  11.      Thanks for taking the time to try out the latest BBS program 
  12. for your Atari ST computer.  Transcendence is a full featured 
  13. bulletin board package.  It has almost every feature a systems 
  14. operator could need.  The program was designed to be as flexible 
  15. as possible, user friendly, and powerful.

  19.      This program is *Shareware*.  That is, you may copy it for 
  20. friends, transmit it to electronic services, or distribute it 
  21. though a public library.  You may not charge anything for the 
  22. software (Other than a reasonable shipping cost [$5 or less]).  
  23. You may not add, delete or alter any of the files inside of this 
  24. archive before distributing it.  If you do copy it for another 
  25. person, you must copy the original package with its original 
  26. contents.
  27.      The authors of this program have made every attempt to make 
  28. this program as bug-free as possible.  We advise you to use this 
  29. software at your own risk, we can in no way be responsible for 
  30. loss of data, or damage to your hardware caused from this

  33. HISTORY
  34.  
  35.      Transcendence was originally started by David Brown, in 1988.
  36. Last year Wayne Watson began working on the program.  Wayne is 
  37. responsible for the file area interface, the systems editor, the 
  38. external protocols, and many other miscellaneous areas.
  39.      Most of the features in this program were suggested from 
  40. sysops around the world.  Unlike most of the other BBS programs on 
  41. the ST platform, Transcendence has many features previously only 
  42. seen in the IBM market.
  43.      The goal was to create a program that the sysop could modify 
  44. in any way he or she wanted.  Thus, you can change the way the BBS 
  45. looks almost totally.  Unlike other BBS programs for the ST a new 
  46. user may not always know exactly what software you are running, 
  47. you can totally change the way the BBS looks and acts.  You can 
  48. add external mods, support almost any terminal emulation, and so 
  49. on.

  51. LIMITATIONS
  52.  
  53.      Since this is a *SHAREWARE* program, there are some 
  54. restrictions.  If you decide you want to use this software, you 
  55. may register your copy for $49.95.  After you register you will 
  56. receive a special file that will make your BBS full-functioning.  
  57. The shareware version has the following limitations:
  58.  
  59. o Only 5 message bases and file areas can be used.
  60. o The BBS will only access one partition per data type.
  61. o The program limits you to three batch downloads or uploads. 
  62. o A shareware notice is displayed at each "boot up."
  63.  
  64. NOTE: There may be other restrictions added since the creation
  65.       of this file.

  67.      You can run an actual BBS with the "Demo" version.  You can 
  68. even create more than 5 message bases and file areas.  The system 
  69. editor has no restrictions, only the actual BBS program.  If you 
  70. were to create, say, 20 message bases--You could access them all 
  71. after registering your copy.  You don't have to re-initialize your 
  72. BBS.

  74. RUNNING TRANSCENDENCE
  75.  
  76.      You should have received a large LZH file, containing this 
  77. file and many others.  The file was compressed with folders 
  78. intact.  The archiver you used to decompress it should have 
  79. created all of the folders for you.  If not use LHARC v2.01k or 
  80. higher.

  82.      This "demo" version was created to work with a hard drive, on 
  83. partition 'D'.  Don't worry if you can't install it on drive 'D', 
  84. there are instructions of installing it on other drives below.
  85.      After decompressing the demo, you should find a folder named 
  86. TRANSBBS in your root directory.  It should also have created 
  87. other folders inside of that.  The following is a list of folders:
  88.  
  89. TRANSBBS            - The main BBS folder
  90.         DATA        - BBS 'Data' files
  91.         TEXT        - Text & menu files
  92.         MESSAGE     - Message Base Data
  93.         FILES       - File Area Folders & Data
  94.         MODULES     - Modules (External programs)
  95.         BACKUP      - Storage of backup files
  96.         TEMP        - Temporary files
  97.         FMAIL       - Storage of files attached to msgs/email

  99.      All you need to do is make sure that the TRANSBBS folder is 
  100. in the root directory of drive 'D' and then run the TRANSBBS.PRG 
  101. file.  If you can not install the BBS program on drive 'D' go 
  102. ahead and extract the files & folders to the drive you want to 
  103. use.  Next run the SYS_EDIT.PRG file.  It will say lit can't find 
  104. a few files, and after the select the drop-down menu "Drives & 
  105. Paths."  You will see a list of Drives, and path names.  Change 
  106. the drive names to the drive you are using.  After you are done 
  107. select the "DONE" box.  Then exit the program, and tell it to SAVE 
  108. the TRANS.DAT file.

  110. AFTER YOU RUN THE BBS
  111.  
  112.      You will be at a menu with a few options.  Select option 'A' 
  113. (Logon as User #1).  This will log you, the Sysop, onto the BBS.  
  114. You will notice you have mail waiting, go ahead and read it now.  
  115. When done reading your mail select "K" to kill it.  After you have 
  116. read your mail you may want to change some of the information 
  117. about yourself (I doubt your name is John Doe).  To do this you 
  118. will use the built-in User-Editor.  To access it press F3 
  119. (Function key #3).  At the menu select "O" for online user.  You 
  120. may now alter your account any way you like.

  122.      There is a whole lot to this BBS program, but due to the 
  123. large size of this archive we are not going to go into any detail 
  124. on features, etc.  For more information call, or write
