- Antonio dos Santos Ramalho Eanes, b. Jan. 25, 1935, was
- president of !PORTUGAL!Portugal~ from 1976 to 1986. An army officer, he
- fought in the colonial wars in Africa. After the revolution of
- Apr. 25, 1974, he headed the Portuguese Television network and
- became army chief of staff in December 1975. On June 27, 1976,
- Gen. Eanes was elected president of the republic. A nonparty
- candidate supported by the Socialists, Popular Democrats, and
- Social Democrats, he won 61.5 percent of the vote. He was
- reelected on Dec. 7, 1980, with 56.4 percent of the vote.
- Legally barred from a third term, he was succeeded in 1986 by
- his former prime minister Mario Soares.
