  2. This document applies to installation procedures for any "U4" shareware
  3. program.

  5. For specific information on operating ChessU4.EXE, see helpfile
  6. ReadMeU4.txt.

  11. Note: If using File Manager, make sure the current directory is set to that
  12.       of the executing .EXE.
  13.  
  14. Installation and Registration
  15. =============================
  16. Beginning with the "family" of U4 uploads posted on or after December 12,
  17. 1995 there is a difference in installation procedure. Prior to this date
  18. all programs were independent--but now one program will recognize another.
  19.  
  20. New downloads are for evaluation purposes only and will typically expire
  21. in 60 days. Please register (see below) whenever you intend to keep a
  22. program.
  23.  
  24. It is important that a first installation be carried out correctly and it
  25. is recommended that a new directory be created for all new U4 downloads as
  26. the installation procedure for the first program will "object" if it finds
  27. old or un-validated copies of other U4 programs already on the system.
  28. Once the first program is installed things become less critical--but
  29. remember to always replace any old keyfile (U4Key.txt) with the new
  30. keyfile that came with the (next) program downloaded and installed.

  32. Likewise, after unzipping, programs should be "moved," not copied.

  34. Typical first-installation procedures to avoid problems:

  36.     NORMAL.ZIP downloaded from Net
  37.  
  38.         > move normal.zip c:\cleandir\normal.zip
  39.         > cd\cleandir
  40.         > pkunzip normal.zip
  41.  
  42.         *OR*
  43.  
  44.     NORMAL.ZIP unzipped in any directory, then, from the directory...
  45.  
  46.         > move normal.exe c:\cleandir\normal.exe
  47.         > move u4key.txt  c:\cleandir\u4key.txt

  49. Using an entirely empty directory is not necessary if there are no other
  50. U4 programs already on the directory. Also, once the first U4 program has
  51. been installed, other U4 installations can follow. Just remember to "move"
  52. (if necessary) -- not "copy" -- and use the latest keyfile.
