419A narrow tunnel through your wrist--the carpal tunnel--protects your median nerve, which provides sensation to your thumb, index and middle fingers, and the thumb side of your ring finger. When swelling or inflammation occurs at the tunnel, the median nerve can be compressed, producing pain and numbness. If conservative treatment is not effective, the carpal tunnel ligament may be severed to relieve the compression.
