  4.          INTERNET ACCESS TO THE INFORMATION HIGHWAY WITH SHAREWARE!

  6.        Internet Access CD-ROM has a lot of shareware on it so you can get 
  7.        into nethopping at a low initial cost.
  8.  
  9.        There are terminal programs to operate your modem. There are
  10.        programs that will allow you to navigate Internet without having
  11.        to go out and buy some of the expensive commercial software. In
  12.        fact, some of the shareware on this disk is actually BETTER than
  13.        what you can get in the commercial market. You will be able to
  14.        figure out your needs as you go.

  16.        If you decide to stick with shareware, be sure the authors know
  17.        it! Register the software you decide to use. There are definite
  18.        advantages and, if nothing else, it will benefit you by
  19.        inspiring the author to either produce more shareware or upgrade
  20.        your existing package.

  24.                           THE SHAREWARE CONCEPT
  25.  
  26.        The shareware concept is really simple. You get to "try" before
  27.        you "buy".  Have you ever went and bought something that, after
  28.        you got it home, really wasn't what you wanted? Well, with
  29.        software, once you break the shrinkwrap, you can't take it back
  30.        and you can't try it without breaking the shrinkwrap. So, if you
  31.        buy a package and its not what you want or need, you have to
  32.        either use it, sell it privately or just count your money as a
  33.        loss. None of those are satisfactory.

  35.        Shareware is different. You get the package, whether from
  36.        CD-ROM, diskette or download it from a BBS. You install it, read
  37.        the licensing agreement and then proceed to use it. If you like
  38.        it, you are required to register it within a certain amount of
  39.        time (usually 30 days) or your temporary license aggreement will
  40.        expire and you won't be able to legally use it.

  42.        As you can see, this is a whole lot different from commercial
  43.        software when they get your money up front and won't give it
  44.        back. What's amazing to me is that a lot of shareware is
  45.        actually better than its commercial counterparts.
