  6. JIV is a picture viewer. I can imagine that you're wondering
  7. now why I had to write yet another one... well, here's a list
  8. of features that should answer your question:
  9.  
  10.  · JIV supports many different file formats:
  11.  
  12.    - GIF (full GIF87a standard plus a subset of GIF89a).
  13.  
  14.    - BMP (MS-Windows and OS/2 variants, currently only
  15.      uncompressed).
  16.  
  17.    - IFF-ILBM (including HAM6, HAM8, EHB and 24bit formats).
  18.  
  19.    - PNM pictures (PBM, PGM and PPM in both binary and
  20.      ASCII format).
  21.  
  22.    - PCX (8bit/VGA, 24 bit, monochrome and _some_ 4 bit)
  23.  
  24.    - JPEG/JFIF, if the JPEG CODEC is installed.
  25.  
  26.  · JIV supports several types of display hardware:
  27.  
  28.    - all native graphics chipsets (OCS, ECS and AGA).
  29.  
  30.    - Cybergraphics emulation.
  31.  
  32.    - A2024.
  33.  
  34.    - Picasso-II/Village emulation.
  35.  
  36.    - Generic mode, should work with every graphics board that
  37.      emulates Workbench/Intuition. Tested with the Picasso-II
  38.      emulation and the Cybergraphics emulation.

  40.  · JIV supports displaying over-sized images using autoscroll.
  41.  
  42.  · JIV supports multiple filenames and AmigaDOS pattern
  43.    matching.
  44.  
  45.  · JIV can dither pictures that use more colors than your
  46.    display hardware supports.
  47.  
  48.  · JIV offers an endless/slideshow mode that can be used for
  49.    (non-interactive) advertising, for example in a shop window.

  51. Please note that JIV is probably not the best choice for
  52. "small" Amiga configurations. It will need a lot of memory and
  53. (in some cases) quite a bit of computing power as well.

  55. The minimum configuration for JIV is:
  56.  
  57.  · 68000 or better.
  58.  
  59.  · AmigaOS 2.04 (V37) or better.
  60.  
  61.  · 1 MByte or more of RAM.
  62.  
  63. This configuration should allow you to view small to medium-sized
  64. pictures (640x480x8 should just be possible).
  65.  
  66. The suggested configuration for JIV is:
  67.  
  68.  · 68030 or better.
  69.  
  70.  · AmigaOS 3.1 (V40) or better.
  71.  
  72.  · 4 MBytes of RAM or more.
  73.  
  74.  · Hard disk drive.
  75.  
  76. This configuration will allow you to view most pictures you're
  77. likely to find. A bit more RAM wouldn't hurt, though. :-) And
  78. of course you'll need a graphics board if you want to display
  79. true-color pictures without dithering.

  83. Distribution License
  84.  
  85. This version of JIV may be distributed freely for
  86. non-commercial purposes only. You must distribute the entire
  87. archive INTACT and UNCHANGED, that is, you are NOT allowed
  88. to add files to the archive or remove files from the archive
  89. or change files in the archive.

  91. Specifically, you're allowed to:
  92.  
  93.  · Distribute JIV on floppy-disk-based collections of
  94.    PD software.
  95.  
  96.  · Distribute JIV on CDROM-based collections of PD software IN
  97.    ARCHIVED FORM ONLY, unless you obtain a specific license
  98.    from the author.
  99.  
  100.  · Distribute JIV electronically, for example through email or
  101.    FTP, or through BBS systems.
  102.  
  103.    BBS sysops, do NOT add those pesky BBS advertisments to the
  104.    archive!

  106. Specifically, you're NOT allowed to:
  107.  
  108.  · Distribute parts of the archive or changed/patched versions
  109.    of the files in this archive.
  110.  
  111.  · Distribute JIV on CDROM in ready-to-run form, unless you
  112.    obtain a specific license from the author first.
  113.  
  114.  · Distribute JIV in any form on CDROMs that contain
  115.    picture collections, unless you obtain a specific license
  116.    from the author first.¹

  118.  · Distribute JIV bundled together with a commercial product
  119.    (software, hardware or other), unless you obtain a specific
  120.    license from the author first.

  122. I have been informed that in the U.S. a patent has been
  123. granted for the LZW compression algorithm used in the GIF
  124. file format, and that the patent holder requires a license
  125. fee for use of this algorithm in commercial software
  126. (including shareware). Therefore I will not ask for any
  127. shareware fees from U.S. users of JIV.

  130. Please do not confuse this distribution license, which details
  131. the terms and conditions for DISTRIBUTING JIV, with the
  132. shareware license which details the terms and conditions for
  133. USING JIV.

  135. ¹ Permission is granted to include ARCHIVED versions of JIV on
  136.   the following CDROMs even if these CDROMs contain picture
  137.   collections:

  141.   · Saar/AMOK

  143.   Angela Schmidt has my permission to install JIV in both
  144.   archived and ready-to-run form on the Meeting-Pearls-II
  145.   CDROM.

  164. Known problems:
  165.  
  166.  · If you're using an A4000/040 kickstart file on a computer
  167.    with a CPU <= 68020, the DISPLAY=GENERIC may crash your
  168.    machine. This is not a bug in JIV. The BestModeIDA() system
  169.    call in the A4000 kickfile seems to contain an instruction
  170.    that is only available on 68030 and above.

  172.    There are only two kinds of people who use A4000 kickstart
  173.    files on CPUs below 68030: former registered developers
  174.    and software pirates.
