  1. Antonio dos Santos Ramalho Eanes, b. Jan. 25, 1935, was                
  2. president of !PORTUGAL!Portugal~ from 1976 to 1986. An army officer, he           
  3. fought in the colonial wars in Africa. After the revolution of         
  4. Apr. 25, 1974, he headed the Portuguese Television network and         
  5. became army chief of staff in December 1975. On June 27, 1976,         
  6. Gen. Eanes was elected president of the republic. A nonparty           
  7. candidate supported by the Socialists, Popular Democrats, and          
  8. Social Democrats, he won 61.5 percent of the vote. He was              
  9. reelected on Dec. 7, 1980, with 56.4 percent of the vote.              
  10. Legally barred from a third term, he was succeeded in 1986 by          
  11. his former prime minister Mario Soares.
