FTP: FILES ACROSS THE INTERNET
FTP is the three letter abbreviation for File Transfer Protocol.
This is a specific term for a peice of software that can be run
on most systems connected to the internet. It allows you to
connect to other systems and move (copy would be a more
appropriate term) to the local machine. Once the file or files is
copied, the user can do whatever she/he wishes. It can be
downloaded to your PC or leave it on the local machine. If its a
peice of software, you can run it. If its a text file, you can
read it.
FTP in itself may be somewhat boring, however, the results can
be very exciting. Its the fastest way to get information there
is! One reason for this is a special system refered to as an
"Anonymous FTP Site". Actually, any system on the Internet can
allow anonymous FTP but not all do. The system managers of some
machines reserve some disk space that will allow you to send
files into and get files from.
Anonymous FTP is nothing shady or illegal. The anonymous FTP
account is something like a guest account. When you connect to
the remote system with FTP it will ask you for a username.
Always use "anonymous". It will then ask you for a password. It
will take almost anything but most system managers would like
you to enter your e-mail address as the password. After that, if
the system allows anonymous FTP, your in. You can do "cd"
commands to change directories. You can do "ls" commands to list
files and directories. Most of all, you can use "get" to get
files and "put" to send files to the remote computer.
The hardest part (and maybe the most interesting) is finding out
the address of the computer that holds the files you need. This
can be done with GOPHER, WAIS or ARCHIE. ARCHIE being the most
common. These programs will help you locate the files you are
looking for. Good luck! I know You will have a blast!
The process goes like this. You pick a subject. You then call
into your Internet service provider. Then, you get onto a system
that has ARCHIE. You search for keywords for your subject.
ARCHIE returns Internet addresses and filenames. You then, drop
out of ARCHIE and FTP to an adresses that was specified by
ARCHIE. You "get" the files after moving around to the directory
they are located.
Once the file(s) are back onto your Internet service providers
system, you can download them to your PC. You may want to
examine examine them before hand, possibly deciding to keep them
or delete them rather than take up space on your hard disk.
