FAQ for DeeP and DeePBSP
───────────────────────
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ DeeP and DeePBSP for DOOM+HERETIC+HEXEN+STRIFE │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
This document lists the most common questions and answer for new DeeP
users. Please refer to DEEP101.DOC a list of features in DeeP.
┌───────────────┐
│ What is DeeP │
└───────────────┘
DeeP got its start from the basic ideas in DEU 5.21. DeeP is written in
Borland 32bit C++ 4.52 DPMI. It contains over 9 times the code of
DEU5.21, resulting in a brand new "extended" program now with many new
features.
DeeP has Power, Speed and Ease of use. A long list of features you Dream
of, from Texture drawing, Map printing, Cut, Copy, Undo, and Paste (even
between different levels) to powerful -interactive- WYSIWYG drawing tools.
It supports both keyboard and mouse users with equal ease. Ex-DEU users
can use most of the key commands they already know, making DeeP easy to
learn.
With its unmatched set of options, awesome graphics speed (much faster
than Windows) and DeePBSP (the *only* fastest nodes builder on the planet,
plain and simple, just benchmark it), great levels can be created in less
than 1/4 the normal time using other editors.
Extensive error checking keeps you out of trouble!
DeeP is written by professionals, (who happen to also love building
levels<g>) to give you:
- Quality where it counts, the way it should be!
- Exclusive Awesome Direct Drawing lets you make your custom graphics.
- Fully supports all external PWAD graphics (sprites,textures,flats,etc.).
- Flicker free fast graphics, minimum screen redraws required.
- Edits ALL the games in 1 program with instant dynamic game switching.
- Automatic level detection, no user setup required.
- Ultra simple, incredibly fast script editing and saving.
- Precision ONE-step linedef/sector drawing from any mode, no guesswork.
- Create the shape you want directly with no extra steps.
- WYSIWYG tool drawing creates stairs-to-teleports where you want them.
- Accurate Gamma correction for easy viewing of those -dark- textures!
- Unmatched reliability and ease of use.
- Scroll bars, buttons and dialog boxes for fast & easy interaction.
- Uniquely configurable, from display colors to error checking options.
- Fully documented, featuring indexed online Help and search (use F1).

│ Common questions │
└───────────────────────────────────────────┘
Installation Questions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. Where is the .INI file.
A. There isn't one! DeeP is completely self-installing.
Q. "Graphics hardware not detected" error message appears.
A. The Video driver you selected at installation is not compatible with
your video board. You must have at least 512KB of video memory.
If you selected VESA, your video BIOS is not compatible with the VESA
standard. Unzip the UVBE50BD.ZIP file. A newer 5.1 version is available.
Call us to download it or look for it as UNIVBE51.ZIP. It's fairly
large, so the new version is not included.
Some ATI boards require this driver.
This message also appears if you try to run at a resolution other than
640x480. For example, 1280x1024 requires 2MB of video memory.
If you selected a driver that is not appropriate for your board, try
a new driver using the " -driver new" option to reselect the driver.
Grid Questions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. I press G but the grid does not appear.
A. Press H, this make the grid appear and disappear.
Q. I don't like dashed lines for the grid.
A. Click Edit on the top menu bar and select "Load Options/Etc".
Click the box for "Grid Dashed" and make it white (not active).
Q. I don't like the grid color.
A. Click Edit on the top menu bar and select "Mouse/LineColor".
Select the Grid entry, press enter and change the color for the grid.
Q. My stuff always moves all over, but I don't have the grid on.
A. Snap-to-Grid is on by default. Click the button on the top menu
bar with the small "s" or press the "/" key. Unlike DEU, this is
a separate choice from G.
Q. The grid is changing sizes back and forth when I Zoom.
A. If the grid display gets too small to view (about 4 pixels), DeeP
adjusts the grid to the next size. The color also changes to DarkGray
to indicate the shift. A size below this is not usable (well on a 20"
it would be).
Mouse Questions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. I changed computers and the mouse click no longer works.
A. Select F5 options menu, selected Mouse Options and set the
Mouse Timer to 0. This recalibrates your new CPU.
Q. The mouse click speed is too slow.
A. Click Edit and select "Zoom/Mouse/Map Options". Reduce the click
speed to 150ms. Now you have to click very fast to get double
clicking to work. If you go below 150ms, it is difficult to click.
Q. The mouse double click speed is too fast.
A. Select "Zoom.." as above and increase the click speed. Try around
350ms. Now the time from single clicking to selecting is also
increased since DeeP is giving you more time to double click
before deciding that you meant just a single click!
Q. The mouse moves too fast across the screen.
A. Click on Edit and select "Zoom/Mouse/Map Options".
Change the mouse speed to a lower number (50 is a good start).
Q. The mouse moves too slow across the screen.
A. Click on Edit and select "Zoom/Mouse/Map Options".
Change the mouse speed to a higher number.
Q. I don't like the mouse following my menus.
A. Click on Edit and select "Zoom/Mouse/Map Options".
Change the "Snap Cursor" to off.
Q. The mouse is jerky across the screen.
A. For a 486/33SX and below, some delay may occur when displaying textures.
If you are running disk compression, it's possible to encounter delays
while your system is decompressing data.
There are also some non MicroSoft mouse drivers that cause this problem.
We have seen this problem primarily on older versions of DOS (earlier
then 6.2x) or if you are running in a DOS environment under OS/2 or
Windows and you some task is taking cpu cycles away.
Upgrade your DOS, you'll be glad you did, and get the latest drivers or
get rid of disk compression, buy a faster processor or ??.
Video Questions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. The screen colors are strange.
A. If you used the HERETIC IWAD on a DOOM project, the DOOM IWAD on a
HERETIC project or HEXEN for DOOM etc. the colors will look VERY
strange! Either change the IWAD name the match the type of project or
delete DEEP.CHK and start over with a fresh set of Project control
files.
Q. My map flies off the screen before I have a chance to stop.
A. Turn on the screen delay feature with the "[" and "]" keys. This will
slow it down to any speed you like.
-or-
Select the Alt+F5 option screen and select Mouse Edge. You click the
a mouse button when the cursor touches the edge of the screen.
-or-
Press Scroll Lock. The map is "locked" until you release Scroll Lock.
-or-
You can also scroll the map by pressing Ctrl+Right mouse button (the
Ctrl key can be released after you start) or by quickly pressing the
Left mouse button and then press the right button. The cursor changes
to a circle with a cross. Only one button has to held down while you
scroll.
-or-
Change the scroll speed in F5 map options.
Q. The video is too slow.
A. Turn of the display of textures on the bottom of the screen. Press
the "I" key. There are 3 modes of display, All, Some and NONE.
Shift+I toggles from all to none.
Color Questions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. I don't like the grid color.
A. Click Edit and select "Mouse/LineColors". Change the grid color to
something else. If you don't see any color you like, select
"Palette Colors" and change "Anycolor2" to something you like. Go
back to "Mouse/LineColors" and select the bottom entry, that's the
one you made!
Q. I don't like the background color when I display all the things as
pictures.
A. Click on Edit and select "Mouse/LineColors" and change "Background
Things".
Q. I don't like the menu color.
A. You can change most of the colors as described above.
Reading A file Questions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. When I start DeeP, the last levels saved are always loaded.
A. If you do not want to always start with the last levels you saved,
click on Edit and select "Load Options/Etc" and turn off
"AutoLoad". You can also select File and "Read" a new PWAD or
select "New" level.
To clear ALL the levels loaded, select "Reset Level". You can also
clear at startup, by typing "DeeP -n" or forcing DeeP to read a
new file "DeeP -file newfile.wad". The choice is yours.
Q. The program kicks me out and says "file limit of ### exceeded".
A. This is a normally a Shareware version message limit. Reset your
levels as described above to stay within the limits of the version.
The registered version is limited to 56 files.
Q. How can I read a file in a different directory than where DeeP is?
A. Set the Patch PATH in the menu using alt+F5 . This sets the default
directory. You can also temporarily read it from anywhere by
entering the complete path, including the drive, for example,
"C:\MYWADS\FAVORITE.WAD".
Saving A file Questions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. When I save my level, it comes back and says "mywad.wad" not found.
A. Your system is not configured correctly to run DeeP.
Follow the suggestions in README.DOC.
Q. DeePBSP gives me a "Domain Error".
A. You probably have a duplicate vertex. Be sure to run all the checks.
Select "Checks" and then click the option that selects running all
the map checks.
Q. How can I save my file in a different directory than where DeeP is?
A. Set the PATH using the alt+F5 option menu. This sets the default
directory. You can also temporarily save it anywhere by entering
the complete path, including the drive, for example,
"C:\MYWADS\FAVORITE.WAD".
Misc Questions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. I like using the keyboard, DEU let's me do that.
A. Go ahead. Almost ALL the DEU keys work.
"< > , ." are changed and put to good use for scaling and rotating.
Q. I like to draw lines like some of the other editors.
A. Press ctrl+D in ANY mode (or quick double right click and select
drawing mode) and then press Ins or left double click.
Now start drawing!
Q. I like to draw boxes like some of the other editors.
A. Press F9 and select the object to draw (or quick double right click
and select rectangle or polygon) and select the type of "box" to draw.
You can size and move the "box" before it is plopped!
Q. When I move the cursor, nothing gets selected anymore. It used to
work, what happened?
A. You accidently pressed "shift+A". Press it again to make it better.
This is the auto-select option. Sometimes you don't want the object
selected to change when you move the cursor. When this is on, you
can manually click on top of each object to select it. (Holding
the shift key down when you move does the same thing temporarily.)
Q. The program kicks me out and says "DeeP code: out of memory allocating
xxxx bytes".
A. If you allocate too much memory to SMARTDRV, it's possible to run out
of memory. Reduce the SMARTDRV cache so that a least 4MB is available
for DeeP (512kb is recommended).
If you have less than 4MB free when DeeP is running, do NOT cache
the textures.
QEMM also will take all your memory! You need to get the memory back
from QEMM.
We have noticed a problem caused by a Windows peculiarity in memory
allocation. The memory is there, but another resource is used up, so
you can't get it! Close all Windows tasks before you start DeeP.
It is not recommended to run DeeP in Windows because of this problem.
Q. The program sometimes runs really slow.
A. If you are using virtual memory (DMPISWAP) and you run out of real
memory, DeeP swaps your data to disk. This is *very* slow. If this
happens a lot, either turn of texture caching, eliminate SMARTDRV
or buy more memory.
Q. I have to hit the escape key to get out of nested menus.
A. That is one way. The quickest way is to click the right mouse
button! That gets you out of any menu. So "click..click" with the
right mouse button and you're outa there. You can also press the
number 0 to exit menus with numbers.
You can also set the option to emulate DEU menus in the Setup Options
menu (alt+F5). This exists the menu after a selection is made.
Q. I don't want to type "E at the character prompt every time.
A. Select Edit and select "Load Options/Etc". Turn on the "AutoStart"
box (this is normally on by default). Now when you start, DeeP
automatically puts you in Edit mode.
Q. I don't want to use the mouse to change the direction of things.
A. Use the new <> command in things to instantly change the
direction!
Q. I can't change the default textures in an INI file.
A. Unlike DEU, you can change all the defaults in DeeP and they are
automatically saved. No need to mess with the INI file (and there
isn't one).
