INETS: The Internet in Summary:
The Internet is built from hundreds of smaller networks. It connects
about a million computers and tens of millions of users. Beyond its
components and statistics, how it's used, and which directions it's
taking, the really striking thing about the Internet is its constant
growth. Next month there may be 20 new systems, the month after, 500.
The Internet is a web of different, intercommunicating networks
funded by both commercial and government organizations. The Internet
also has spread overseas to connect to networks in over 40 countries,
including France, Germany, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and even
Antarctica. The Internet is divided into many subnetworks with large
super computers, mainframes, minicomputers and personal computers. The
number constantly changes and grows at a pace that is hard to describe.
The Internet holds information in amounts that are beyond your largest
expectations. It contains only a fraction of the vast mountains of
human knowledge, yet it will overwhelm you.
The Internet CD-ROM will help you exploit the systems on the Internet
for the desired information or software. One thing I have learned by
net hopping is that you will find several magnitudes of information
beyond what you expect when you look for it on the Internet or you
will find nothing. Usually though, if you find nothing, it because
you haven't learned where to look for it. Be patient and enjoy the
experience.
