- The In-Touch Personal Information
- Manager (PIM) is a forms based
- database management system which:
- - uses a hierarchical, menu based
- user interface, specified by text
- based menu specification files,
- - allows record search, retrieval
- and data entry via text based
- form specification files,
- - saves data in a data file
- associated with the form,
- - displays field, form, menu
- sensitive help and,
- - implements simple field edit
- checking.
-
- PIM consists of three modes of
- operation, or 'Function' Managers:
- - Menu Manager
- - Form Manager
- - Services Manager
-
- The PIM Menu Manager offers a
- hierarchical, menu based user
- interface. Each menu item may call
- a subsequent menu or a form. PIM
- starts with the Menu Manager in
- control displaying the Main Menu.
-
- The PIM Form Manager allows data
- entry, record search, storage and
- retrieval. The Form Manager is
- accessed when a form item is
- selected from a Menu. A Look-Up
- Window is used to locate existing
- records that are to be viewed,
- changed or deleted. A Look-up
- Window may also be used on selected
- fields to access reference data to
- be inserted into one or more fields
- of the active form. Only one active
- form and one active data set are
- allowed at any one time.
-
- The PIM Services Manager provides
- access to a fixed set of functions
- accessed at any time by the user
- from either the Menu Manager or Form
- Manager.
-
- <F2> accesses the Help Facility to
- display a context sensitive help
- description based on the current
- cursor position. Pressing <F2> a
- second time displays general help
- for either the Menu Manager or the
- Form Manager.
-
- The data files can be set as
- read-only so they can only be
- updated by PIM. In addition, any
- new or changed records can be logged
- so as to maintain an audit trail.
