  51. - Due to a number of real life issues such as a graduation project that
  52.   needed to be finished and a death in my family, I haven't updated the
  53.   list in a while. I know this version has been delayed for much longer
  54.   than I had hoped, but believe me, this has been a very, very busy
  55.   time for me and the pressure will most likely not go away anytime
  56.   soon. I still have about 200 sites in the queue to be added or updated
  57.   so don't be surprised if your entry did not show up yet or is still the
  58.   old one.
  59. - This version is the first release in 1996 (previous one being

  81. This is a comprehensive alphabetic listing of Internet sites accepting
  82. Anonymous FTP. To find out what Anonymous FTP is and how to use it, read
  83. the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) List, distributed separately.

  85. Site   : site address (no IP numbers, they change too frequently)
  86. Country: country where site is located
  87. GMT    : hours from GMT (+/-)
  88. Date   : date of last modification for site
  89. Source : last updater of entry or source of information
  90. Alias  : any listed aliases (machinenames or 'netnames', the nicknames
  91.          by which they are known to the people most using them)
  92. Admin  : administrative address for comments or reporting problems
  93. Organ  : organization operating site and location in country
  94. Server : email server address and instructions if available
  95. System : type of server (hardware and Operating System if known)
  96. URL    : Universal Resource Locator, to be used with a World Wide Web browser
  97. Comment: any general comments or restrictions
  98. Files  : types of files, archives, or mirrors available
  99.  
  100. If, for some reason(s), you can't use the sitename (also called cname)
  101. but need the so called IP address, here's how to get it:
  102.  
  103. Easiest for most people, assuming they're not in a hurry, is to
  104. send mail to:

  108. With an empty Subject line and in the body of the message:

  116. For more information send the single word 'help' to the same address.
  117. If you're able to use the 'nslookup' command on your system you can
  118. find out interactively. On a Unix system try 'man nslookup' for help
  119. on using nslookup. Another way is to use 'telnet <sitename>', normally
  120. that shows the IP address of the site as well.
  121.  
  122. Unless otherwise stated, all sites take 'anonymous' for the username
  123. and your e-mail address for the password. A side remark on this
  124. one: I only check for username 'anonymous', it's not called Anonymous
  125. FTP for nothing. But if you find a site that does accept 'ftp', guest'
  126. or something like that (with an e-mail address for the password) and
  127. not 'anonymous', let me know and I'll add it to the list. Most sites
  128. accept username 'ftp' as well. Another note on my checking of sites:
  129. if I had a problem connecting to a site, you will find a remark about
  130. that in the Comment: line; Problem: symptom of problem. This does
  131. not mean that that site is no longer operational, just that it wasn't
  132. reachable for me at that moment.

  134. Dates are represented in the Day-Month-Year format.

  136. Some of the more common abbreviations used in this list are:

  144. Times are expressed in GMT + or - several hours, e.g. +1 means GMT+1,
  145. -5 means GMT-5. I don't want to use daylight savings or something
  146. like summertime or whatever because it complicates matters. I'm going
  147. to add a sort of timescale here someday with the most used times

  170. Please remember to use sites during off-peak (1800-0600 or 6pm-6am
  171. local time) hours and within your area, before jumping to international
  172. archives. If they have regional access or limited links, respect their
  173. restrictions.
  174. And remember that mirrors are here for a reason. It's often much faster
  175. to check if the file(s) you're looking for are mirrored close by and
  176. getting them there, than getting them from somewhere distant (and slow).
  177.  
  178. Most important of all:
  179. Anonymous FTP access is a privilege and can be denied at any time.
  180. Don't ruin it for yourself and lots of others by overusing a site
  181. or not abiding by their rules.
  182.  
  183. If you notice any changes to a site, please let me know. Site admins
  184. should read my FAQ for the specific information I need. Note: this
  185. release has some sites that haven't been checked yet, or have been
  186. checked but I was unable to fill in all the information. This is not
  187. standard procedure, but a temporary thing (my backlogs were starting
  188. to grow a bit too big).

  190. A comment on Archie: Use this service! For those that don't know what
  191. Archie is, please read my FAQ. Also, services like gopher or WWW can
  192. be much easier to use than 'bare bones' FTP. Try them.
