$VER: FAQ.dok 1.0 (09-10-95)
(c) Meeting Pearls Group
Autor: Khamsonh Marcel 'ninji' Khounlivong
Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers)
Frequently asked questions
are used to prevent newsgroups, IRC and mailing lists
from low level questions andto reduce traffic. Reading FAQ could help beginners
finding an answer to a general problem. So the texts of FAQ became a database of
knowledge.
Because of difficult space problems on this CD only the FAQ from
comp.answers
,
soc.answers
and
sci.answers
(size about 34 MB) are included. The FAQ from
rec.answers (special topics: animals, cars, sports) maybe you'll find on next
CD.
Reasons
Private access to Internet makes it possible to get more informations from
different databases, for instance scientific publications. To prevent wild
traffic and reduce paying more cash than necessary for using your modem, you
should doubth about using local stuff. That's why this FAQ were included on CD
;-). Deadline was 07th october 1995, 9 a.am., GET+1:00.
Organisation
The documents stored in FAQ/ are sorted on this CD by their posting into special
newsgroups. So, it could be possible you'll find a FAQ both in one and in
another newsgroup.
I'm still not a friend of unsorted long directory lists. More than 150 entries
in one drawer are too much! That's why the FAQ were renamed using the keyword
Archive-name:
and moved into subdirectories. The date of these files are simular
to posting date into newsgroups.
Because of after this there were still a lot of files and dirs, don't try to
open icon from Workbench having less than 1MB chip memory! To search for a
special file use FAQ-full.list
Reading texts
To read FAQ from guide or Mosaic, you have to prepare tooltype GUIDE or HTML for
the special Meeting Pearls
MetaTool
utility, i.e. the correct absolut path entry
in
ENV:METACONFIG
and a working entry in the preferences file for GUIDE or HTML.
Certainly you also can read documents from Shell or Workbench, but don't forget
the numbers of files and dirs there.
Hints
We try to be actual with our FAQ collection. But it is also possible, because of
seldom changing some articles are the same like published before. To get a
status of the document look for
Last-modified:
or extract the file date.
To support a search for a special question, most FAQ follows a standard in
numbering. For instance type '*** 1.4' for getting paragraph number 1.4.
Bugs and Errors
It takes me a lot of time and was really difficult to download, sort and
classificate these FAQ. An example: every day I have to transport up to 1.2
MByte and have to start a procedure over six ours to select, delete double and
create hypertexts (using a A500 without turbo boards ;-). So maybe there could
be some mistakes. Sorry about this!
If you are using (A)Rexx (you don't know that the origin of Rexx cames from PC,
do you ?), you'll find my scripts in
bonus/
. Information only, the don't work on
this CD :-).
