  1. Late Release Notes for XFree86/OS2 3.3.3.1

  4. This file contains latest information that did not make it into
  5. the documentation by the time the version 3.3.3.1 was finalized.
  6.  
  7. - XFree86-3.3.3.1 is a bugfix release over 3.3.3, and does not contain
  8.   new features. To update, you usually only need a new server binary.
  9.   The documentation still frequently refers to the version 3.3.3. If so,
  10.   it also applies to 3.3.3.1.
  11.  
  12. - Read the XOS2FAQ.HTM file which comes with this distribution.
  13.   This file is HTML code and is best read with a Web reader, e.g. explore
  14.   or netscape. It is located in the \XFree86\lib\X11\doc directory.

  16. - I am still not persuaded that 3.3.3 fixes the problem with the
  17.   PCI recognition of various Matrox cards. If you have a Matrox
  18.   card that appears as a generic VGA with 64K, starting up in a lousy
  19.   resolution, then add the option
  20.         PCIProbe2
  21.   to the "ServerFlags" section of your XF86Config file.
  22.  
  23. - Xprt, Xnest, and Xvfb are still broken in this version, and are not in the
  24.   distribution (Xprt.zip, Xnest.zip, Xvfb.zip) even if some other
  25.   docs claim the converse. These three programs are not too interesting
  26.   anyway, IMHO.

  28. - XFree86-3.3.3 has been tested with Warp4/noFP, Warp4/FP7, Warp4/FP9
  29.   and I am optimistic, form past experiences, that some other FPs also work.
  30.   In general, XFree86 is rather independent from FP fixes, so if you have
  31.   problems they are most likely not to be influenced by up- or downgrading
  32.   the FP level. Exception video drivers: some corruption problems switching
  33.   between XFree86 and PM result from defective or bad written PM drivers,
  34.   and either upgrading to a new version, as well as in some cases returning
  35.   to an older version may changes something.

  37. - XF86SUP.SYS has has been updated to behave correctly with Aurora beta,
  38.   but there is still a problem with Aurora and XFree86, causing crashes.
  39.   It is *not* recommended to use XFree86 with Aurora. Use it with Warp 3 or 4
  40.   (with or without fixpacks).

  42. - It has been reported that SHM.DLL is still broken. No surprise. It has
  43.   also been reported that the use of a "small" server (S*.zip) will cure
  44.   problems where the server crashes when programs using XShm run. Gimp is
  45.   one of these candidates. Use GIMP without SHM (--no-xshm option (sp?)).

  49.   There is the official XFree86/OS2 bugs page <http://set.gmd.de/~veit/os2/xf86bugs.html> 
  50.   which is updated when new bugs are found (maybe even together with
  51.   a workaround). Please consult this page before reporting a bug.

  53.   Read the FAQ and ALL OTHER DOCUMENTS that are available before claiming
  54.   something is a bug.

  56.   Older versions, such as 3.3, 3.3.1, and 3.3.2 are no longer supported, once 
  57.   XFree86-3.3.3.1 is available. I won't react to bug reports that refer
  58.   to old code (unless you find out that XYZZY worked with an old version
  59.   of XFree86, and now no longer does).

  63. - Commercial users: there is no warranty, nor do you have any title 
  64.   on getting an immediate fix. Read the file COPYRIGHT for details.

  66. - If you would like to write an article in a newspaper or magazine about this
  67.   system, please feel free to do this (but understand: you get what you
  68.   have paid for - it is usually considered as bad style to bash on software
  69.   which you get for free).
