- Released into the public domain August 11,1990
- This game may be freely distributed as long as the following

- VALGUS.ICE -- a DC Desktop icon
- VALGUS20.DOC -- this documentation file
-
-
- MAJOR CHANGES
- =============
-
- Valgus 2.0 is a complete rewrite of Valgus. Therefore, bugs in
- the previous versions should be eliminated. (And new ones have
- probably been introduced. Sigh.)
- Two players may now compete simultaneously.
- You can play against the computer.
- Valgus will now work on monochrome monitors.
-
-
- STARTING THE GAME
- =================
-
- VALGUS20.PRG and VAL20.O must be in the same folder. Valgus will
- also create a high score file (SCORES.V20) when run if this file
- does not already exist. Switch your monitor to low or high
- resolution if you have not already done so. Double click on the
- VALGUS20.PRG icon. You should see a title screen. At this
- point, you may hit F10 to start the game, UNDO to quit, SPACE to
- toggle between the title screen and the high score lists, or F1
- or F2 to change the game options. The difficulty can be set to
- hard or easy, and you can play by yourself, against the computer,
- or against another person.
-
-
- PLAYING THE GAME
- ================
-
- Player one controls the puzzle on the left side of the screen.
- Player two (or the computer) plays the puzzle on the right side.
- Player one's control is the joystick plugged into the joystick
- port, while player two uses the joystick plugged into the mouse
- port. Moving the joystick left, right, or down moves your shape
- in that direction. Pushing the joystick button rotates your
- shape, provided there is enough room. When a shape falls as far
- as it can, it will freeze into place and a new shape will appear
- at the top of the screen. When you complete a line across the
- screen, it will disappear and the rest of the puzzle will fall
- down. When you have completed enough lines (10 in the first
- round, 12 in the second, then 14, 16, and so on), you will be
- awarded a bonus and will move on to the next round. The game
- ends when the next piece (which is shown to the side of the
- puzzle) cannot fit at the top of the screen. At this point, if
- your score is among the top ten, you can enter your initials or
- name (up to 5 letters) to be saved for eternity (or until you do
- better). Separate high score lists are maintained the different
- combinations of game options. (Note that player vs. computer
- counts as two player.)
-
-
- ROUNDS
- ======
-
- Unlike the official computer version of Tetris, where the shapes
- keep piling up forever, Valgus plays like the arcade version,
- where after you complete a certain number of lines, the screen
- clears. There are also special rounds. In rounds 2,8,14... the
- walls will be moved in at the bottom of the puzzle. In rounds
- 3,9,15... there will be a pattern of blocks at the bottom of the
- puzzle. In rounds 5,11,17... there will be a random scattering
- of blocks at the bottom, and in rounds 6,12,18... rows of blocks
- will be randomly shifted around.
-
-
- SCORING
- =======
-
- Dropping a shape -- Score depends on the round, how far down the
- shape got, and how fast you got it there.
-
- Finishing a line -- 100 for one line, 300 for two, 700 for three
- and 1500 for four (a "Valgus").
-
- Finishing first -- In two player games, if you complete a round
- before your opponent does, you get 1000
- points.
-
- Computer dying -- If the computer fails to complete a round
- that you do, you get 5000 points.
-
- End of round -- You get a bonus for each open line at the
- top of the puzzle. 50 per line in round
- one, 100 in round two, 150 in round three,
- etc.

- THE ICON
- ========
-
- The icon in the file VALGUS.ICE should be imported into your
- DCDSKTOP.ICE file if you have one. You could even change it for
- Tetris, TetriST, Pile-Up, and all the other Tetris clones.
- Include it in all your icon collections!
-
-
-
- VALGUS^2
- ========
-
- Valgus Squared is a Tetris derivative similar to Welltris. It is
- played on a 27x27 playfield with a 3x3 block in the middle.
- Shapes appear at one of the four sides and continue towards the
- opposite side until they hit it or run into the center block or
- any previously played pieces. The object of the game is to
- complete concentric squares around the center block. In later
- rounds, two pieces fall from different sides at the same time!
- Valgus^2 is available on GEnie and CompuServe. If you do not
