About This Font
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Caveman was created for the fun of it. There are far more useful and/or
decorative fonts around, but it has its uses. Caveman has no lower case
characters, instead, the lower case contains variations of the upper case
characters. The complete Caveman character set is shown here:
How Fonts Work
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Every PostScript typeface is made up of three parts: The printer file, the
screen fonts, or bitmap fonts, and the Adobe Font Metrics file.
The printer file is the actual PostScript code used to print all the characters
in a typeface. Its icon is a LaserWriter NTX with the letter F in a box.
NOTE: Before PostScript took over the typesetting industry, the words typeface
and font referred to two different things. The typeface referred to a specific
style of type, such as Avant Garde, or Optima. Font referred to a specific type
size, such as Helvetica 12 point. Since type point sizes are not specific to
PostScript type styles, the words font and typeface are now used
interchangeably.
The screen fonts are bitmapped representations of the PostScript fonts. They
are used to select the desired typeface and to show you approximately how each
font will appear on the page. The icon for the screen fonts is a suitcase with
an A on it.
The Adobe Font Metrics (AFM) file is a special auxillary file that contains
extra information on kerned pairs, and how each character is spaced. Since the
information in the AFM file is also contained in the FOND resource for each
typeface, it is not really necessary for most Macintosh applications.
Whenever you select a typeface for printing, several things happen. First the
printer looks for the typeface in its own memory. If the typeface is installed
it then uses it. If the typeface is not in the memory of the printer, it then
looks for it on the hard drive (if it is an NTXII), or in the current System
Folder. If the Postscript file is in the System Folder, it is then sent to the
printer. Otherwise, the type will appear either as Courier or in its bitmapped
version.
Installing This Font
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fonts are installed in two parts: First, you must install the bitmaps, using
either Font/DA Mover, or a font installation DA (Suitcase II is a good one).
Next, you must move the printer files into the System folder, or else install
them in your printers hard disk. For more information on either of these
procedures, click on the appropriate icon.
For most applications, the best place to put your Postscript fonts and AFM
files is in your System folder. To do this, simply drag the printer font icon
and the AFM file icon into the System folder. DO NOT put these files inside
another folder within the System folder.
You can install the screen fonts (the bitmapped versions of the typeface) by
using either Suitcase II, or the Font/DA Mover. To install this font, you must
use Font/DA Mover version 3.8 or later. Earlier versions of this application
may cause problems. If you are using Suitcase II (which we recommend), you
should keep the bitmaps in a folder labeled 'Fonts' inside the System folder.
