  2. PIZZA TYCOON GENERAL HINTS
  3. --------------------------
  4.  
  5. 1.  After opening a restaurant you should create at least three 
  6.     standard recipes. If you don't, you won't give your customers 
  7.     much of a choice, so your restaurant will not become popular.
  8.  
  9. 2.  In the Suppliers book, you will see the amount of money you 
  10.     recently spent at each supplier, below the name of the 
  11.     supplier. This is the amount the supplier looks for when 
  12.     computing the default discount. If you stop buying at a 
  13.     supplier who gives you discount, the amount of discount will 
  14.     fall once per week.
  15.  
  16. 3.  If you keep stocks in your restaurant for a long time, the 
  17.     quality of the stocks will go down. If the quality of an 
  18.     ingredient drops below 5, the ingredient goes bad and is 
  19.     automatically thrown away. During summer, food goes bad much 
  20.     more quickly. Higher quality ingredients can be stored for 
  21.     a longer period of time than low quality stock.
  22.  
  23. 4.  If you have contracts, you can choose one of two delivery 
  24.     modes, displayed on page one of the contract at 'amount':
  25.      
  26.     'According to contract' means you'll get exactly the daily 
  27.     amounts you ordered, printed on page two of the contract.
  28.   
  29.     'As required' means you'll first get the amount you ordered 
  30.     on page two. But if you need more of certain ingredients 
  31.     mentioned in the contract, your stock will be filled up as 
  32.     needed. For the additional amount no discount is granted. 
  33.     Also the charge applies.
  34.  
  35.     Click on the contract to change the mode.
  36.    
  37. 5.  To pause the game use the standard Pause key on your 
  38.     keyboard. To restart the game, hit the Spacebar. 
  39.   
  40. 6.  If you have a manager, he or she will buy from the Suppliers 
  41.     you've used before. If you need an ingredient you have not 
  42.     bought before, the manager will buy from the cheapest 
  43.     Supplier stocking the ingredient. So make sure you show 
  44.     your managers where to shop.
  45.  
  46. 7.  If you allow your managers to change prices, it is not a 
  47.     good idea to interfere and alter these prices yourself. 
  48.     If you do, the manager will not know about it and will 
  49.     continue to base his/her decisions on the prices he/she set.
  50.  
  51. 8.  If you wish to buy weapons, it is best not to be too obvious 
  52.     about it !
  53.   
  54. 9.  After you have bought some chairs, you may find that your 
  55.     seating capacity does not match the number of chairs you 
  56.     have. If this occurs, check to see that all of your chairs 
  57.     are close enough to the tables. 
  58.     
  59.     People cannot eat at tables they cannot reach!
  60.  
  61. 10. The easiest way to move between restaurants is to go into 
  62.     any one of them and press the TAB key. Doing this will 
  63.     move you to the next restaurant in the chain. This can be 
  64.     done from any menu within the restaurant.
  65.  
  66. 11. Waking up regularly before 9 o'clock has the effect of 
  67.     reducing your health. 
  68.  
  69. 12. If you do have to get up before 9 o'clock, make sure 
  70.     you've set your clock first. The  clock will default to 
  71.     9 o'clock everyday.
  72.  
  73. 13. Yearly pizza competitions - unlike the other competitions, 
  74.     you have to make a pizza creation of your own. Make sure 
  75.     the pizza is one the judges will like.
  76.  
  77. 14. After achieving a certain status (i.e. Godfather) the 
  78.     status will be shown on your C.V. If however, your rating 
  79.     goes down for some reason (i.e. failing or refusing a 
  80.     mission) your C.V. will not show this - your C.V. shows 
  81.     only your greatest achievements. However, the drop in points 
  82.     will be shown on your status bar. You could thus be a level 
  83.     lower than you think you are. For example, your C.V. will
  84.     show the date when you became a Godfather, but your current 
  85.     status might be Mafia Big Wig.
  86.  
  87. 15. You cannot carry more than 255 pieces of any one kind of 
  88.     weapon (e.g. 255 bombs) at any one time; however, you may 
  89.     carry more than 255 weapons in total (e.g. 155 bombs and 
  90.     200 flame-throwers). You can store more than 255 pieces of 
  91.     one kind of weapon in your depot, but you will not be able 
  92.     to transfer more than 255 pieces from the depot to your bag. 
  93.     Nor can you buy any weapons from an arms dealer, if doing 
  94.     so would result in you carrying more than 255 weapons.

  96. 16. Dates - when presented numerically, dates follow the
  97.     European format. So 12 September, 1994 will be shown as 
  98.     12-9-94.
  99.  
  100. 17. If you buy stock from your Central Warehouse, your 
  101.     supplier will not sell you any stock if doing so will mean
  102.     that he has less than 499 items remaining for himself. You
  103.     may, however, buy more items if you order them directly 
  104.     from your restaurant.
  105.  
  106. 18. When you take part in the end-of-month pizza competition,
  107.     you first see your total earnings and your stake. While 
  108.     your competitors are making their pizzas, you will see 
  109.     their total earnings displayed. When the competition 
  110.     finishes you will see your total money plus or minus the
  111.     value of your stake depending on whether or not you won the 
  112.     competition.
  113.  
  114. 19. You can make any amount of money in Pizza Tycoon, but should 
  115.     you somehow get to earn above two billion dollars, you will 
  116.     see your cash total on every screen except your Balance Sheet 
  117.     which will stop counting at two billion. So if your Balance 
  118.     shows two billion when you know you have more, don't worry!
  119.                 
  120. 20. If you break into a restaurant owned by a human opponent, the 
  121.     other player may defend the restaurant by using his chef to
  122.     attack you. To control the chef, your opponent must use a 
  123.     joystick.

  126. SOLVING COMMON PROBLEMS:
  127. ------------------------
  128.  
  129. 1.  No customers come to my restaurant!
  130.     
  131.     * Make sure you create enough (at least three) recipes that 
  132.     have decent values on the popularity screen AND have 
  133.     non-negative trends (shown in the status window when looking 
  134.     at recipes).
  135.     
  136.     * You need some floor covering, tiles or carpet - just 
  137.     something people can properly walk on. If you leave your 
  138.     restaurant with no floor covering (the way the restaurant 
  139.     looks when you first see it) you'll get poor restaurant 
  140.     popularity values; check 'customer ratings' in the 
  141.     furnishing sub menu.
  142.  
  143.     * You may be addressing the wrong ages. Check customer 
  144.     statistics in the restaurant statistics sub menu, to see 
  145.     which customer groups are in this area; the yellow bar 
  146.     shows the potential customers for each group.
  147.  
  148.     * Take a look at your furniture and ask yourself what kind 
  149.     of people will feel comfortable here. Check 'customer 
  150.     ratings' in the furnishing sub menu.

  153. 2.  I keep getting the message, 'There aren't enough supplies 
  154.     to satisfy the demand,' but I'm sure I've bought enough.
  155.  
  156.     * You may have put a new recipe on your menu, causing a 
  157.     need for ingredients not yet bought.
  158.  
  159.     * Demand changes frequently. There may be a new trend 
  160.     causing greater demand for a certain ingredient. Check the 
  161.     demand value in your menu for each pizza selected and look 
  162.     at what each Pizza needs.
  163.  
  164.     * Supplies may be rotten, so would have been thrown in the 
  165.     garbage. So check on the quality of each ingredient.
  166.  
  167.  
  168. 3.  My manager is not going shopping properly, and I don't 
  169.     know why!
  170.  
  171.     * Make sure that in the manager menu you set the option 
  172.     'Supply shortage' to 'act yourself' AND the option 
  173.     'Shopping if needed' to 'yes'.
  174.  
  175.     * Take a look at the motivation of the manager. The value 
  176.     is equal to the probability in percent that he/she will go 
  177.     shopping each day. So if your manager has a motivation of 
  178.     only 75%, the probability for him/her to go shopping is 
  179.     only 3 in 4. Give the manager more money to increase 
  180.     motivation.
  181.  
  182.     * The manager may be sick, like anybody else. This will 
  183.     be shown in the manager menu.
  184.  
  185.     * If your manager is on a course, he/she obviously cannot 
  186.     go shopping. Again, this will be shown in the manager menu.
  187.  
  188.     * If the option 'staff shortage' is set to 'act yourself' 
  189.     and the manager has to assist either the cooks or the 
  190.     waiters at their work, the manager will have no time to go 
  191.     shopping that day.
  192.  
  193.     * On rare occasions, it may be that the Supplier you told 
  194.     the manager to use is temporarily out of stock. You can 
  195.     check this if you have a central warehouse in that city or 
  196.     if you try buying from the supplier yourself.

  218.     missions, you will be asked to do arms deals once you have 
  219.     achieved the rank of Gangster. Money Laundering will be 
  220.     assigned to those who have achieved the rank of Professional, 
  221.     and share deals to those who become Bosses.

  223. 3.  Zucchini - in both the manual and the game, Zucchini are
  224.     described by the European word, 'Courgettes'.

  227. AUTOEXEC.BAT
  228. ------------
  229.        
  230.     Make sure, if you are using a Soundblaster card that it is 
  231.     correctly set-up in your AUTOEXEC.BAT. This should at least 
  232.     contain the line SET BLASTER=A220 or whichever address is 
  233.     set for your sound card.
