Antithetical Proverbs
An antithetical proverb presents a
thought in the first line, then follows with
the negative of that thought in the second
line. Many times the theme of an antithetical
proverb follows this format: "If you do this
and that, you will be blessed; but if you
don't, this will happen." The second line
emphasizes the first. You will always find
the word "but" somewhere in an antithetical
proverb. Usually it will be found between the
first and second lines.
Examples of Antithetical Proverbs
"Say not thou, I will recompense evil;
but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee"
(Proverbs 20:22).
"The king's wrath is as the roaring of a
lion; but his favour is as dew upon the
grass" (Proverbs 19:12).
"He that covereth a transgression
seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter
separateth very friends" (Proverbs 17:9).
