- How to install this version of PGP.
- ===================================
-
- (Note: This is easier than it looks. I'm giving a lot of
- detail.)
-
- 1. Make sure it hasn't been tampered with.
-
- (This stage is for paranoiacs and people with unreliable
- networks or floppies. It requires that you already have a
- copy of PGP, perhaps on a different system.)
-
- - Check that the key in key/asc is really mine.
- - Check the signatures on the files in this directory,
- the detached signatures on the executables "pgp" and
- "md5sum", and the signature on "all/md5".
- - In the directory containing those files, type
- "md5sum -c all/md5" and see if everything checks out
- correctly.
-
- For a lower level of security, you can just do that last
- step; this doesn't require you to have PGP already, it
- doesn't protect you at all against malicious attack, but
- it does offer some protection against damage from network
- errors, dodgy floppies and bit rot.
-
- Most distributions of PGP contain a signature for the
- entire archive, signed by the principal developers.
- Because of the filename changes needed, this version
- can't use that archive and therefore doesn't have those
- people's signatures. However, wherever you got this
- distribution from there should also be a detached signature
- for the archive, signed by me.
-
- 2. Put the executable somewhere sensible.
-
- The file "pgp" is the program that does all the work.
- You should move it (or copy it) somewhere where it will
- be found when you type "pgp" at a command line.
-
- If you have no idea where that might be, have a look
- to see whether there's a directory called "Lib" at the
- top level on your hard disc, containing lots of files
- of type "Absolute". If so, move "pgp" into there and
- all should be well. If not, try getting a command line
- and typing "Show Run$Path", and see if that inspires
- any thoughts.
-
- If you want to be able to use "md5sum" and "pgpsort",
- you should move them to the same place as you put "pgp".
-
- 3. Put the other files somewhere sensible.
-
- In order to run properly, PGP needs to be able to find
- some important files. You should make a directory for them
- somewhere.
-
- If all this talk of making directories mystifies you,
- then you might want to do it this way.
-
- Find a spare spot on your hard disc.
- Menu-click with your mouse there, follow the
- "New directory" submenu, type "!PGP" in the
- little box and hit return.
- Shift-double-click on the "!PGP" directory that
- should just have appeared.
- Use a text editor to create a file in there called
- "!Run", containing the line "Set PGPPATH <Obey$Dir>".
- This directory here is the directory to use for what
- follows...
-
- Right, so you've chosen or manufactured a directory.
- Move or copy the following files into it.
-
- All the ".../hlp" files.
- lang/txt.
- The "doc" directory.
-
- 4. Make a config/txt file.
-
- If you already have a version of PGP, then you already have
- a file somewhere called config/txt, used by PGP. Copy it
- into the directory you just put all those other things into.
-
- If not, copy the config/txt file in this distribution there.
- Later, you may want to change it a bit; for now, don't worry
- about it.
-
- 5. Install a Wimp front end, if you want.
-
- If you don't like doing things from the command line,
- you might want to get hold of a Wimp front end for PGP.
- The nicest one known to me is called Crypter, and I think
- you can get it from HENSA.
-
- 6. Before you use PGP you will need to set the system variable
- PGPPATH to contain the name of the directory in which you
- put all those files. If you created a !PGP directory in the
- way I described above, this will happen when you double-click
- on the !PGP directory; if not, it's probably best to put a
- command "Set PGPPATH whatever-it-was" in your boot sequence.
- Do *not* put a trailing dot on the directory name, despite
- the "PATH" at the end of the variable name. :-)
-
- You should now be ready to use PGP. But before you do so,
- *please* read doc.pgpdoc1/t and -RiscOS.Hints; both will
- tell you important things. Failure to read these could
- result in disaster.
