347To perform a dilation and curettage. or D & C, your physician will start by using a series of surgical instruments called dilators. These tapering rods are used to open, or dilate, the cervix. After dilation, your physician inserts another instrument, called a curette, which is used to scrape a small amount of tissue from the wall of the uterus.
