  5.      DSTAT-X is a program that can be used to do a quick "Show 
  6. Info" of a drive connected to the Atari ST/e/TT computer.  It 
  7. gives information on:
  8.  
  9.           o    the volume name of the disk.
  10.           o    whether or not the disk has an executable boot 
  11.                sector or not.
  12.           o    the OEM identifier (i.e. the name of the company 
  13.                who makes the software you formatted a hard disk 
  14.                with.
  15.           o    the number of sides on the disk.
  16.           o    the number of bytes per sector on the disk.
  17.           o    the number of sectors per track on the disk.
  18.                (NOTE: Hard disks may return a 0 here)
  19.           o    the number of sectors per cluster (usually 2).
  20.           o    the total number of clusters on the disk.
  21.           o    the total size of the disk in bytes.
  22.           o    the amount of free space on the disk in bytes 
  23.                (this is what everyone will *really* want to 
  24.                know...<grin>)
  25.           o    the amount of free space on the disk as a 
  26.                percentage of the total space on the disk.

  29.      DSTAT-X runs as a .PRG, .ACC, or as a .WNX.  I'm sure you 
  30. are familiar with what .PRG and .ACC are, but the .WNX is a bit 
  31. different.

  33.      A while ago, I started writing an extensible control panel 
  34. for the Atari ST, and found out Atari was doing the same, so to 
  35. try to do them one better, I've made one that has a different 
  36. guiding concept behind it.
  37.  
  38.      Like the Mac CDEV Control Panel and Atari's XCONTROL, my 
  39. "control panel", my program, Wind-XES, can also load in 
  40. applications (not necessarily small ones, either), and run them 
  41. as if they were part of itself.  Wind-XES itself runs as either a 
  42. program (.PRG) or a desk accessory (.ACC).  The big difference is 
  43. that in the Atari and Mac CPs, you can only work with a single 
  44. application from within them at a time (at least from inside 
  45. their main window), whereas under Wind-XES, all of the .WNXes can 
  46. work concurrently, under GEM, and you have instant access to all 
  47. of them within the main Wind-XES window.

  49.      The concept is a bit difficult to describe, but what it 
  50. amounts to is the ability to run up to 6 copies of Wind-XES, 
  51. with up to 32 WNXes each, for a grand total of 192 WNXes resident 
  52. at one time.  I wouldn't suggest doing this, though, unless you 
  53. have the CPU speed to bear with 192 processes at once... Each 
  54. individual .WNX, remember, has its own little share of the CPU 
  55. time it has to have, so what it effectively does is multitask all 
  56. of the processes at once.  (NOTE: No, this is not going to 
  57. multitask normal programs, like Calamus, only programs written to 
  58. take advantage of this method.  But the effect to the user is 
  59. pretty much the same as what you would expect when using a 
  60. typical MT enviroment with a GUI...)

  62.      Coming soon will be another demo of Wind-XES which will be a 
  63. bit more eye-popping than the previous versions anyone may have 
  64. seen floating around on CIS or GEnie last year.

  78. P.S. to the guys at Double Click:  I can still write a better 
  79. disk statistician program than Mike Vederman.  Always have, 
  80. always will.  Ahem.  And even if DC Disk Stat 1.0 is 5k on a 
  81. disk, it still takes 10k of RAM to run, *just like DSTAT-X*... so 
  82. there, guys!  nyaaaaaah...  <grin>
