  1.                    GNCIPHER - CHALLENGES FROM THE CRYTO

  3. GNCIPHER is a  game  produced for the Atari  ST  line  of  computers  as 
  4. SHAREWARE.  We encourage you to give it to friends, neighbors,  and even 
  5. your  enemies.  Please post this program to as many bulletin boards  and 
  6. computer clubs of which you are a member or an assocaite so that it will 
  7. become      widely     distributed     and     enjoyed      by      all. 
  8. It may be freely copied and distributed for evaluation.

  10. In brief, GNCIPHER is a  phrase decoding game  which is mouse driven and 
  11. comes  with  a  large  library  of  pre-entered  phrases  called  CIPHER 
  12. CHALENGES.  Cyrptography is a very difficult challenge, even with simple 
  13. letter  replacement  as  is the case with GNCIPHER.  You will find  that 
  14. some of CIPHER CHALLENGES vary from the easy to the extremely difficult.

  16. GNCIPHER is distributed in an ARC file containing 4 files:

  19.      GNCIPHER.PRG     the GNCIPHER program
  20.      GNCIPHER.HLP     the GNCIPHER HELP file
  21.      GNCIPHER.DAT     CIPHER CHALLENGE phrases (game data)

  23. All the files,  except README,  must be located in the same directory in 
  24. order  for  the game to operate.  GNCIPHER will not run when any file is 
  25. absent.

  27. The  CIPHER CHALLENGE phrases included in the original ARC file  are  to 
  28. the  best  of  our knowledge all in the public  domain.  There  are  500 
  29. phrases from famous,  infamous, and otherwise unknown people. Quotations 
  30. are taken from famous Americans like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, 
  31. Thomas Jefferson,  Albert Einstein,  and Benjamin Franklin. Other quotes 
  32. are  from Greek and Latin philosophers,  cultural groups  (e.g.  Polish, 
  33. Italian,  etc.), world religions (e.g. Moslem, Confusism, Christianity),  
  34. near modern politicians (e.g.  Eisenhower, Coolidge, Marx), and literary 
  35. wits (e.g.  Mark Twain). The complexity and possible alien nature of the 
  36. authors  names would exceedingly complicate the  CIPHER  CHALLENGES,  so 
  37. they have been omitted for brevity.  For those interested in finding the 
  38. source  of any given quotation or phrase,  a good book of phrases  at  a 
  39. local library may be the best resource.

  41. GNCIPHER has  been carefully tested for a long time before  release  for
  42. public  consumption  and has  no known errors.  If you should  find that
  43. GNCIPHER fails in some way, we suggest that you may wish to find another
  44. copy  to  check  whether  one   of  the files  has  in some  way  become
  45. corrupted.  We welcome all comments concerning our SHAREWARE program and 
  46. would  encourage  you  to write to us using the  address  below  and  as
  47. displayed in the GNCIPHER program.

  49. Given the extensibility of the GNCIPHER.DAT file,  we  encourage you  to 
  50. only distribute new GNCIPHER.DAT files  (containing extra phrases) which
  51. you are certain do not infringe upon any copyrights.   Many  interesting,
  52. amusing, and pithy comments exist which you may wish  to draw upon.  One
  53. limitation  which  exists  in  this  version  of  GNCIPHER  is  that the 
  54. GNCIPHER.DAT  file  can  only  contain  750 phrases.  This limitation is
  55. enforced to  ensure  that GNCIPHER is able to load all the phrases  into 
  56. memory on an Atari 520ST. We expect that most  people will likely choose
  57. to try  the  500  supplied phrases before trying to add more.
