  1. CatScan a Archive Cataloging Program
  2. ====================================

  4. If you're alot like me, you have anywhere from 20 to 50 disks of Arc'ed
  5. files.  Archiving has to be the greatest thing to hit computers since the
  6. invention of the floppy disk. The only trouble with Arc'ed files is you
  7. either have to take them apart (DeARC) or list them one by one when you
  8. want to find a certain file.  Sure you know the file you're looking for is
  9. in an Archive called DATABASE.ARC, but which one? And on which disk?
  10.  
  11. Enter the solution, CatScan from GrimWare, a filing system designed to take
  12. the hassel out of cataloging your Archives.
  13.  
  14. How to Use CatScan
  15. ==================
  16.  
  17. First thing you want to do is to make sure that your disks have a volume name
  18. on them, this makes finding which disk is what a lot easier.  What I do is
  19. give them the volume name ARCHIVE.???.  Starting with ARCHIVE.001 and
  20. incrementing each successive disk.
  21.  
  22. Load up the program called CatScan. Insert the disk to be cataloged.
  23. Pull down the "Read" item on the menu and click on "Whole Disk".
  24.  
  25. That was easy, insert the next disk and repeat this.
  26.  
  27. Now you'll probably want to check this Cataloge out, pull down the "Scan" item
  28. click on "Search File".  Now to find the file you're looking for, fill in the 
  29. filespec on the line ( It will accept any legal TOS file wild cards ) and
  30. click on "EXIT".  The file you're looking for if it is in the cataloge will
  31. appear on what should look like a 3 by 5 inch file card, neat huh?

  33. You'll notice that there is a comment line near the bottom of the file card,
  34. this can be filled in by clicking on the edit button.  It will accept up to
  35. 40 characters of comment.  If you fill in all the comments of every card you
  36. will be able to find a file by useing the "Search String" command on the menu
  37. bar.  One word of note, the "Search String" function is case sensitive, that is
  38. to say "BACK UP" is not the same as "back up".
  39.  
  40. Future Expandtion
  41. =================

  43. 1) The ablity to call another program from inside this program. So you could,
  44.    after having found the file you're looking for, call your favorite ARC
  45.    program and extract the file.
  46.  
  47. 2) A merge function to merge cataloges.
  48.  
  49. 3) A compression routine to compress the cataloge so it takes less space on
  50.    the disk.
  51.  
  52. 4) Functions to enhance the performance of the program as suggested by
  53.    users.
