- WRITE.ARC should contain the following files:
-
- WRITE.TTP - The Editor Program
- WRITE.DOC - This file, Documentation
- WRITE.HLP - Online Help File
- README.XXX - The README file for this version (ver. XXX)
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- I won't go into any unnecessary detail about how WRITE! functions since
- those of you using BBS Express! are perfectly familiar with the built-in
- editor. WRITE! functions almost exactly like the message/file editor you
- have come to know and tolerate. WRITE! handles both Local and online
- modes with built-in 'Time-Out' and Carrier Loss Detection. Local/Online
- modes are automatic, and require no additional command line parameters.
- WRITE! even has a chat-mode (F10).
-
- Unlike the editor in Express!, however, WRITE! is callable from a script
- file. Calling WRITE! with no command line parameters will cause WRITE! to
- prompt you for a file name. You will NOT have to use CHAINER or similar
- 'command passing software'. If the specified file is not found, it will
- ask if you wish to create a new file.
-
- The syntax in an Express! Script file is as follows:
-
- TOS ('[PATH]WRITE.PRG','[PATH][FILENAME]')
-
- such as: TOS ('C:\WRITE.PRG','C:\TEXT\SAMPLE.TXT')
-
- Otherwise, you may call WRITE! from the command line:
-
- TOS WRITE.TTP
-
- WRITE! will prompt you for a filename.
-
- (Note: You cannot use a filename on the command line if you TOS from
- Express! command mode since Express! will not pass any command line
- parameters unless it is run from script.)
-
- WRITE.TTP must be in your current working directory, OR you must path to
- the directory it is in. For example, TOS \WRITE\WRITE.TTP [PATH][FILENAME]
-
- The '/' access the functions; a '/?' accesses the WRITE.HLP file (which
- you can edit as you please). WRITE! will first look for a WRITE.HLP file
- in the current directory; if it is not found, it will look in the ROOT
- directory.
-
- WRITE! has a few other distinct differences from the Express! editor. For
- one, you can edit files up to 999 lines long. Secondly, to allow for the
- longer files, we have had to shorten the editable line length to 76. You
- can, however, display lines up to 100 chars long, though editing those
- lines will cause truncation. For most files, such as long script files,
- this should not cause a problem.
-
- WRITE! did not take very long to create and is only a small part of a much
- larger project. DRAGON KEEP is currently in the process of creating a new
- File Area program, dubbed The LIBRIUMS, to replace the somewhat lacking
- UL/DL section of BBS Express!. One of the needed routines was clearly an
- editor that worked exactly like Express! for the creation and editing of
- file descriptions. Since we wrote that routine first, and many Sysops
- have asked for just such a program to integrate into their own projects,
- we decided to release it as a stand-alone editor. WRITE! and the LIBRIUMS
- are being written in LASER C.
-
- ------------------------------
-
- We like using BBS Express!, and feel that its script language sets it
- apart from other systems such as FOREM. With a better UL/DL area, and the
- many new Echo-Mail type programs being released for Express!, it is our
- hope that Express! can survive as the most customizable and friendly BBS
- system available for the ST.
-
- The NEW file system, THE LIBRIUMS, will have all of the current Express
- features, plus additions, including:
-
- * Much improved file description heading, such as:
- - Date of last Download
- - Times Downloaded
- - File Type
- - Indicate if you have ever downloaded the file and when you did
-
- * Improved 'one-liner' browse information; part of the longer dscription
- will be displayed.
-
- * Y-Modem and Z-Modem Batch - this is a biggy!
-
- * Batch marking of files for later download. Both in oneliner and full
- description modes.
-
- * Much improved Sysop functions, including the ability to MOVE files
- from one area to another.
-
- * Ongoing statistical analysis of what files are being downloaded and by
- who. These 'reports' can be accessed by users.
-
- * Can create 'Download Only' areas
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Our goal for Beta testing is still several months away. All those
- involved have very heavy work loads and development occurs primarily on
- weekends. Once Beta testing on several BBS's is complete, a 'demo'
- version will be publically available. It will be full functioning except
- for the number of allowable file areas. It will be distributed on that
- ole 'Shareware' concept, with a registration fee for full functionality.
- It will NOT be expensive.
-
- As for WRITE!, you are free to distribute and use this program without any
- fee whatsoever, as long as you do so without adulterations of any kind. If
- you would like, however, a small contribution would be readily accepted,
- and will be deducted from the price of the LIBRIUMS should you choose to
- later buy it.
-
- However, should you decide to integrate WRITE! into your own systems and
- offer it for sale, a fee is ABSOLUTELY MANDITORY! While we're nice guys,
- the very notion of someone making money from something we distribute
- freely makes us ill, and we will prosecute. If this IS something you
- would like to do, give us a call a DRAGON KEEP (904-375-3500) and we can
- arrange something agreeable to both of us. (Note: we DON'T mind if you
- distribute WRITE! along with another PUBLIC DOMAIN packages).
-
- Contributions can be sent to:
-
- THE DRAGON
- P.O. Box 12077
- Gainesville, FL 32604-0077
-
- Make checks or money orders payable to THE DRAGON (Yes, THE DRAGON).
-
- We hope you like this small program as much as we do. Any conmments or
- suggestions for WRITE! or the LIBRIUMS can referred to either CEREBUS or
- LORIC of DRAGON KEEP. You can also speak with The DRAGON - but you do so
- at your own risk!
-
-
- May your adventurers be paved in gold,
- Cerebus, The Watcher
