Trigger
  66.   method for setting the interrupt. Select 'Level' or 'Auto' for the
  67.   slot you will use.
  68.  
  69.   Most recent motherboards work with a PLUG & PLAY BIOS. If you have
  70.   such a PCI system, its BIOS will do the interrupt configuration
  71.   automatically.
  72.  
  73.   VL bus:
  74.   The configuration of the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS VL will automatically be
  75.   started during the reboot after the software installation with the
  76.   program STINIT.
  77.   Select a free system interrupt and confirm your selection with the
  78.   ENTER key. We recommend interrupt #10 for the VL board.
  79.   Note: Reserved interrupts will be marked by the program.
  80.  
  81.   Note:
  82.   -----
  83.   At the end of the installation, some hardware tests will proceed. If
  84.   problems with the configuration occure, the installation will abort
  85.   with an error massage. In this case, please proof your system again.
  86.   To run the test again, call <drive>:\\SPEA\SHOWTIME\STTEST
  87.  
  88.   If you get an error massage while testing
  89.         Composite-Video and
  90.         SVHS-Video
  91.   no input source is connected to the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS VideoIn.
  92.   Several hardware tests are performed at the end of the installation
  93.   procedure. The installation will be aborted with an error message
  94.   if the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS could not be successfully installed in your
  95.   system. In this case, check again your system configuration.
  96.  
  97.   The hardware test may be started again by entering the following
  98.   command:
  99.          \SPEA\SHOWTIME\STTEST
  100.  
  101.   The test options
  102.           Composite Video  and
  103.           SVHS-Video
  104.   will always display an error message if no device is connected to
  105.   the Video In connector of the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS. This is not a
  106.   misfunction of the board.
  107.  
  108. 3.1 Installation under DOS
  109. ==========================
  110. Note:
  111.   You need the DOS installation only, if you have no Windows installed.
  112.   Before you start the installation you should know where (drive and
  113.   directory) your applications are installed for which you wish to
  114.   install driver software.
  115.  
  116.   Start the installation from
  117.   a) Disk with               b) MG-CD with
  118.      A:\                        <CD drive>:
  119.      SETUP                      SPEAINST
  120.  
  121.   After the installation it will normally be necessary to reconfigure
  122.   your applications for the new driver software. The steps necessary
  123.   to achieve this are described in the manuals.
  124.  
  125.  VESA MODES:
  126.  -----------
  127.  VESA modes are integrated in the graphics card BIOS.
  128.  
  129. 3.2 Installation under Windows
  130. ==============================
  131.   Start Windows at the VGA graphics mode.
  132.   Select the menu items 'File' and then 'Run' in the Windows Program
  133.   Manager. Then enter:
  134.  
  135.   a) (Disk)                  b) (MG-CD)
  136.      A:\SETUP                   <CD drive>:SPEAINST
  137.   Note:
  138.   The SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS allows the use of hardware accelerated video
  139.   functions only with a limitted number of resolutions and refresh
  140.   rates. To use this functionality, start V7SETUP from the SPEA group,
  141.   activate the 'Enable Video Hardware support' button and select the
  142.   desired resolution. Digital videos may be displayed after Windows
  143.   has been restarted. The SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS doesn't support Video
  144.   MPEG playback
  145.  
  146. 3.3 Installation under OS/2 Warp
  147. ================================
  148.   Please choose the OS/2 Warp driver for the ET4000/W32, /W32i, W32p
  149.   chip.
  150.  
  151.   ATTENTION:
  152.   ---------
  153.   If your SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS have a BIOS version 2.00 or higher, you have
  154.   after installing the Warp graphics driver to replace the file
  155.   \os2\dll\tliw32pm.dll. Therefor you can use the INSTALL.CMD at the
  156.   \SPEA\INSTALL\STPLUS\OS2 directory.
  157.  
  158.  Please note:
  159.  ------------
  160.   These drivers support the graphic functions of the SPEA SHOWTIME
  161.   PLUS under OS/2 WPS and WIN-OS/2, but do not support the hardware
  162.   accelarated video functions.
  163.   Under WinOS/2 the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS uses the hardware MPEG playback.
  164.   Because of the OS/2 CDROM drivers, you can't play VideoCDs.
  165.  
  166.  To install the video driver for Win-OS2:
  167.  - start win-OS2 with a trueclor or high color mode
  168.  - install the drivers (see 3.2.)
  169.  - After restarting your system, you can playback MPEG and AVI with Win OS/2.
  170.  
  171. 3.4 Installing the Windows NT 3.5 Driver
  172. ========================================
  173.   The driver for Windows NT 3.5 supports only higher resolutions for your
  174.   graphics display. It does not support video playback!
  175.  
  176.   This driver and a readme, you can find at the Media Gallery CD at
  177.   the directory: \SPEA\INSTALL\STPLUS\NT.
  178.  
  179. 3.5 Notes for Use with Windows 95
  180. =================================
  181.   The installation is the same as described in section 3.2 (Windows).
  182.   The differing requirements for the operating system are automatically
  183.   accounted by the installation program.
  184.  
  185.   Note:
  186.   If you have problems to play a VideoCD with Windows95, it should be
  187.   possible, that Windows has installed a driver, witch don't support this
  188.   feature. Please install a DOS real mode driver (config.sys) and the
  189.   \WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE file (autoexec.bat).
  190.   Now it should be possible too, that you have to disable the 32bit
  191.   access for drives.

  194. 3.6. SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS and UNIX operating systems
  195. ==================================================

  204.     (SCO, LINUX....) graphics and videocapture driver.
  205.     The playback of Video CD's und MPEG's is up to now not supported.
  206.     If it is available, this software will be available via this
  207.     company.
  208.  
  209. 3.7. Other drivers
  210. ==================
  211.   Drivers for the program 3D Studio 4 are a part of the program 3D Studio.
  212.   Please choose the chip: Tseng Labs ET4000/W32.
  213.   Driver for DOS AutoCAD version 10, 11, 12 are available at our
  214.   mailbox.
  215.  
  216.  
  217. 4. Programming Interfaces
  218. =========================
  219.  
  220. 4.1. The MCI Interface
  221. ======================
  222.    THE SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS supports the Microsoft standard MPEG playback
  223.    MCI instruction set. This set is documented in the file
  224.    SPEA\INSTALL\STPLUS\DOCUMCI\mcimpeg.doc.
  225.    A MCI capture driver is not yet available. Please use the VfW SDK for
  226.    this time.
  227.  
  228. 4.1. The OM1 Interface
  229. ======================
  230.   A preliminary version of this driver is available at the directory
  231.   SPEA\INSTALL\STPLUS\OM1. This interface is documented in the OM1
  232.   specification 1.00p. See the file OM1_100p.doc.
  233.   The Video In input is not supported with this interface.
  234.  
  235.  
  236. 5. MPEG PLAYBACK configuration
  237. ==============================
  238.  
  239. 5.1 windows configuration
  240. =========================
  241.     If you open the Windows mediaplayer (mplayer.exe) and you choose DEVICE
  242.   SPEA MPEG... and you choose a MPEG file, you can configure the SPEA MCI
  243.   driver (DEVICE CONFIGURATION):
  244.   - Normal Transfer: If you want to play a MPEG with more than 168kb/s and
  245.   you get green rectangles while playing this file, you should set the slider
  246.   2 steps to the right.
  247.   Don't use the other slider.
  248.  
  249. 5.2. DOS configuration
  250. ======================
  251.   At the file c:\spea\showtime\showtime.ini are 2 parameters possible:
  252.   IRQ=10            (only VL version)
  253.   NormalTransfer=6
  254.   This parameter sets the size (x1000kb) of the normal transfer buffer.
  255.   range: 6...15
  256.   standard: 6
  257.  
  258. 5.3. green rectangles while starting to play a MPEG
  259. ===================================================
  260.   Some OptiBase encoded files seem to cause green blocks in the video
  261.   during playback on the SHOWTIME PLUS. If when encoding these files
  262.   the OptiBase VideoCD encoding option is used this seems to correct
  263.   the problem.
  264.   An other way to remove this bug from your MPEG file
  265.   is the program SPEA\INSTALL\STPLUS\MPEGFIX\MPEGFIX.EXE.
  266.  
  267.  
  268.   On files with high data rates green blocks may also occur - increasing
  269.   the "normal transfer buffer" size in the configure menu may help (slide
  270.   bar to right).
  271.  
  272. 5.4.  MCI driver SPEAMCI.DRV
  273. ============================
  274.         version:1.21
  275.          fixed Bugs:
  276.         - no audio at the first Stream
  277.         - noises while opening the first MPEG Stream removed
  278.         - instead of freezing the last video frame, the window got black
  279.         - while using MCI_CLOSE, the window was closed too, if it was not
  280.           the right handle
  281.         - problems while opening the driver at fast PC's
  282.         - under win95, the driver was loading for several times
  283.  
  284.         Known problems
  285.         1. If DOS box full-screen is activated while MPEG active, some PCs
  286.         will hang.
  287.         2. Driver is not stable in Windows95 on some VL motherboards
  288.         In this case use MCISPEA.DRV version 1.18.
  289.         (rename the file CD:\spea\install\STPLUS\MCISPEA.118 to *.DRV
  290.         and copy it to the windows system directory)
  291.  
  292. 5.5.  MPEG output via SPEA Crunch It to TV
  293. ==========================================
  294.         With this driver (v 1.21) and the SPEA Crunch It it is possible to
  295.         display a MPEG to the Video out of the SPEA Crunch It (within
  296.         Windows 3.1 & Windows 95).
  297.  
  298.         Configuration:
  299.         Within the windows mediaplayer:
  300.                 - open a MPEG
  301.                 - choose Device
  302.                 - choose Configure
  303.  
  304.         Now you'll get the possibility to mark Chrunch It. If you
  305.         marked this parameter, the TV out via SPEA Crunch It is possible.
  306.         Notes:
  307.         - You can use this possibility only, when displaying the MPEG
  308.         (not the whole graphics) in interlaced mode, choosed in the same
  309.         configuration window.
  310.         - It isn't possible to display the whole PC screen contents to TV,
  311.         only the MPEG window.
  312.  
  313. 6.  Choosing a Monitor
  314. ======================
  315.   As already mentioned above, the graphic monitor used with the SPEA
  316.   SHOWTIME PLUS must comply to the specifications of this board. Only
  317.   then can the full functionality of the SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS be used.
  318.  
  319.  
  320.   During software installation you will asked for the maximum hori-
  321.   zontal frequency of your monitor. This entry is only of importance
  322.   if you use one the optional DOS drivers mentioned above (e.g the
  323.   AutoCAD driver). In this case, add the following entry to your
  324.   AUTOEXEC.BAT file :
  325.  
  326.                  CALL C:\SPEA\SHOWTIME\INIT.BAT STMODE
  327.   The selection of refresh rates under Windows is only done with the
  328.   utility program V7SETUP.
  329.  
  330.                                 *** IMPORTANT ***
  331.  
  332.    Please only select parameters that your monitor is specified for.
  333.    Your monitor may be seriously damaged, if it is constantly driven
  334.    with parameters which are not within the range of its specification.
  335.    If you change your monitor you have to compare the specification
  336.    and, if necessary, to change the resolutions / refresh rates using
  337.    STMODE!
  338.  
  339.  
  340. 8.  Known Restrictions
  341. ======================
  342.  
  343.   (1) It is generally not possible to use more than one active VGA
  344.   board simultaneously in a PC.
  345.   If your PC has a VGA adapter on the motherboard and you wish to use
  346.   the SHOWTIME PLUS, then you must deactivate the VGA adapter in the
  347.   PC first.
  348.  
  349.   (2) The SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS supports audio only for VideoCD and MPEG files,
  350.   but not the sound of *.avi or *.wav files.
  351.   In this case a sound board like the V7-media fx must be additionally
  352.   installed in your system.
  353.  
  354.   (3) If you use Windows for Workgroups and start it without network sup-
  355.   port ( 'WIN /N' ), then it may happen that Windows does not start
  356.   correctly when low display resolutions are used. This limitation
  357.   does not exist when Windows is started with 'WIN'.
  358.  
  359.  
  360. 6.  Corrections to the Manual
  361. =============================
  362.  
  363.   (1) With this software release it is possible to play CD-I's under DOS
  364.   and Windows with the following restrictions:
  365.   At the right edge 48 pixels will be cut. If there is a picture moving
  366.   from the right edge to the left, green arrays will appear. This areas
  367.   are to be seen up to the next I-frame. This effects are due to hardware
  368.   limitations.
  369.   With the SPEA Media Station you can NOT use any interactive parts of a
  370.   CD-I. You can only play the CD-I files.
  371.   CD's, with the Video CD or the CD-I/Video CD label you can still
  372.   play with the known quality.
  373.   Note:
  374.   Not all CD-drives, which are able to play VideoCD, can play CDi.
  375.  
  376.   (2)  We are offering the program SPEA Media Station for DOS too.
  377.   With this program "MSTATION.EXE" you can play Video CD's, CD-I
  378.   (for restrictions see above (1) ), MPEG files like  *.MPG, *.VPG and
  379.   the Autodesk flic-files  *.flc, *.fli. After the installation you will
  380.   find more information to this program at the file
  381.   \SPEA\SHOWTIME\MSTATION.DOC.
  382.  
  383.   (3) The option "HIGHSCAN" may not be used with the memory manager
  384.   EMM386.EXE.
  385.  
  386.   (4) Do not use SMARTDRIVE.EXE for the CD drive.
  387.  
  388.   (5) For the CD drive, use the driver MSCDEX.EXE v.2.23 or higher
  389.  
  390.   (6) A CD-ROM drive is obviously necessary in a real multi-media system.
  391.   As the VideoCD format is rather new compared to data format, your
  392.   CD drive may not be able to read data from a VideoCD. Updating the
  393.   driver software for your drive may help in this case.
  394.  
  395.   The following CD-ROM drives have been found to operate without
  396.   problems when the SHOWTIME PLUS had been tested in our Quality
  397.   Assurance department for win3.1x:
  398.  
  399.         Sony CDU-33a              Sony SLCD Device Driver Vers. 171a
  400.         Mitsumi FX 001D           CD-ROM Device Driver MTMCDAS Vers. 01.1b
  401.         Panasonic CR 562b/CR 563c CD-ROM Device Driver CDMKE Vers. 4.01
  402.         Matsushita CR-562-x       CD-ROM Device Driver CDMKE Vers. 4.01
  403.         Toshiba 3401              Future Domain CD-ROM Device Vers. 2.21/260
  404.  
  405.         (More drives will be tested)
  406.  
  407.   (7) About 550 KB conventional memory is required to successfully
  408.   read VideoCDs. Error messages like "CD ROM drive can not be read" or
  409.   others that describe a misfunction of the SPEA MCI drivers may be
  410.   displayed if not enough memory is available.
  411.   In this case, remove all drivers not essentially necessary for the
  412.   operation of your system from CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, then re-
  413.   start your system.
