  60. This version is primarily intended for users of Microsoft(R) Windows(R)
  61. 3.1/3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.1/3.11.

  63. Note that this version is a 16-bit program and therefore you do not need
  64. to have Win32s(R) installed on your computer.

  66. If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT(R), you can download 
  67. a version designed and optimized for these platforms at:

  70. Internet Explorer enables you to browse and view HTML documents on the network, 
  71. in addition to documents on the World Wide Web or Internet. Other services, 
  72. such as Gopher, FTP, and NNTP news support, are also available.

  105. INSTALLING MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER
  106. --------------------------------------

  108. Installing from the Internet
  109. ----------------------------
  110.  
  111. To install Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, carry out 
  112. the following procedure.
  113.  
  114. 1. Create a temporary directory on your computer.
  115. 2. Choose to download Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, 
  116.    and save the file Dlful30x.exe to the temporary directory.
  117. 3. In File Manager, run Dlful30x.exe to extract the program files.
  118. 4. Read the instructions below for LAN installations and for installing
  119.    with existing TCP/IP connections.
  120. 5. In File Manager, run Setup.exe. Setup installs files in the 
  121.    directory you specify.
  122.    
  123.    Note
  124.    * If you are upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer and
  125.    choose to install the program in a different directory from your
  126.    original version, please refer to the following section, "Upgrading 
  127.    over Version 2.01 or 2.1," for further instructions.
  128.  
  129. 6. If you want, you can delete the temporary directory you created.
  130. 7. Run Internet Explorer.
  131.  
  132.  
  133. Upgrading over Version 2.01 or 2.1
  134. ------------------------------------
  135.  
  136. When upgrading to a newer version Internet Explorer, you can choose to
  137. install the program into the same directory as your previous version 
  138. or establish another directory. If you choose the latter, your previous 
  139. dialer settings and connection(s) will be preserved. However, if you choose
  140. the former, you must do the following in order to use your pre-existing 
  141. dialer settings and connection(s):
  142.  
  143.   1. If you install to a new directory, but keep your existing 
  144.      program group, you must change the properties of any dialer 
  145.      program item(s) you previously created so that the Command Line 
  146.      and Working Directory settings point to the appropriate directories. 
  147.      (Note that the New Connections program item does not need to be 
  148.      modified.) You do this by clicking the dialer program item, choosing 
  149.      Properties from the File menu, and replacing all references to the 
  150.      existing directory with the name of new directory. For example, if 
  151.      you install an upgrade of Internet Explorer to a new directory named
  152.      NEWEXPL, the following change would be required:
  153.  
  154.     Command Line: C:\IEXPLORE\iedial.exe C:\IEXPLORE\CON0000.CON
  155.     Working Directory: C:\IEXPLORE
  156.  
  157.     Changes to:
  158.  
  159.     Command Line: C:\NEWEXPL\iedial.exe C:\NEWEXPL\CON0000.CON
  160.     Working Directory: C:\NEWEXPL
  161.  
  162.   2. Using File Manager, copy all files with the extension .con
  163.      from the previous directory to the new created directory.
  164.  
  165.   3. If during the upgrade you choose to use a new program group, just 
  166.      follow step 2 and copy the old dialer program items to the new 
  167.      program group. Repeat step 1 to change the Command Line and Working
  168.      Directory settings.
  169.  
  170.  
  171. Upgrading over Version 1.5 or Version 1.6 Beta
  172. -----------------------------------------------
  173. If you are upgrading from the version 1.5 or version 1.6 beta, please 
  174. read the following special notes.
  175.  
  176. - The format of Iexplore.ini has changed, so Setup will make a backup
  177.   copy of your current Iexplore.ini file to a file called Ie16ini.sav.
  178. - You will need to reapply any user-selectable settings, such as proxy 
  179.   servers, in the new version.
  180. - Your Favorites and History lists will be preserved.
  181. - Win32s is not required for this version, so if you installed Win32s 
  182.   specifically to run the version 1.6 beta, then you can remove it from
  183.   your system. Please refer to the following URL for instructions on 
  184.   removing Win32s from your system:

  188. LAN Installations
  189. -----------------
  190.  
  191. If you already have access to the Internet through your LAN, you will be 
  192. able to use Internet Explorer to browse the Internet. (If you are not 
  193. sure whether you currently have access, consult your network 
  194. administrator.)
  195.  
  196. If you have access, your LAN administrator should provide you with 
  197. the address of proxy servers that can be used.
  198.  
  199. To install Internet Explorer, you need to do the following:
  200.  
  201. - Make sure you have the TCP/IP protocol installed.
  202. - Run the installation in Custom mode, and make sure that the 
  203.   check box labaled TCP/IP Stack And Dialer is not selected.
  204.  
  205. Proxy servers can also be used, provided they are CERN compliant.
  206. To enable use of a proxy server, choose Options from the View menu,
  207. and then on the Proxy tab, type the address of your proxy server.
  208.  
  209.  
  210. Before Using the Mail Client   
  211. ----------------------------
  212.  
  213. This software includes the first release of Internet Mail for Windows 3.1.
  214. Internet Mail enables you to send and receive electronic mail using the
  215. Internet. In order to use Internet Mail, you need to have an e-mail
  216. account.
  217.  
  218. If you did not use the Internet Connection Wizard to setup Internet Mail,
  219. you need to configure Internet Mail before using it. If it has not
  220. been configured, Internet Mail will ask you to enter the following
  221. information:
  222.   - The names of the network servers that you use to send and
  223.     receive your mail (the name of your POP3 and SMTP servers)
  224.   - Your login name and password on the server from which you retrieve
  225.     e-mail
  226.   - Your e-mail address
  227. If you are not ready to enter this information, contact your system
  228. administrator or your Internet service provider for assistance.
  229.

  231. Using Third-Party Mail Clients
  232. ------------------------------
  233.  
  234. To use a MAPI-compliant third-party mail client with Internet 
  235. Explorer, you need to edit the Internet Explorer .ini file. To do this:
  236.  
  237. - Use Notepad to open the file IExplore.ini in your Windows 
  238.   directory.
  239. - Find the Mail section. (You can search for the text [Mail].)
  240. - Change the MyMailClient setting to 0.
  241.  
  242. When you're finished, the Mail section should look like this:
  243.     
  244.     [Mail]
  245.     ; Set MyMailClient to 0 to use third party MAPI mail clients
  246.     MyMailClient=0
  247.  
  248. Please note that Eudora is not MAPI-compliant, and cannot be 
  249. started by Internet Explorer.

  251.  
  252. Installing a Modem 
  253. ------------------
  254.  
  255. Before setting up, please make sure that your modem is turned on
  256. and properly connected. Setup will try to detect and configure your 
  257. modem. If a modem is detected, but the exact type is unknown, select 
  258. the modem manually from the list of supported modems.
  259.  
  260. If a modem is not detected or you select the check box labeled Don't 
  261. Detect My Modem, you can select the modem manually.  However, the 
  262. default maximum speed will be 9600 baud. Therefore, you should manually 
  263. select a speed that matches your modem's capabilities in order to 
  264. optimize the performance of the modem.

  267. Using the Dialer
  268. ----------------
  269.  
  270. This release of Internet Explorer also supports dialer scripts. 
  271. IEscript.exe is located in the directory where you installed Internet 
  272. Explorer. The program enables you to associate a script with a connection. 
  273. To start the program, choose Run from the File menu in Program Manager.
  274.  
  275. In order to use the dialer with a PBX that does not have a dial tone, you 
  276. need to modify the DialString in the "Dial-In Configuration" section of the
  277. Shivappp.ini file in order to dial. For example, the X3 command would be 
  278. inserted between the "AT" and "D" entries as follows:
  279.  
  280. [Dial-In Configuration]
  281. DialString=ATX3D
  282.  
  283. Note that adding the X3 command affects all locations and only 
  284. functions properly with Hayes-compatible modems.
  285.  
  286. To access an outside line, you may need to add a pause character 
  287. (either a "W" or a comma) after the outside access number, so that 
  288. there is a pause before the outside number is dialed. To specify 
  289. this setting, click the My Locations Tab. In the To Access An 
  290. Outside Line, First Dial box, type the outside line access number 
  291. followed by a "W" or a comma. For example, if the number required 
  292. to access an outside line is "9," you would type the following in 
  293. the box:

  302. Using Third-Party Telnet Helper Applications
  303. ----------------------------------------------
  304.  
  305. To configure Internet Explorer to use a Telnet helper application,
  306. open Iexplore.ini and locate the [Helpers] section. Remove the 
  307. semicolon (;) from in front of the telnet= line, and type the path to 
  308. the telnet application. For example:
  309.

  311. telnet=c:\windows\telnet.exe %s
  312.

  314. Installation with Existing TCP/IP Connections and ISP Accounts    
  315. --------------------------------------------------------------
  316.  
  317. Internet Explorer has been installed and tested with several of the 
  318. most popular Internet access products available today. If it is 
  319. configured properly, you should be able to use the TCP/IP protocol and 
  320. dialer (via Winsock.dll) provided with these products to connect with 
  321. your Internet service provider (ISP). It is not necessary to install 
  322. the Dialer and TCP/IP stack that are provided with Internet Explorer.
  323.  
  324. In general, all that is required is that you configure the PATH command 
  325. in your Autoexec.bat file so that Internet Explorer can find the Winsock.dll 
  326. file you are using to connect to the Internet. For example, if your
  327. Winsock.dll file is in the directory C:\Connect, add a line directly under
  328. your current PATH command that reads: 
  329.   PATH=%PATH%;C:\CONNECT
  330.  
  331. If you have multiple Winsock.dll files, please make sure that the Winsock
  332. file you choose to use comes first in the PATH command or is located
  333. in the directory where your browser files reside.
  334.  
  335. Following are procedures for installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 
  336. over some common Internet access products. Other packages available 
  337. include FTP Software, Network TeleSystems, and shareware from Trumpet 
  338. Software (http://www.trumpet.com.au/wsk/winsock.htm).
  339.  
  340.  
  341.    Internet Chameleon 4.5
  342.    ----------------------
  343.  
  344. 1. Install Internet Explorer to the suggested default directory
  345.    (C:\Iexplore).
  346. 2. Make sure that the Internet Chameleon directory is in your path. 
  347.    If it is not, add it to the PATH statement in your Autoexec.bat 
  348.    file, and then restart your computer.
  349. 3. Run the Internet Chameleon dialer program (from the Custom icon).
  350. 4. Select the line corresponding to your current Internet service 
  351.    provider, and make sure that the Dial On Demand command on the 
  352.    Setup menu has a check mark by it. This makes the dialer 
  353.    program run when Internet Explorer tries to connect to the Internet.
  354. 5. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon 
  355.    in the Microsoft Internet Explorer group in Program Manager.
  356.  
  357. If you have configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, an 
  358. Internet connection is made when you first enter an Internet 
  359. address in Internet Explorer.
  360.  
  361. If you have not configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, 
  362. you need to start that program before you start Internet Explorer.
  363.  
  364.  
  365.    Netscape Navigator 1.2 Personal Edition
  366.    ---------------------------------------
  367.  
  368. 1. Install Internet Explorer to the directory that contains your 
  369.    Netscape Navigator files. For example, if you installed the 
  370.    Netscape browser in the default directory (C:\Netscape), place 
  371.    the Internet Explorer files in the same location.
  372. 2. Run Internet Explorer.
  373.  
  374.  
  375.    Other Internet Dialer Packages
  376.    ------------------------------
  377.  
  378. 1. Using the Custom setup option, install Internet Explorer to the 
  379.    suggested default directory without the TCP/IP stack and dialer.
  380. 2. Make sure that the Internet dialer directory is in your path. 
  381.    If it is not, add it to the PATH statement in your Autoexec.bat 
  382.    file, and then restart your computer.
  383. 3. Run your existing Internet dialer program.
  384. 4. Choose to enable dial on demand (if your dialer supports this option). 
  385.    This makes the dialer program run when Internet Explorer tries to
  386.    connect to the Internet.
  387. 5. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon 
  388.    in the Microsoft Internet Explorer group in Program Manager.
  389.  
  390. If you have configured the dialer to dial on demand, an Internet
  391. connection is made when you first enter an Internet address in
  392. Internet Explorer.
  393.  
  394. If you have not configured the dialer to dial on demand, you need to start 
  395. that program before you start Internet Explorer.
  396.  
  397.  
  398. Making a Backup Copy of the Software    
  399. ------------------------------------
  400.  
  401. 1. Make sure that you have three floppy disks (3.5" disks with 1.44 
  402.    MB capacity).
  403. 2. After you have downloaded the software and have run Dlful30x.exe (see 
  404.    "Installing from the Internet" section earlier in this file) your 
  405.    temporary directory contains all the files that you need to make disks.
  406. 3. Copy the file Iew31_3.cab on your disk number 3.
  407. 4. Copy the file Iew31_2.cab on your disk number 2.
  408. 5. Copy the following files on your disk number 1.
  409.     Files.inf
  410.     Readme.txt
  411.     Iew31_1.cab
  412.     Setup.exe
  413.     Install.lst
  414.     License.txt
  415.     Install.bin
  416.

  418. ---------------------
  419. KNOWN ISSUES AND BUGS
  420. ---------------------
  421.  
  422. * No inline video.
  423. * No Internet shortcuts.
  424. * Does not work with Windows NT Challenge Response Authentication in
  425.   Microsoft Internet Information Server. To work around this, make sure
  426.   the Allow Anonymous option is enabled in the WWW Service Properties dialog 
  427.   box in Internet Information Server.
  428. * You cannot open another instance of Internet Explorer by double-clicking
  429.   an .htm file in File Manager or double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon
  430.   in Program Manager. To open a new instance of Internet Explorer, choose
  431.   New Window from the File menu.
  432. * If you have voice messages waiting on your phone line (rapid beeps), our 
  433.   Dialer fails to dial out on the line. This can be remedied (for Hayes-
  434.   compatible modems only) if, in the file Modems2.ini, at the end of the line
  435.   for the InitString setting, you set "blind dialing" by typing:
  436.     S6=5
  437. * When checking for or sending mail with the Internet Mail program, you 
  438.   need to wait a few minutes before closing the Mail program to make sure 
  439.   it has completed the transfer.  
  440. * Internet Explorer might have difficulty loading a very large number of
  441.   newsgroups (>16000). If your news server has a large number of newsgroups,
  442.   you should use a dedicated newsreader to browse the groups.
  443. * If you are creating a new connection and try to cancel that connection 
  444.   part of the way through the creation process, the file that represents 
  445.   the new connection is still created. If you try to use that connection 
  446.   name again, the following message appears:
  447.  
  448.     The entry name is invalid. It is already in use.
  449.  
  450.   If you want to use that specific connection name, you need to find the 
  451.   .con file that was created for that connection and delete it from your 
  452.   hard disk.
  453. * After upgrading to version 3.0, if you run an earlier version, you may get
  454.   an error dialog stating 'Could not :Load Entry Point in Security Protocol
  455.   Module: Proxy_Basic=Proxy_basic_Load,basic.dll'.  This is a harmless warning.
  456.   Click OK and continue or copy the 'Basic.dll' from the 3.0 instalation over
  457.   the 'Basic.dll' of the previous installation.
  458. * You may experience problems running some Plug-ins.  We are working with
  459.   several vendors on these issues.
