323In the surgical procedure known as ileo-anal anastomosis, the diseased colon and rectum are removed but the anal sphincter muscles are left intact. The small intestine, or ileum, is then stitched directly to the anus. This procedure allows for near normal passage of stool rather than the permanent use of an ileostomy bag.
