  1. The Source of Wisdom

  3.      Let us  consider the words  of Job about
  4. this vital subject of wisdom:

  6.      "But  where shall  wisdom be  found? and
  7. where  is  the  place  of  understanding? Man
  8. knoweth not the price  thereof; neither is it
  9. found in  the land of  the living. The  depth
  10. saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It
  11. is not with me. It cannot be gotten for gold,
  12. neither shall silver be weighed for the price
  13. thereof. It cannot be valued with the gold of
  14. Ophir,  with   the  precious  onyx,   or  the
  15. sapphire.  The  gold  and  the crystal cannot
  16. equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be
  17. for jewels of fine  gold. No mention shall be
  18. made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of
  19. wisdom is above rubies. The topaz of Ethiopia
  20. shall  not  equal  it,  neither  shall  it be
  21. valued  with  pure  gold.  Whence then cometh
  22. wisdom?   and   where   is   the   place   of
  23. understanding? Seeing it is hid from the eyes
  24. of all living, and  kept close from the fowls
  25. of  the air.  Destruction and  death say,  We
  26. have  heard the  fame thereof  with our ears.
  27. God  understandeth  the  way  thereof, and He
  28. knoweth the place thereof.  For He looketh to
  29. the ends  of the earth,  and seeth under  the
  30. whole  heaven;  to  make  the  weight for the
  31. winds; and He weigheth the waters by measure.
  32. When He made a decree for the rain, and a way
  33. for the lightning of the thunder: then did He
  34. see it, and declare  it; He prepared it, yea,
  35. and searched  it out. And  unto man He  said,
  36. Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;
  37. and  to  depart  from  evil is understanding"
  38. (Job 28:12-24).

  40.      Job here points out that man is not able
  41. to find  wisdom on his own:  "Man knoweth not
  42. the price thereof; neither is it found in the
  43. land of the living" (v. 13).

  45.      Job also tells us  that wisdom is not to
  46. be found  in nature: "The depth  saith, It is
  47. not in me: and the  sea saith, It is not with
  48. me" (v. 14). Neither can wisdom be purchased:
  49. "It cannot be gotten  for gold, neither shall
  50. silver be weighed for  the price thereof" (v.
  51. 15).

  53.      Job concludes by  stating that wisdom is
  54. actually the fear (or reverence) of the LORD:
  55. "And unto  man He said,  Behold, the fear  of
  56. the Lord, that is  wisdom; and to depart from
  57. evil is understanding" (v. 28).

  59.      To  obtain  wisdom,  the  first thing we
  60. must do is to recognize that all wisdom comes
  61. from God.  Since God has  revealed Himself to
  62. mankind  through His  word, we  will find the
  63. key  to wisdom  there. If  we want  to become
  64. wise, we must first  read and reverence God's
  65. word.
