-
-
- FROM THE AUTHOR The Atari ST has always been a computer with lots of
- """"""""""""""" RAM (compared to the competition). Programmers responded
- to this with a large offer of ram spooler utilities (accessory or program),
- in many cases combined with a ram disk. Without doubt, this is a very good
- solution for ST users without harddisk. The latest evolution in computing
- however, changes this situation thoroughly. Desktop publishing programs,
- powerful wordprocessors, graphic programs etc. use more and more RAM. As
- RAM is quite expensive, these programs tend to use the hard disk instead:
- parts of RAM memory are save to disk and loaded whenever needed. This
- technique is refered to as 'virtual memory'. As a result of this evolution,
- lots of ST users now have a harddisk. This makes disk spooling (as found
- on large systems) also interesting for those users. GEM Spooler makes it
- possible !
-
- GEM Spooler is - as far as we know - the first disk spooler for the
- Atari ST. While other operating systems have always used disk spooling
- (minis, OS/2, Macintosh, Windows 3) the ST missed this feature. With GEM
- Spooler this is history.
-
- [*][*][*]
-
-
- MINI_BYTE BY RICHARD [3 1/2 Lamps] GEM Spooler is a unique utility and a
- """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" welcome addition to the ST and TT
- lines. Unlike its brethren, GEM Spooler uses either a floppy or hard disk
- to store the files to be spooled while still offering background operation.
- The program seems well written and very thorough in implementation.
- However its speed lacks the zip I'm now used to, and perhaps needs some
- adjustments for use with GDOS or other graphics-based printing (the bulk of
- my work). GEM Spooler has an above average $30 registration fee, but this
- brings additional capabilities. This offering is intriguing to the point
- of my wanting to register it with its Belgian authors. Though unclear as to
- its ultimate utility, I'll venture a hopeful guess and give it three and a
- half lamps on our scale of five.
-
-
- MINI_BYTE BY TERRY [4 Lamps] Gem Spooler 2.2 is one of those rare ST
- """""""""""""""""""""""""""" programs which other computer platforms have
- had for some time but has been slow to appear for the ST. In this case,
- what you have here is a printer spooler that is extremely modest in its
- hardware requirements and can be used with almost any application. What
- makes it unique is that unlike any other spooler for the ST, this one
- spools from the disk, not memory. As a result, it makes little difference
- how large the files are you print, your machine is freed up in short order.
- In fact, it will spool multiple files while one is printing so you can even
- do multiple DTP jobs in short order.
-
- Does it have any limitations? Well it has a couple that should be
- obvious. First, programs like Calamus which print directly to the printer
- port will not benefit. Second, programs which are heavily processor bound
- (like the original Timeworks DTP) will not be speeded up as much as you
- would think. You also must read the documentation very carefully since
- many aspects of its operation are not immediately clear and a 100%
- installation is somewhat complex.
-
- Make no mistake about it though, this program is well worth the
- somewhat expensive ($30) shareware fee. It richly deserves a grade of at
- least 4 lamps but IMHO misses the top grade due to the complex installation
- (at least for a Deskjet 550).
-
-
- MINI_BYTE BY JOHN [5 Lamps] One thing I have always accepted is the fact
- """"""""""""""""""""""""""" once I began printing a long document (or a
- short GDOS file, for that matter) I could leave my computer and get a cup
- of coffee. Sure, I could install a huge print spooler (it would have to be
- about 500K for a Calligrapher page of text), but who wanted to tie up the
- memory? Now you no longer have time for coffee _or_ have to give up large
- chuncks of precious RAM - GEM Spool has arrived in North America!
-
- GemSpool requires 90K of memory, but gives you the abilities of a ram
- disk the size of the free space on your hard drive. The program has many
- configurations, one that I like is the ability to request a 'prompt' when a
- job is sent to the printer. This allows a few things - if you accidently
- sent the job to the printer you can 'discard' it right then and there and
- you can then choose to print the job and 'discard' the job file, print the
- job and 'keep' the job file for later printings, or 'hold' the job file for
- later printings (you can also choose the number of copies to print at this
- time). Note, this job file can be HUGE for some GDOS applications - so
- better to have a hard disk or a clean HD floppy desginated as the spool
- directory.
-
- Another feature is the intelligent print filter, which can be used to
- substitute characters, and the printer command buttons. These buttons are
- great for sending your printer commands rather than getting up and hitting
- cryptic panel button combinations. Four of the buttons are 'hardwired' and
- four are user configurable (all require you to supply the printer 'escape'
- commands found in your printer manuals). If I need to print my DayRunner
- daily calendar, I'll call up GemSpool - hit my 'IBM' (alternate character
- set command) and '20CPI' buttons, call on my Harlekin II datebook and print
- away.
-
- As you can see, I can hardly stop talking about this program. I give
- it the MAXIMUM 5 lamps (more if I could) - a DEFINITE download if you have
- a printer (not laser) connected to your system.

- CAMPAIGN: Game Review
- """""""""""""""""""""
- By Paul Varn
- [P.VARN]
-
-
-
- >>> CAMPAIGN <<<
- """"""""""""""""
- ~ Tactical and Strategic War Simulation ~
- By Empire Software
-
- CAMPAIGN OUICKVIEW Includes 1 unprotected double sided disk, 80 page User
- """""""""""""""""" Guide, 169 page equipment fact guide with protection,
- color glossy map of the Normandy invasion, two full size Brittish WWII
- posters, two postcard sized Brittish WWII posters, and an authentic 4 page
- reproduction of the London Times featuring articles during the close of the
- war. Atari version works on ST, STe, and Mega ST machines with 512K RAM or
- more, and color monitor.
-
- The computer market has always been flooded with war games. As with
- board games, (after which most are modeled) there is a toward a two
- dimensional approach. Seen from above, everything is flat tokens on a
- map. This game is part map, and part three dimensional. The traditional
- board game approach has been modified slightly by eliminating complex
- tokens and symbols, along with movement squares and hexes, in favor of
- dots, (representing a group of battle equipment) user defined names, and
- movement lines drawn with the mouse.
-
-
- OVERVIEW Very similar to the tank game Conqueror, (much of the three
- """""""" dimensional code engine must come from there) where you have a
- local area map displaying terrain and location of forces, Campaign has
- included three levels. With the general idea of simulating famous armored
- battles of World War Two, a large continental map with general terrain
- features of the historical battle area permits logistical support, air
- cover, and coordination of forces. Pause is available at all screen levels
- and time advance in large map mode. Saves are possible by saving the map
- at any point in the game while still in large map mode.
-
- The next level is activated when two forces meet in battle. This
- displays a local terrain map (here's where you'll begin to recognize the
- similarity to Conqueror) with the position of individual machines. Here
- they can be dragged to locations, dug-in, repaired, fueled, re-armed
- behind lines, and directed to locations. Air cover and artillery are
- available also. Next level is where the player can take direct control of
- each unit in 3D action external view. At this point everything is
- identical to Conqueror with the local visibility restriction removed.
- Terrain, forces and battle action can be seen at a distance you would
- expect in real battle. The units not directly controlled are computer
- guided. Alerts are provided if particular forces in manual control need
- your attention.
-
-
- LARGE LOGISTICAL MAP DETAIL Many pre-drawn battle scenarios from simple
- """"""""""""""""""""""""""" 2 group encounters, to full scale Normandy
- invasion provides lots of action without getting involved in the complexity
- of map creation. In addition, there's a map editor within the game program
- that permits editing most terrain features and all forces at will during
- the game. The editor does have the limitation where pre- drawn maps only
- can be loaded and edited. Maps with continental features cannot have the
- general land and water mass features edited.
-
- What can be edited are lakes, rivers, marshes, sand, grass, hills,
- roads, woods, minefields, objectives, and towns. In addition, all the
- force groups down to the individual units can be edited in great detail.
- The user can determine the number and type of units in each group. There
- are over 150 unit types, each with several individual characteristics
- including aircraft, transport vehicles, recon jeeps and half tracks, tanks,
- armored cars, anti-tank and field artillery, tow vehicles, engineer
- vehicles, ships, supply convoys, and facories, with fuel and ammo dumps.
- Seemingly endless variety of battle configurations can be created with
- astounding detail and reality. Each machine is kept track of in intimate
- detail at all stages of the game. This detail is not always necessary to
- play, so the user can ignore most in favor of smooth game flow.
-
- As few as 14, or as many as 20 attributes of each piece of equipment
- is detailed and figured into play. Machines are arranged into groups,
- (machine types can be combined at will except land, sea, and air machines
- cannot be combined) and the groups given names, with choice of display
- mode. Moving or viewing the attributes of groups is simply a matter of
- clicking on them. A right mouse click selects the destination with a line
- drawn. The group travels along the line at the speed determined by time of
- day, how long they've been moving, terrain, speed of slowest vehicle,
- breakdowns, and whether they were engaged in battle recently. Every group
- has their own hidden supply vehicles of fuel and ammo. When this is
- exhausted, factories have to supply these in the form of convoys delivering
- to dumps or to the groups in the field.
-
- Groups can also be set to dig in (useful for artillery bombardments)
- under automatic or manual control. The user can control as much or little
- as desired, all groups can select their own strategies and objectives.
- Enemies spotted by groups may automatically bring air groups in to provide
- support. Ships in auto mode will fire within range to support a local
- battle area. Groups with engineers can be commanded to clear or lay mine
- fields. The detail and variety is astounding.
-
- Several levels of mouse controlled zoom and neatly simple scrolling
- permit instant location to any portion and desired level of map detail.
- No sorting through layered icons to determine what's in there or looking up
- charts to find their characteristics. General information can be had by
- clicking on a group. All the machines in a group can be displayed in rows
- of 2D images and detailed 3D images with detailed attributes provided when
- each machine is selected. Two clicks away and you're back at the large
- map.
-
-
- Local Battle Detail When forces are close enough to battle, there's a
- """"""""""""""""""" choice of automatic or manual combat. In manual,
- the local terrain map is presented with a stylized marker for each machine
- type. Every attribute of each machine or unit is available with a mouse
- click. The user can get quick general status, or detailed report. Defense
- lines and ambushes can be set. Enemy positions are displayed depending on
- air or land recon. Available air forces can be commanded to search or
- attack locations. Nearby artillery can be directed to fire on areas.
- Towns, forests, minefields, water, and roads are displayed with appropriate
- detail. Wooded areas and buildings are actually done with remarkable
- detail. All units can be placed in computer or user control and will
- engage enemy in the appropriate manor when confronted regardless of your
- attention at the time.
-
-
- 3D Battle Detail User selected units can be controlled directly through
- """""""""""""""" key presses. The keys for driving, turrets, and firing
- can be configured. The user can control the driver, and/or gunner or let
- the computer control the other, or both if you want to sit and watch. It's
- possible for skilled work here to turn the tide of what might be a toss-up
- or losing battle in automatic mode. The graphic detail for the scenery,
- explosions, and units can be configured for maximum realism or maximum
- speed. There is a lot of detail for buildings, forests, and units
- available even at the simplest levels. I've found this level very
- satisfying and action-packed.
-
- Watch from several vantage points as four of your M4 Shermans dug in
- surrounding a town wait for a row of giant Panther tanks zooming through
- on a hit and run manouver. As your forces open fire, watch their turrets
- spin to return fire and chassis scatter to prevent direct hits. Shells fly
- through the air flashing with thudding explosions as craters begin to
- litter the landscape. The building bursts and crumbles next to you as a
- near miss warns of impending danger. You search to target the attacker and
- fire too quickly, shattering a tree behind the quickly fleeing behemoth.
- Two of your team mate's shells converge on another Panther as it struggles
- to free itself from the confines of a friendly unit's wreckage. Smoke
- rises from a shattered hull. The momentary quiet provides a chance to
- asses the battle. Not so bad here. Elsewhere, the losses were greater.
- Time to re-group.
-
-
- Bugs, Oh no! If it weren't for a couple of nasty critters, this would
- """""""""""" get my war game of the century award. The worst is when a
- factory delivers supplies to a destination. The convoy will display its
- proper contents of whatever you told the factory to produce until that
- material is retrieved by a group. Unintended machines will sometimes be
- added at this point, confusing the program as to what to do with them.
- This will crash the program sooner or later. An example is a convoy that
- is supposed to deliver 10 aircraft to an airfield. Right up to delivery,
- everything will display as normal when interrogated. When delivery occurs,
- two or more of the airplanes will be substituted with artillery or jeeps.
- When the program tries to select these to join an attack, the crash will
- result from trying to make cannon fly.
-
- I've been able to head off many of these problems by catching them
- before the program tries to select them (not always possible.) I start up
- the map editor and selectively delete each of the errant pieces. Of
- course it means you get fewer replacements than you ordered. If a save map
- is attempted that includes any of these supply sargent foul-ups, a map will
- be created so large it won't be able to re-load, if it can be created at
- all. Another solution is to avoid games with Factory supply or limit its
- use.
-
- Another beasty appears when in the large and battle map modes. It's
- unpredictable and fortunately happens seldom. The program has a peculiar
- reaction to this one. Two Bombs, the program accesses the disk, and the
- game continues. Strange. If you are in battle, the battle will often
- resolve without the action sequence. More often than not, all forces and
- game strategy will be intact. Sometimes it will inform you that the
- result of the battle is that you gained several thousand tanks with the
- screen filling with attempts to display them all. Re-boot time. Solution
- - Have a blank formatted disk available for map saves only and save often.
- Multiple filenames can be created.
-
- I have a gripe with the file selector system. Ninety percent of all
- games seem to break down here. How come? The user sees what looks like a
- typical file selector that acts in a very unconventional manor. It took
- me a lot of time to figure out why I couldn't load and save. The
- impression is that you can click on file names in the conventional manor
- but no. I could spend a lot of space here trying to describe it's
- operation but will settle with saying it can be discovered with patience,
- but looks like the programmer doesn't know how ST users expect it to
- operate.
-
- What has made complex map battle games both appealing and
- discouraging to me has been the necessity for complex detail to prevent
- boredom and provide a sense of reality. Unfortunately, this usually
- requires the computer control and visualization to be complex and tiresome,
- never revealing the true scope of the battle, but forcing attention to
- minute, nearly meaningless detail. The insightful skill of the programmer
- into the range of problems games of this type have, has produced the most
- intuitive, simple, and tactically rewarding land battle simulation I've
- seen. I would like to see the posters and paper excluded in a 1 disk game
- that lacks play testing. All this makes the game seem a little expensive.
- Let's get rid of the fillers and clean up the code.

- Author : Dave Munsie
- Version Reviewed: 1.0
- File Type : Free Ware
-
- Dark Pearl requires a joystick / color monitor and a 1 meg ST/Ste.
-
- [*][*][*]
-
-
- WHAT IT IS In Dark Pearl you control the bouncing of a black pearl to
- """""""""" make it bounce on the right tiles to gain points. Miss the
- tiles and you lose one of three pearls.
-
- WHAT IT DOES The object of Dark Pearl is to traverse the vertically
- """""""""""" scrolling field while picking up (bouncing on) the
- red-green-blue jewels along the way. Various tiles will help or hinder you
- on the way. When you make it all the way up to the top of the field (7
- screens up) and all of the jewels are collected you proceed to the next
- level! If you still have jewels left you are sent back to the start of the
- field to try again. There are 10 levels in all.
-
- This game has commercial quality graphics and provides simple but
- challenging play. Definitely worth a look.

- the latest Fair information.
-
- [*][*][*]
-
-
- I've also heard a rumor concerning a new German speaking Swiss
- magazine but, as of today, haven't seen it.
-
- Most German speaking magazines also have large gaming review
- sections, always in the back. XEST also does a good job of publishing game
- cheats too, complete with maps.
-
- Also because of the lack of Atari products or news or anything else
- interesting the magazine sometimes go off into other areas featuring
- information on anything concerning itself with Atari no matter how far
- fetched. So it not too unusal to see an article about the Next (68030
- processor) or DOS (sounds like TOS) or 'OOP' programming (we have 'C'
- without the '++' don't we?). Press releases are a favorite too (sometimes
- printed word for word including all errrorrs and speeling missstakess). At
- times little fillers can take up whole pages and its also possible that a
- carton is printed twice (but not always in the same issue).
-
- In general German speaking Atari magazines contain tons of
- information, at times even competing with the online services. Lead times
- for Europeon magazines aren't months (or years) long as is the case with
- most American magazines --Antic was a good example-- so information is more
- timely and up to date.
-
- Many German developers (offical Atari developers) also love to write
- (and are quite good at it sometimes) so much of the 'latest and greatest'
- comes right from the horse's mouth. Want to know about Cookies,
- Mint/MultiTos (no Eric doesn't write in German - I don't think), XControl
- programming, GEM, Tex, keyboard controlers, DMA, THE FALCON? The guys with
- the offical Atari documentation and develpment units are out there writing
- away just hours, if not seconds, after they are allowed to. (in the case of
- MultiTos they use Mint as an excuse to write about Multi[backspace]
- [backspace] [backspace] [backspace] [backspace] Mint and that months before
- anybody else ever heard about either one.)

-
- WHAT IT DOES PC1QUENCE has a very simplistic user interface. By placing
- """""""""""" the hand pointer over various icons and clicking the left or
- right mouse button you can select one of the menu selections.
-
- PC1QUENCE loads selected PC1 pictures into the memory buffer and
- allows creation of a video sequence from the loaded pictures. After you
- have loaded your pictures you need to visualize ahead of time where in the
- sequence each picture should go. There are up to 100 sequence buffers
- available depending on system memory. After you decide where to put the
- picture you can select which type of effect to add to the picture. There
- are 30 different effects available for each sequence.

- effects provides a very interesting display.
-
- Operation is a little slow when moving from display to display due to
- the screen fade to black each time, however this is only required when
- changing program modes. Actual sequence creation is fairly fast once you
- accomplish the sequence a few times. The transition effects are very
- smooth and professional looking. Pictures are displayed from memory so
- there is no slow down if you don't have a hard drive. The speed of display
- has a range which should meet most needs, as well as a loop option for
- continuous shows.
-
- Overall the program is very good. It has no graphic edition
- capabilities which keeps it small for low memory systems. Only using PC1
- format limits graphic selection, but the results are very good. I only ran
- into one problem. I could only get the program to run on a bare system (no
- desk accessories or auto folder programs).
-
- If you are looking for a slide show program which uses PC1 pictures
- and provides a good variety of transitions, this program is for you.

-
- Well, I hope everyone at least had a Happy Easter. Mine was the usual

- Easter dinner. So where is all this leading too? Well, I'll tell ya...
- While I was having Easter dinner I was thinking about how much work good

- I knew a little something about cooking, I might be able to help her out
- next time. (Yes, I actually AM that nice of a guy :) So guess where I

- The Food and Wine Roundtable. Here, you can swap your favorite recipes,
- talk about kitchen equiptment, food preparation, starting a catering
- business, writing a cookbook, wine-tasting, beer-brewing -- anything and
- everything that has to do with food and wine is all here for the giving and

- RoundTable happenings, etc.
-
- So if your feeling guilty about not being able to help out good old

- """"""""""""""""""""
-
- ALL ABOARD! This game provides a new and unusual approach to role
- """"""""""" playing/war game type games. In this game you are in the
- role of the owner of a steam train in the future when the world is going
- through a nuclear winter in the year 2714. Not a very cheerful portrayal
- of the future.
-
- Transarctica is written by Silmarils, the same guys that did Ishar.
- The game comes on two disks and can be installed on the hard disk. In
- addition to the two disks there is a manual describing the operation of the
- game. The manual is written in three languages, French, English and
- German. The documentation indicates that the game will run on Atari ST and
- STE systems with a minimum of 1MB or memory. Installation on a hard disk
- takes about 1.3 MB.
-
-
- Gameplay In transarctica you are in charge of directing the operation of
- """""""" a train. In this role you have deal with trade, war, improving
- your train, managing your money, visiting cities and collecting clues about
- Project Blind and ultimately ending the nuclear winter. No problem, all in
- a days work! You'll travel from city to city buying and selling trade
- goods. You'll also find cities that will provide clues and sell additional
- train cars, mammoths and slaves. As you explore, you'll find travelling
- merchants with rare items or information. To make things more interesting,
- you can buy spies to obtain remote information of a variety of types. Your
- spies can also sabotage tracks and bridges.
-
- Your main enemy will be the Viking Union which controls the railroad
- network your train travels on. To aid in this activity they have a large
- army. After you've traveled around a bit, you will encounter Viking Union
- Trains with solders and be engaged in combat. In combat you deploy your
- troops and control there movement and strength. The operation of your
- troops is conducted in real time. When they encounter an enemy unit they
- will fight to the death. Ultimately you want to defeat all the combat
- units from the enemy train and collect coal and slaves from the defeated
- train as your booty.
-
- You will also encounter wild Mammoth herds, Wolf packs, and Mole Men.
- If you have cattle cars and sufficient men you can capture Mammoths. Both
- Wolves and Mole Men will attack you and your soldiers will need to defeat
- them. After defeating the Mole Men you can collect some slaves. Both
- Mammoths and slaves can be sold at certain cities. Mammoths and slaves are
- also useful in mining coal.
-
- Of course, to keep your train moving you will need to obtain coal to
- burn in its coal burning engine. This coal is called Lignite. Since coal
- in this frigid environment is the main source of heat, it is very valuable.
- Thus, money is based on another type of coal called Anthracite. This can
- also be used in the trains engine but is much less efficient. After
- starting the game you will be notified that a mine has been discovered.
- These mines will be the main source of Lignite and an additional source of
- Anthracite in addition to trade.
-
- You start the game with the engine, a coal carrying car, the boudoir
- (Private car), General quarters car, a carrier car, and a troop car with 10
- solders. Your initial objective is to conduct trade with cities and expand
- your train by adding additional cars. There are supposed to be up to 40
- different classes of cars that you can attach to your engine. In addition,
- your train can be up to 100 cars in length. Believe me you'll never be
- impressed with HO toy train sets again!
-
-
- The Mechanics There a four main screens from which you control the
- """"""""""""" operation of your train. The first screen that you see
- when starting is the map screen. In this mode the bottom 1/3 of the screen
- is the control panel. This is used to check the status of your train's
- cars, view the time, check the quantity of money and fuel, see your speed,
- stop and reverse the trains motion and switch to other modes. The control
- panel on the bottom of the screen is always available. The rest of the
- screen displays a close up map. On this map you can see the tracks,
- cities, tunnels and anything else that shows up from your observation car.
- Of course you will also see your train with an arrow indicating it's
- direction of travel. This map shows the junctions where tracks come
- together. Clicking on the junctions will switch the tracks that the train
- will travel on. You can also click on cities that you see and you will be
- given the name, coordinates and type of city. You can also see the tunnel
- entrances to the underground sections of track. Clicking on other
- locations displayed will show the coordinates of that location. This
- information is handy when aiming missiles.
-
- In the control panel there is an icon that you can click on which
- will show you the whole map at once. In this mode the tracks are lines.
- The underground tracks are dashed lines. Viking Union depots are shown as
- skulls. Flashing red dots also represent new mines. Moving the new
- magnifying glass pointer to an area of the map and clicking will
- automatically display that area close-up.
-
- After checking out the various map views, you will want to click on
- the engine icon. This will display a detail graphic image of the engine
- compartment. In this screen there are various objects displayed that you
- can click on to operate the train. Most importantly there are two guys
- with shovels that when you click on them will begin to shovel coal into the
- engine. The one on the right shovels lignite and the one on the left
- shovels anthracite. On the left there is a stoup which lights up when you
- have messages from the radio room or your spies. In the back there is also
- a light that indicates an alarm from the observation car. Both the Stoup
- and Alarm sound an audio alarm when a new event occurs. By the driver
- there is a wheel, lever and pull cord. Clicking the wheel changes the
- train's direction of travel. The lever is a brake that will stop the
- trains motion and the pull cord sounds the whistle. The last control is a
- panel that accesses the engine pop up control panel. This panel allows you
- to control the speed of the train. It also displays the current speed,
- steam pressure in Pistons, temperature in the boiler, and the pressure in
- the boiler.
-
- The first thing to do in the engine room is click on the man to start
- shoveling lignite. Keep this up until the temperature is about half way
- to max then move the speed knob and release the break. With traditional
- steam engine sounds, your train will begin to move.
-
- Clicking in the control panel on the boudoir icon will bring up the
- graphic of the boudoir car. If you click on the guy at the desk this will
- display an inventory of your train. Clicking on the book on the table will
- allow you to save the game. Finally, clicking on the revolver will allow
- you to commit suicide, ending the game.
-
- In the control panel there is also a icon representing the general
- quarters car. This also displays a detail graphic of the car. As in the
- other cars you can click on various parts of the picture to activate
- various operations. Clicking on the large map will put you in the overall
- map screen discussed earlier. Clicking on the radio operator will allow
- you to contact your spies. You can send spies to various locations, or
- cause an existing spy to sabotage a track or bridge. You can also click on
- the guy on the right side of the car to operate line inspection cars. You
- can send out line inspection cars to test the track ahead of your train.
- The inspection car will continue until it encounters a mine, or hits
- something. A second option is to send out a line inspection car with a
- missile. This is obviously a nice way to deal with enemy trains that might
- be in your way.
-
- The last train icon in the control panel is the missile launcher car.
- This icon isn't available until you buy a missile launcher car and
- missiles. This selection brings up a control panel that allows you to
- select the direction and distance your missile will be fired. After you've
- made your target selection and any final adjustments you can arm and launch
- the missile. If your aim is close the infra-red tracking on the missile
- will do the rest. Bye Bye one train!
-
-
- The Technical Details The game didn't have any bugs that I noticed. The
- """"""""""""""""""""" operation was flawless. The game is completely
- controlled with the mouse. The graphics in the game were outstanding. The
- best comparison for some of the graphics was the game Ishar. Clearly there
- were more than 16 colors displayed. The sound used in the game was also
- excellent. My daughter loved listening to the train when developing a good
- head of steam and sounding the whistle. All the sounds are digitized
- sounds that are very realistic.
-
- The documentation was a bit poor compared to most european games now
- days. The documentation was about 22 pages of English text. It describes
- the basics of operation and not much else. There are only black & white
- pictures and these are hand drawn representations of the graphics in game
- play. There could also have been more graphic representations of various
- aspects of the game. The documentation also didn't include any sort of
- tutorial, tactics guidelines or helpful hints.
-
-
- Summary All in all, Transarctica is an ok game. I wasn't particularly
- """"""" thrilled about the game because it was a bit confusing and hard
- to understand (partly due to the poor documentation). Most of the game
- controls in the various screens are not clearly identified in the screens.
- If you didn't know that they were there you'd be clicking the pointer at
- random. While the graphics are beautiful I'd have preferred some outlining
- on the objects that are controls. I also didn't like the real time control
- of combat units as I prefer a more strategic war game approach. I did like
- the adventure aspects of the game, the variety of train cars and cities to
- visit. Something about this game really reminded me of Ishar, probably the
- graphics, sound and fonts. I also felt some of the adventure aspects were
- similar. In that you received tasks and things to do via hints when you
- visited various different places or wandering traders.
-
- If you are looking for a game that is different from many of the
- games out today and you like a game with adventure elements, war games and
- trains you'll want to consider Transarctica.

- """"""""""""""""""""
- ~ For the Atari Lynx ~
-
-
- IN TODAY'S HECTIC WORLD In today's hectic world, driving is a large part
- """"""""""""""""""""""" of just about everyone's life. Which is why it
- always boggled my mind that people will go out and play a game that
- simulates driving -- to me, that would be like playing a game that
- simulates doing the dishes, or mowing the lawn. There are several flaws to
- driving games (in my opinion), especially on systems such as the Lynx, that
- do not have steering wheel controllers:
-
- o You typically can't check your mirrors. Sometimes you
- can't even check over your shoulder.
-
- o The other cars on the road drive even worse than those
- you encounter in "real life."
-
- o The experience is generally nothing at all like driving.
-
- And, of course, the obvious one:
-
- o You don't get to kill anything.
-
-
- Several months ago, a newly forming Lynx developer called Beyond Games
- put out a call for reviewers and Beta testers. Not being able to pass up
- an opportunity to see a game before you (the reader) sees it, I sent a
- response. The game they wanted to send out was BattleWheels -- I had the
- game in my hand within two days of GEmailing my request. The game involves
- driving -- as you know, not my favorite type of game -- but I figured I'd
- give it a shot.
-
- As it turns out, however, BattleWheels is a welcome exception to the
- "I hate driving games" rule. Largely because you do get to kill things.
- But also because the implementation of the driving controls is very well
- done, considering what they had to work with.
-
- To be honest, I was not very impressed at first. The manual briefly
- mentioned an "action mode," where you could jump right in with little
- instruction, and get right to playing the game. So I fired up the cart,
- got a graphically and musically average title page, and started looking at
- the options. You could set your number of opponents, whether or not you
- had a radar, how much money you started with, what area you'd be driving
- in, what color your car is, etc. You could even select from a group of
- characters to represent your driver. Fairly impressed by the number of
- options, I drove a short match, very short, and won in under a minute. My
- initial thought was "this could get old real quick."
-
- But then I turned back to the manual, and learned about the "custom
- mode." In this mode you can design your own car, based on how much money
- you have. It is in this area that the game really shines. You can have an
- engine and frame with varying degrees of quality. You can put any of five
- different weapon types on your car: Missiles and cannons in the front,
- cannons and flame throwers on the sides, and missiles, mines, flame
- throwers and ink blots in the rear. You can also put varying amounts of
- armor on the different sections of your car (front, sides, rear, and
- underbody). Designing a car is a good portion of the fun of this game.
-
- After you've designed your rush-hour dream car, you take it out on the
- field and start to experiment with your new toy. Switching weapons is
- easy, once you get the hang of it. Just hold the option-1 button and move
- the joypad in the direction of the weapon you want to use. Then press the
- A button and the weapon you've selected is fired. You keep using that
- weapon until you change again (or run out of ammunition).
-
- Unlike many driving games (and even drive-and-kill games such as
- RoadBlasters), you don't drive on a road in BattleWheels. Instead, you
- find yourself in a square-shaped arena, walled-in and filled with various
- obstacles. There are also money bags strewn about the playing area, that
- you can grab if you dare (you have to get out of your car and grab the
- money on foot, and then get back in your car). You will be driving against
- anywhere from one to five opponents. Since your opponents can be anywhere
- around you, you can check your radar (if that option is enabled) by holding
- down the B button. And you can check over your shoulders by holding down B
- and pressing the joypad in the direction you want to look.
-
- After not too much play time, I was able to figure out that the
- computer drivers will drive as intelligently (or unintelligently) as you
- do. It's pretty easy to end a match quickly by driving head-on into an
- opponent, and just opening fire until one of you dies -- this is how my
- first game ended so quickly. If you learn to drive in reverse, and use
- your rear and side weapons, the game become a lot more interesting.
-
- In time, you learn that a little alarm starts to go off when your car
- is about to explode. At this point, you can use Option-2 to jump out of
- your car. You are equipped with a hand-held machine gun (with unlimited
- ammo) and four missiles to try and survive. You can dive out of the way of
- cars by hitting Option-2 again. And, if an opponent jumps out of their car
- to grab some dough, you can get into their car and steal it! But the most
- fun of this aspect of the game is when you still have your car, and an
- opponent doesn't -- you can plow down your pedestrian pals and watch 'em go
- flying (ever see Robocop?) -- it's malicious, I know, but hey, it's a
- blast! (Digression: Despite numerous requests from myself and other beta
- testers, Beyond Games chose not to put any cats on the field for us to run
- over. Oh, well.)
-
- But BattleWheels doesn't reach the peak of its potential until you
- exploit its most valuable option -- it can be ComLynxed with up to six
- human players participating. Knowing that a review without a ComLynx test
- would be only partially complete, I requested another copy of BW from
- Beyond Games -- they happily obliged, and I grabbed a friend to test drive
- a multi-player game. Several hours later, I was hooked. This is easily
- the best multi-player competition game since Warbirds. I can't wait until
- the game is released so I can play six-player (I doubt Beyond Games would
- have sent me four more test carts)!
-
- All in all, BattleWheels is a must-have game for anyone who likes to
- kill (in fun, of course). It's a very good game, even when played
- single-player, but it really shines in ComLynx mode. BattleWheels from
- Beyond Games is well worth the $39.95 purchase price (suggested retail).

- """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
-
- SHUTTLE SPACE FLIGHT SIMULATOR This is an update to my earlier review a
- """""""""""""""""""""""""""""" few months ago on the Shuttle Space
- Flight Simulator for the ST family of computers including the STe. It runs
- on floppy exclusively but requires only 512K memory or above.
-
- After a couple of months waiting and tracking down the problem, my
- Space Shuttle upgrade finally arrived. Pulling down the "About Shuttle"
- menu revealed that the version number 1.0 hasn't changed. Another bit of
- sameness is the cheat - hold "a" and "l" keys together for unlocking
- missions is still there. They told me it would be changed. I speculate
- that this is really a "maintenance" release and not a version. Perhaps a
- version change is still in the works.
-
- Is there any easy way to tell if you have the fixed version? At first
- load-up, no. Once you start a mission however, click on the CRT #3 screen.
- You should see the "Spec 50" screen display depending on where you are in a
- mission. The numbers "0081" should be in the upper left. If not, hold
- down the Alternate key, press "clear" with the mouse on the screen keypad,
- and enter the following on the screen keypad: "SPEC" button, "5" button,
- "0" button, and then "PRO" button. The drive should access and the "SPEC
- 50" display appear. Look for an altitude numerical display in the upper
- left area. If you have a blank line, it's the old buggy version. There
- should be some numbers displayed there always.
-
- This is the major fix in the program. The CRT can now assist in
- guiding instrument landings. It works best when near or over the runway.
- If the shuttle is too far away, the landing graphic display will be off
- the screen. Unlike the other flight displays, this one can show which end
- of the runway you are over. The part of this display not fixed is that the
- two circles will be removed when the display rotates to the right of the
- screen. I don't know why they didn't bother to fix that. I consider this
- a half fix. Now that there is a true altimeter always available as part of
- the display, you can get an accurate altitude reading at all stages of the
- mission. The altimeter on the commander's and pilot's panels stops being
- accurate above 243,000 feet. The Spec 50 used to lock out the keyboard
- when activated during de-orbit prior to landing stage. This as been
- partially fixed. Lock-out will now be for a short time and normal function
- will resume. I still avoid this display during de-orbit. It's not needed
- until landing anyway.
-
- Another half fix is the GNC IMU CRT. It now displays XYZ coordinates
- associated with intercepting objects in orbit. I say half because it only
- displays coordinates sometimes and when the screen is activated, it
- rotates the shuttle in an arbitrary direction and moves the shuttle away
- from the object you are trying to intercept. This is an old bug that
- hasn't been addressed. As far as I'm concerned, useless.
-
- The space station assembly mission is still broken. The crew
- quarters can be assembled to the solar panel, but the solar panel will
- disappear as soon as assembled. Again, an old bug left laying around.
-
- The landing area now has a green border around it (same as the PC
- version) to make it easier to find at night.
-
- Another fix is the solidifying of the code. I've not had problems
- with bombs and crashes as before. The disk changes have been properly
- identified with dialogs to prevent confusion. A welcome addition.
-
- I've prepared a help file in the GEnie Information Service Atari ST
- library that will provide a tutorial for landing the Space Shuttle. You
- will find it by doing a search using the keywords "space shuttle".
-
- I now consider this program a solid investment and highly recommend
- it. The stunning graphics and detail will be more enjoyable now that the
- crashes are gone and most missions can be fulfilled as intended.

- >>> SHUTTLE SPACE FLIGHT SIMULATOR HELP <<<
- """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
- ~ Landing and de-orbit tutorial ~
-
-
- I've included a tutorial here using the corrected version of the game
- where the Spec 50 CRT screen now works better.
-
- There are four segments to interpret on the Spec 50 display.
-
- 1) Triangle. This is the shuttle's position in relation to the runway
- and always remains at the bottom center.
-
- 2) Large circle (Glide Down circle). Ideal position for beginning
- landing approach. The goal is for the shuttle triangle to stay
- inside this circle while turning and descending until final
- approach parameters are obtained. Also useful to identify which
- end of the runway to start your approach.
-
- 3) Small circle. Touch down point (roughly 1/3 in from start of
- runway.) Your approach should start near the large circle and
- touch down before or on the small circle. Mainly useful for early
- high altitude stage just after re-entry, to confirm your approach
- direction and orientation of the runway. Touch down beyond this
- point may not provide enough time to stop.
-
- 4) Thin line. TAEM alignment cylinder. This stretches between large
- and small circle. Final approach should start with point of
- shuttle triangle touching near end, close to 10,000 feet altitude,
- 340 knots speed. Touchdown should occur at or before far end of
- line.
-
- Objects 2,3,and 4 rotate around the screen.
-
-
- LANDING DIRECTIONS The directions provided to PC users of Shuttle from
- """""""""""""""""" Virgin Games US is the simplest and will land you in
- a few minutes quick and easy.
-
- As soon as you get the message confirming re-entry complete, make a
- right turn to 70 degrees and zero pitch. The Spec 50 and the HSI can
- assist you to obtain this. Your decent rate will be very high and events
- will happen fairly quickly. Maintain level wings. A quick look at the
- external view will confirm you are heading in the general direction of the
- landing area to pass slightly south of it. If you are landing at
- Canaveral, approach may begin North of it when simulation start is set to
- landing practice.
-
- When you get near the landing area, the figures 2,3,and 4 mentioned
- above will slide down the left side ( or right ) of the Spec 50 from top to
- bottom. As soon as the complete display is on the screen and nearly even
- with the shuttle symbol, turn the shuttle left to aim for the Glide Down
- Circle (figure 2). If your approach is from the north, you may just enter
- a circle here if you are now near the alignment cylinder. Make note the
- glide circle's position in relation to the cylinder line. The circle may
- disappear as you get close. If this happens, just enter the area where it
- was and circle several times in a tight turn until your altitude is between
- 25 and 35 thousand feet. Pull out of the turn pointing straight at the
- runway with the center of the HUD aimed at the near end of the runway.
-
- The idea behind the glide-down circle being offset is that with proper
- timing, you are able to exit aligned to the runway from the opposite side
- you entered, and have to make very little course adjustment. With that in
- mind, I enter it from the south beginning my turn on the outside opposite
- the alignment cylinder and turn left 40 degrees, maintaining until altitude
- is correct.
-
- Speed is not important at high altitude. You can deploy data probes
- any time you like if you want to use them. I don't start breaking until I
- get below 70,000 feet. EAS knots indicator doesn't show true speed until
- altitude is below 65,000 feet. Adjust speedbreak ( + and - keys ) so you
- will not be over 340 knots when you reach the start of the cylinder line.
- Use HSI and yaw keys ( , . ) to correct your alignment. Keep in mind that
- the HSI will direct you slightly left of the runway when you are very
- close. Within 10,000 feet, it's best to do final adjustments visually.
-
- When arriving out of re-entry where the altitude will be over 200,000
- rather than 140,000 you get during landing practice, fly toward runway with
- slight up pitch to provide lots of flight time (I use 10 degrees to start.)
- When the glide circle is even with the shuttle symbol on the spec 50 to the
- left, fly toward right or outside of the large circle. Now the idea is to
- loose lots of altitude and stay in a favorable position for final. I make
- a tight symmetrical turn inside the circle and adjust pitch to lose
- altitude at the rate I wish.
-
- Between 25 and 35,000 feet, leave the circle and head straight south
- with the runway ahead. A 10 degree down pitch is typical here. Keep speed
- close to 340 knots.
-
- The goal now is to position for a straight on approach. The HSI has
- more resolution and accuracy for this and it's easy to move between the HUD
- and Commander's panel by pressing F1 and F2. The shuttle is in the best
- position for final approach when there is a long yellow line directly
- through the aircraft symbol in the HSI, and intersects with a small yellow
- line drawn directly underneath the "S" (south) compass marker. If the long
- lellow line is to the right of the aircraft symbol, you are right of the
- runway. This works the same if you are flying in any other direction. The
- HSI will not tell you if you are North or South of the runway, only your
- present heading, whether you are East or West of the runway, have proper
- horizontal angle, and what direction you need to fly to intercept once you
- are North of it with margin to maneuver.
-
- Think of the small yellow underline as the direction to the runway
- under proper approach conditions, the long yellow line as the desired
- glidepath during approach, the rotating compass letters as your current
- heading (at the top,) and center aircraft symbol as your current position
- in relation to the glidepath. Like the Spec 50 shuttle symbol, the HSI
- Shuttle symbol will remain frozen in the center.
-
- Again, when everything is correct, the compass "S" will be at the top
- and slightly to the left, with a small green underline beneath it, and a
- long green line drawn through the center aircraft symbol directly between
- the S and N.
-
- The HSI does not indicate descent rate.
-
- I've often wished there was a descent rate indicator somewhere in the
- simulator. The lack of one makes for very seat-of-the-pants flying.
- Proper altitude at any point has to be judged visually and will take some
- practice. There ARE two in the simulation. One on the HSI which isn't
- functional, and one on the HUD that moves with no meaning. Too bad.
-
- Another glance at the "Spec 50" CRT will confirm your heading is
- something near 171 degrees. As the point of the shuttle triangle touches
- the near end of the cylinder line, speed should be near 340 knots and 10 to
- 12,000 feet altitude. Ideal position for first pre-flair is at 2,000 feet,
- and point of shuttle triangle is near end of cylinder line on the CRT. If
- over 340 knots in speed, use this flair with speedbreak to reduce to 330
- knots. Looking out the HUD, center of the display should line up perfectly
- with the end of the runway. This close, the HSI will show you slightly to
- one side.
-
- Pitch up until the small arrows at the bottom of the HUD are even with
- the horizon, continue to correct alignment with the field, and hold until
- the speed drops close to 330 knots.
-
- Arm landing gear. Proper keypress (not explained correctly in the
- manual) is hold Control and hold "G". When menu prompt appears, continue
- holding Control and press "A". If you let go and press "A", the gear WILL
- arm, but you'll have to press the "F" key to inform the program you are
- still using FORWARD flight controls (ALT-A is interpreted by the keyboard
- parser as Arm Landing Gear and Aft Controls although the Forward controls
- remain in effect.) Should you start another mission without dumping the
- program, the shuttle WILL BE IN AFT CONTROL MODE although you don't
- remember doing that. Point the nose down at the runway and adjust break to
- keep speed over 300 knots and under 350. Typically, I remove break at this
- point.
-
- At 1,000 feet, perform final flare same as above and lower landing
- gear Stall is around 190 knots. Use yaw buttons for fine alignment
- adjustments. The AVVI "Alt Rate" should show 10 ft/second or less during
- last 200 feet. Too much pitch at any speed here will produce a stall
- crash.
-
- Adjust break and pitch if necessary. On touchdown, apply full break.
- Yaw can still be used to keep centered on the runway. The "W" key for
- applying wheelbreaks is mentioned in the Mission Guide page 10 and nowhere
- else. I get the impression breaking happens faster while held down, but
- have not been able to confirm that.
-
-
- RE-ENTRY DIRECTIONS Re-entry begins when you get the message that the
- """"""""""""""""""" de-orbit burn is complete and the shuttle has
- automatically turned 180 degrees to place the nose in the direction of
- travel. I pause the program here and adjust the external view behind and
- above the shuttle looking in the direction of travel and rotate so the
- curvature of the earth and the shuttle is as close to parallel with the
- bottom of the screen as possible. I use this as a reference if I get
- confused or I need reassurance during erroneous instrument displays. I
- also press the ATT REF on the commander's console to log my present
- orientation for future reference.
-
- The re-entry error margin has been increased so that proper pitch will
- not result in burn-up. Correct the pitch using the ADI in LVLH mode (ADI
- Attitude switch.) Use pitch controls to obtain a display where the bottom
- of the small dip in the white center line fixed across the center of the
- display, is above the black horizon ( earth ) half way between the first
- and second row of horizontal dots in the white area. Each row of dots
- represents 22.5 degrees pitch. This will provide a pitch around 30 - 32
- degrees. Required range is between 28 and 38. Proper pitch is checked at
- two places during this sequence. At 425,000 feet (70 on the AVVI altitude
- indicator) where you will get the message that you have entered re-entry
- interface, and at 207,000 feet (207 on the AVVI) where you will get the
- message that re-entry is complete and you start the landing approach to the
- runway. You can have a lot of error at most times as long as you are able
- to correct close to the crucial times. Do not use the Spec 50 display
- during this phase as it will temporarily disable rotational controls.
-
- Severe roll error will make the display hard to interpret. I find it
- very useful to set all the Orbital DAP *ROTATION* controls to *PULSE* and
- RCS JETS to VERN. This will provide fine control where it would take 4 to
- 8 key presses to start motion from a still orientation rather than 1 or 2
- as would happen in NORM mode. I can counter a number of key presses with
- equal numbers of opposite presses to maintain accurate control. Math
- errors will cause the ADI to jump suddenly at times although the shuttle
- hasn't changed much. Don't react to these, just give the ADI time to
- settle into the proper indication (about 10 to 30 seconds.) Use the time
- before heat interface (occurs at 425,000 feet, 70 on the AVVI) to perfect
- attitude. You have lots of time, but avoid time skips of more than a
- minute because large errors can occur and leave you with too little time to
- make the delicate corrections.
-
- At 207,000 feet, interface will end and landing begin. The sky will
- have brightened and the AVVI Altitude indicator having slowly decreased
- toward a reading of 40 will suddenly jump to 243 (now reading accurately)
- and quickly down to 207 and below. If you have been struggling to get
- level wings and proper pitch, you have less than a minute left.
-
- Further fine tuning can be achieved for pilots demanding perfection by
- placing the commander's ADI Attitude switch to REF. The error needles on
- the top, side, and bottom of the ADI will now move to display directional
- motion since the ATT REF button was pressed. Press this button as many
- times as needed to keep the indicators within the error rate you have
- selected with the ADI RATE switches. You can now see motion that would not
- show up on the ADI until there was cumulative error. Zero motion is
- impossible, but you can reach a point where very little correction is
- necessary. Switch ADI Attitude back to LVLH and make a couple key presses
- when large error shows up.
-
- Avoid over-compensation. Press a rotational fire control a few times
- and wait until you see a motion update on the display to judge the effect
- of your control. This may take 10 seconds to a minute. Keep track of the
- number of times you have pressed the control so you can compensate with the
- proper number to correct.
-
- Never correct more than one rotation axis at a time. When the axis
- you are working on has stabilized so substantial errors stop occuring for
- up to 30 seconds or more, switch to another axis and perfect that before
- moving on. You will find that corrections of yaw are rarely needed or will
- need only one small correction the whole flight just to stop an initial
- drift. Never activate the TRANSLATION controls during this time. Use the
- CURSOR keys for pitch and roll NOT the joystick. Thrust or speedbreak
- controls are not needed.
-
- This should help budding pilots with re-entry and landings. Make sure
- you save your position to disk just after closing the doors in preparation
- for de-orbit.
-
-
- GENERAL TIPS During game set-up, set the time advance to 10 minutes and
- """""""""""" 1 minute display rate. Most events are nearly 10 minutes
- or less apart. 1 minute updates on the screen will let you see relatively
- frequent scene changes without slowing the program too much. Just press
- "T" to activate. If you are paused, press pause to begin advance. At any
- time, you can interrupt advance by holding down "T" again. This "feature"
- is not documented.
-
- Time Skip may be hard to understand because it changes based on the
- mission timer. Set the "Advance to" number to where you want the
- simulation to stop based on the mission clock. On the launch pad at T -5
- hours, you might want to set it to 4 minutes with the minus circle
- selected. All mission events will be performed automatically, and if you
- selected "P" for pause at end of skip, mission time will be paused there
- ready for you to resume and complete manually. I go eat lunch, watch a TV
- show or something come back at any time and it's ready to go.
-
- The mission timer restarts at several times during a mission.
-
- 1) Launch - Resets to zero and counts up as plus time instead of
- minus.
-
- 2) Mission comms - Reset to zero and counts up or down as plus
- time depending on mission.
-
- 3) Landing comms - Reset to zero and counts up as plus time until
- re-entry is complete.
-
- 4) Landing phase - Interface has ended and shuttle is near runway
- at high altitude preparing for final approach. Counts up as plus
- time.
-
- All orbit preparations end by + 56 minutes.
-
- These are important to remember as you try to set the timer. Use
- Mission guide to help you find times near where you want to be actively
- involved.
-
- You can also interrupt Skip by holding down the "T" key. Again, not
- documented.
-
-
- Problem Checklist
- """""""""""""""""
- No Radar Altimeter - You will find the switches to turn them on to the
- right of the TACAN 1,2,3 switches on the overhead [08]. Will not work
- above 10,000 feet.
-
- Takes too long for de-orbit burn. To get an idea when it's coming up,
- select the external view and rotate so you are looking straight down at the
- Earth. Use the zoom out "-" key and hold it down until you can see nearly
- the whole earth and the zoom stops. If you can recognize the land forms,
- watch for the shuttle to pass across the Suez canal, tip of India, and
- across Indian ocean. You will pass across the bottom of Australia. Close
- to the middle, de-orbit burn will begin. From there, you will swing north
- across Solomons and Hawaii, to pass over the US west coast as the sky
- brightens. This is a fun way to time skip and sight see. Because the
- shuttle is always slowly rotating during orbit, you'll have to hold down
- the keypad "0" or "." keys to rotate the view to a useful setting.
-
- Although the manual states that help levels cannot be decreased to a
- lower level once play has begun, I've found this not true. You can set
- them up and down at will. I like to use the Veteran or Full Manual
- settings when I don't want the screens to to jump around.
-
- There is a feature in the Control-P menu to change the distance the
- screen jumps when scrolling through connected screens. Change this only
- once. Changing back again will crash the program.
-
- To scroll through all the CRT screens on the rear CRT #4, use the
- keypad + and - keys.

-
-
- TURBO-ALADDIN! One complaint that I have received over and over
- """""""""""""" again from GEnieLamp readers was about getting
- GEnieLamp via the slow, error-prone method of listing/capturing the
- magazine. Well, we have come up with a solution that I think you'll
- love. Now, instead of capturing the issue, you can download the
- Lamp just like you would any other file found here on GEnie.
-
- But we didn't stop there. Jim Lubin has come up with a new
- Get_The_Lamp script that will download one or more of the GEnieLamp
- issues off of page 515. Simple!
-
-
- What Does It Do? When executed from within Aladdin, the Get_The_Lamp
- """""""""""""""" script will log on to GEnie, go to page 515 and download
- the issue(s) automatically. After doing so, the script will then either 1)
- Log off (depending on your "Stay" status in Aladdin) or move to a
- GEnie*Basic page.
-
- The Get_The_Lamp script has an option which will allow you to
- get the magazine(s) at a preset time. You also have the option of
- doing an autopass 1 or autopass 2 if you like.
-
- Sound good? Just "cut out" the script below and follow the
- installation procedures found at the end of this article. Any
- problems, comments or whatever, send GE Mail to GENIELAMP or

- >>> HOW TO ADD THIS SCRIPT TO ALADDIN <<<
- """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
-
- Installing The Script First of all, you will need to separate this
- """"""""""""""""""""" script from the magazine. To do this, just load
- this magazine into any word processor or text editor, and cut or block this
- script file out to it's own separate file and save it as LAMP02.SCR. (Our
- thanks to Ed Perrone, Sysop, Astrology RT for these quicky instructions.)
-
- Aladdin IBM Before you can use this script, you must add it to Aladdin.
- """"""""""" You only need to do this once, and then the script will be
- available every time you run Aladdin. Use the following procedure:
-
- 1. Copy LAMP02.SCR into the Aladdin directory on your computer.
-
- 2. Start Aladdin.
-
- 3. At Aladdin's Main Menu, on the bottom right-hand side of the
- screen, you'll see a listing of scripts already contained in
- Aladdin. The scripts will be numbered from 3 through 9.
-
- 4. Select a script number into which you will load this script. If
- you have empty slots in the script listing, use one of them. If
- all the slots already contain scripts, you'll have to delete one
- of them before you can add this one. (If you have version 1.0 of
- this script, delete it and replace it with this new version.)
-
- 5. Jot down the script number you've selected so you don't forget it.
-
- 6. Press F7 to enter Aladdin's script editor. The listing of scripts
- will now be on the upper right of your screen.
-
- 7. If you need to delete an existing script to make room for this
- one, press D. Then press the number of the script you wish to
- delete. Aladdin will delete the script. (If you don't need to
- delete an existing script, then skip this step.)
-
- 8. To add the new script to Aladdin, press A. Aladdin will place you
- into the script editing window and display a "skeleton" new
- script.
-
- 9. Press CTRL-Y several times to delete all the text that's displayed
- in the editing window.
-
- 10. Press CTRL-K (Aladdin will beep), then press R. A dialog box
- will open requesting a file name. Type LAMP02.SCR, then press
- <ENTER>. Aladdin will read the script file into the editor.
-
- 11. Press CTRL-PgUp to move to the beginning of the script.
-
- 12. The first line of the script will read, "Script # Get_The_Lamp!"
- Replace the "#" with the script number you'll be using (the
- number you jotted down in step 5). THIS STEP IS IMPORTANT!
-
- 13. Now press <ESC> to save the script. When Aladdin finishes saving
- the script, you'll be back at the script editor menu. Press
- <ESC> again to return to the Aladdin's Main Menu. The new script
- should now be listed in your list of Aladdin scripts -- and it's
- ready to run!
