  7. See ParentÆs Guide for help on installation, optimizing performance,
  8. and addressing memory, sound and display problems.  Below are some 
  9. additional tips not mentioned in the ParentsÆ Guide.

  11. TOY CONTROLS
  12. If at any point, the software stops responding to the toy controls 
  13. or responds incorrectly to the toy controls, unplug the toy from 
  14. the y-cable and then plug it back in. (DO NOT UNPLUG THE Y-CABLE 
  15. FROM THE BACK OF YOUR COMPUTER WITHOUT SHUTTING DOWN FIRST).  If 
  16. this does not solve the problem, reboot your machine.
  17.  
  18. USING THE FINGER MOUSE WHEN LAUNCH & LEARN IS NOT RUNNING
  19. You will notice that the Wonder Tools Keyboard finger mouse does 
  20. not work when Launch & Learn is not running.  We have included a 
  21. program on the Launch & Learn CD-ROM which allows the finger mouse
  22. to work at all times.  If  you want to run this, follow these steps:
  23. Windows '95
  24.     1. On your CD-ROM, find WTEnable.exe located in Support\Win 95.
  25.     2. Copy WTEnable.exe to your hard drive.
  26.     3. Double-click on WTEnable.exe.
  27. Windows 3.1
  28.     1. On your CD-ROM, find Enable16.exe located in Support\Win 3.1.
  29.     2. Copy Enable16.exe to your hard drive.
  30.     3. Double-click on Enable16.exe.
  31. Be advised however that running this program may cause some problems 
  32. using your standard keyboard such as causing keystrokes to batch up.
  33.  
  34. OPEN AND SAVE DIALOGS
  35. You may experience problems with some software programs that you 
  36. launch from Launch and Learn if they require the user to open files
  37. from a specific directory.  Launch and Learn only allows users to 
  38. open/save files to a single directory.   If this happens, try moving 
  39. the desired file(s) into your childÆs directory located at Program 
  40. Files/Wonder Tools/Launch & Learn/Users/"ChildÆs Name".

  42. Some programs, such as Microsoft Word and Excel, use non-standard 
  43. save dialogs which Launch and Learn cannot intercept.  If your child
  44. is running one of these programs and they save a document, make 
  45. sure they navigate to the Program Files/Wonder Tools/Launch & 
  46. Learn/Users/"ChildÆs Name" directory before they save it.  This way they 
  47. will be able to see this saved file from the File Folder on the 
  48. Launch & Learn toolbar the next time they use Launch & Learn.

  50. PERFORMANCE 
  51. Check the troubleshooting section of the ParentÆs Guide for tips on 
  52. optimizing performance.

  54. SCREEN SAVERS
  55. If you are running a screen saver that has password protection while 
  56. Launch & Learn is running, disable the password otherwise it will
  57. conflict with Launch & Learn's security features.  
  58.  
  59. TIPS FOR OPTIMIZING MEMORY UNDER WINDOWS 3.1
  60. If you are running on Windows 3.1 and are having memory problems, 
  61. there are several steps you can try:
  62.  
  63. On Windows 3.1, it is strongly recommended that you create at least
  64. 8 MBs of virtual memory.  This will occupy slightly more space on 
  65. your hard drive, but will improve performance.  (Refer to your 
  66. Windows guide on Changing Swap-File Settings by using the Control 
  67. Panel).  Make sure you set virtual memory type as permanent not as 
  68. temporary.

  70. Also, if you feel comfortable editing config.sys on Windows 3.1, 
  71. set File=85 and Buffer=20.  To do this, follow these steps:
  72. 1.  From Program Manager, double-click on Accessories icon.
  73. 2.  Double-Click on Notepad icon.
  74. 3.  From the file menu, select open.
  75. 4.  In "List Files of Type:" box, make sure "all files (*.*)"
  76.     is selected.
  77. 5.  In large right window, double-click on C:\.
  78. 6.  In large left window, double-click on config.sys.
  79. 7.  In config.sys look for file and buffer entries and change them 
  80.     so they say File=85 and Buffer=20.
  81. 8.  Save the new settings.
  82. 9.  Restart Windows
  83.  
  84. Finally, run MemMaker or another memory optimization utility to 
  85. optimize memory configuration.  To run MemMaker, follow these steps:
  86. 1.  Exit to DOS
  87. 2.  From C: type memmaker
  88. 3.  Press Enter
  89. 4.  Follow on-screen instructions.

  92. SOUND AND DISPLAY TIPS
  93. If your computer uses any of the following sound cards and you are 
  94. running under Windows 3.1, you may experience sound problems:

  99. ATI Gravis Ultra
  100. Microsoft Sound System
  101. Aztec 16

  103. Contact the sound card manufacturer for technical support.

  105. If you are experiencing sporadic application failures or corrupted 
  106. palettes and you have a video card that uses a Cirrus Logic chip 
  107. set, you may require updated video drivers or BIOS ROM.  Contact 
  108. Cirrus Logic or your video card manufacturer for technical support.
  109.  
  110.  
  111. OTHER COMPATIBILITY TIPS
  112.  
  113. Some adult programs that require extensive use of templates and 
  114. saving of files such as Lotus Notes and Quicken cannot be used 
  115. within Launch & Learn.
  116.  
  117. If you own Microsoft's Intellipoint Mouse and are experiencing
  118. difficulty using your mouse after you install the Wonder Tools 
  119. software, chances are you have an older version of their driver. 
  120. Contact Microsoft to obtain their latest drivers.
  121.  
  122. If you are using other third-party peripherals that plug into the 
  123. keyboard port and are experiencing difficulty using them after you 
  124. have installed the Wonder Tools Software, you may have a 
  125. compatibility problem between the two sets of device drivers.  
  126.  
  127. If you are using the Wonder Tools Keyboard with an IBM PS/2, you 
  128. may see a "303 Keyboard Error" message that comes up on rebooting 
  129. after install.  Just press the escape key and the program should 
  130. run without a problem.

  132. On some systems running under Windows'95, when Advanced Power 
  133. Management (APM) is on, if you leave the Wonder Tools Software running
  134. and you leave the computer alone, when APM kicks in it may lock up 
  135. your system.  This can be addressed by turning APM off as follows:
  136. 1. From the Start Menu, select Control Panel.
  137. 2. Double-click on the Power icon.
  138. 3. In the Power Management box, there will be a drop down menu.  Make
  139.    sure that Off is selected.
  140. 4. Click on the OK button to leave the Contrl Panel and reset your
  141.    machine.
