- Hard disk utilities instructions:
-
- I make no claim to have written any of these programs. They're public domain
- utilities that I've found on various BBS's. However, I can say that they
- all seem to work pretty well on my SH-204, and that they seem to work
- together well. Each of the ARC files in this archive has its own
- instructions, but here are a few tips from experience, good and bad, that
- I picked up along the way.
-
- BOOTHARD.ARC:
- Casper Jensen's hard disk boot utility is a program that you should only
- have to load once. It modifies your ST-204 so that whether or
- not you've got a disk in the floppy drive the ST will attempt to boot
- from drive C. One thing I've noticed about this is that because the
- system boots from C, you have to turn off your hard drive and reboot
- in order to load some copy protected programs--for instance GameStar's
- Two-on-Two basketball. But that's a small price to pay to boot from your
- hard disk and get access to all the other great utilities in this archive.
-
- HARDGDOS.ARC:
- Ric Clayton's utility lets you boot GDOS off a hard disk. His instructions
- assume that you'll be booting your system from a floppy, but I've added
- information on how to do it from your hard disk. Add HGDOS.PRG to your
- C:\AUTO folder and set up a GDOS directory on your hard disk, per Ric's
- instructions. Works with both Easy Draw and Degas Elite. NOTE:
- HGDOS.PRG must be the first item in your C:\AUTO file if you want it to work.
-
-
-
- MEDREZ.ARC:
- Jim Wilson's utility will boot color systems in Medium resolution, so that
- all subsequent programs in your C:\AUTO file come up in medium rez. It
- makes several of the other programs in this archive much more readable.
- Put it second in your auto folder, right after HGDOS.
-
-
- BICLOCK.PRG:
- Public domain software from Batteries Included. Put this in your C:\AUTO
- file and it will prompt you to enter the time and date every time you
- boot up. Eliminates having to use the Control Panel.
-
- FOLDFIX.ARC:
- Konrad Hahn's utility fixes the 40 folder "bug" in GEM, allowing you to
- create up to 1000 folders on your hard disk. The first version he
- uploaded didn't work. This one does. Even if you don't use any other
- utilities in this archive I'm sure you'll find this one essential.
- However, there is one thing you must remember in using it--since
- failure to do so will probably result in your having to reformat your
- 40 folder limit. That is, you must load GEMBOOT.PRG every time you
- boot your hard disk. Never, never delete it or otherwise lose it
- (see instructtions for ACCEL06). I have GEMBOOT.PRG and GEMBOOT.INF as
- the next to last and last items in my C:\AUTO file, and since it works I
- suggest you do the same.
-
-
- ACCEL06.ARC:
- R. Legault's utility is a lifesave if you're like me and collect accessory
- files by the dozen. It lets you select which accessories and which files
- in the C:\AUTO folder will load when you boot your ST. It must be placed
- in the root (C:\) directory of your hard disk. The ability to select which
- files in the AUTO folder boot is nice because it lets you decide, for
- instance, whether or not you want to load GDOS by selecting or deselecting
- HGDOS.PRG. I've found that some accessories don't work properly with
- GDOS in memory, so this lets you pick and choose. Two things to remember
- with this one. One, don' select accessories than the ST can load at once,
- and remember that some (such as CONTROL.ACC) count as two accessories.
- Failure to remember this will result in bad things happening when you
- try to boot from the hard disk. Two, if you've exceeded the 40 folder limit
- make sure that GEMBOOT.PRG is always selected when you run ACCEL06.
- Otherwise, even worse things could happen.
-
- SPOOL.ARC:
- Steve Rollins' utility creates a 32k print spooler. Put it in your AUTO
- folder.
-
- That's all. Enjoy them. Despite the warnings, each of these programs
- works, and together they make your ST hard disk a much more useful
- piece of equipment. The warnings are given only to alert you to risks
- that you can avoid if you're careful. Of course, the best way to be
- careful is to use a hard disk backup program regularly. I recommend that
- you do so.
