| IBM DAPTOOLS Now Available on CompuServe | cstools
+------------------------------------------+
DAPTOOLS is a library of useful programs for software developers.
DAPTOOLS consists of tools, utilities, and source code examples. Access
to DAPTOOLS is restricted, and is offered to members of IBM's Worldwide
Developer Assistance Program as a major benefit of joining the program.
The tools library was originally conceived as an extension of the OS/2
Toolkit, and was formerly called ESDTOOLS. In December 1992, the library
was renamed DAPTOOLS and brought under the auspices of the Developer
Assistance Program.
Until now, the DAPTOOLS library has been accessible only by IBMLink
users who are also Commercial and Premier Services members of IBM's U.S.
Developer Assistance Program. Now, all members of IBM's Worldwide
Developer Assistance Program can access DAPTOOLS via CompuServe.
Most of the existing DAPTOOLS programs have been copied to *DAP, the
private DAP section on CompuServe (library 14 in OS2DF2). In addition,
IBM is revitalizing DAPTOOLS by refreshing the existing tools, deleting
obsolete tools, and adding new ones.
Some programs on IBMLink were not copied to CompuServe because they have
been released as IBM Employee-Written Software and are available
elsewhere in CompuServe.
IMPORTANT!:
Programs in the DAPTOOLS library are licensed, and their
distribution is therefore restricted. Before downloading any of the
DAPTOOLS programs, you should read and consent to the DAPTOOLS
library license. The library license is found in the *DAP library on
CompuServe as file TOOLIC.TXT. It is also packaged with every
program in DAPTOOLS as file LIBRARY.LIC. Also, the library license
is being sent to each new user who registers in IBM's Worldwide
Developer Assistance Program.
In addition to the DAPTOOLS library license, each DAPTOOLS program
has its own individual license.
Users must treat DAPTOOLS programs as though they are licensed
program products. In particular, USERS MUST NOT UPLOAD DAPTOOLS
PROGRAMS ONTO PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE BULLETIN-BOARD AND E-MAIL SYSTEMS.
On CompuServe, the files in DAPTOOLS are in PKZIP format. Each zipped
file contains program code, the DAPTOOLS library license, the program
license, and the banner that is displayed when the file is unzipped.
If you have questions or comments about DAPTOOLS, call 1-407-982-6408,
option 6, or send a note via CompuServe to 71075,2553.
The contents of DAPTOOLS on CompuServe, as of 10 September 1993, are
given below. The last line of each entry gives the version number of the
tool, the date of that version's first appearance in DAPTOOLS, and the
author's name.

Get on the inside track for OS/2! Move light-years ahead of your
development competition!
The Developer Connection for OS/2, an annual subscription program, is a
convenient, timely, comprehensive source of information, tools, and
pre-release code from IBM that enables developers of software on the
32-bit OS/2 platform to fully exploit operating system functionality and
to develop state-of-the-art applications.
Designed from the ground up with the goal of providing everything you
need for your OS/2 development efforts, The Developer Connection for
OS/2 delivers the most current software technology, information, and
tools in a powerful, easily accessed format.
The cornerstone of The Developer Connection for OS/2 is The Developer
Connection CD, delivered four times a year to subscribers. Since the CD
contains pre-release and release-level code, it is considered beta, and
is licensed for 120 days or until the next release of The Developer
Connection for OS/2, whichever comes first.
Subscribers also receive The Developer Connection News, a newsletter
that accompanies the CD and delivers the most up-to-date information
about IBM personal operating systems direction, operating system
extensions, and development products. The Developer Connection News
also provides useful programming tips and other technical information.
When accessed from your CD drive, The Developer Connection for OS/2
becomes a part of your Workplace Shell environment. Click on The
Developer Connection icon, and all the wealth of The Developer
Connection for OS/2 is instantly available. Use the powerful Developer
Connection Browser to locate any piece of information. And, because the
intuitive graphical user interface is part of the Workplace Shell
environment, each task is familiar and simple. Try the products, install
them, or simply retrieve product information. There is also an available
option for creating diskettes for many of the products on the CD.

| AskPSP Expert Systems CD-ROM for Developers | pspexsys
+---------------------------------------------+
At the recent PSP Technical Interchange in Orlando, IBM Personal
Software Products demonstrated AskPSP, an expert systems application
that uses artificial intelligence to provide OS/2 and LAN Systems
developers with answers to their technical questions and problems.
AskPSP, which is now available free on CD-ROM as part of a limited pilot
program, is designed to provide developers with an on-line help desk
that is both comprehensive and easy to use.
Using AskPSP, developers can enter a natural-language description of the
problem. The system responds either with a set of possible answers,
culled from a library of case histories, or it asks the user more
questions to refine the search. The initial pilot of AskPSP
incorporates a library of 1,000 cases. If AskPSP cannot find an
appropriate answer in its case-history library, the developer can
automatically capture the question and search structure and send it to
IBM, so that it can be researched, answered, and added to the library
for future editions of AskPSP.
AskPSP can also be viewed as a productivity tool. When a problem arises,
the developer need only obtain a basic understanding of the problem, and
use AskPSP to see whether an answer has already been found. In many
cases, the developer will get an answer and will not have to devote days
or weeks to researching the question.
Because AskPSP is case-based, its search engine will help the user find
the one specific answer, or a small group of answers, to a question.
This differs from a keyword search, which may provide a large list of
items that must be reviewed before the answer is found.
AskPSP exemplifies the help desk of the future. It utilizes an
expert-system technology that runs in the OS/2 2.1 environment, and it
incorporates state-of-the-art OS/2 functions such as multimedia.
AskPSP utilizes the newly announced beta of CasePoint 1.3 for OS/2, from
Inference Corp., El Segundo CA. CasePoint provides high-speed, read-only
access to case libraries developed with Inference Corporation's CBR
Express, a tool for creating case-based retrieval systems. CBR Express
incorporates ART-Enterprise, Inference Corporation's development tool
for building intelligent systems.
IBM distributed AskPSP CD-ROMs at no charge to all developers who
attended the PSP Technical Interchange, and will give copies to
attendees of the upcoming OS/2 technical conferences in Europe.
A limited number of copies of AskPSP CD-ROMs are available free to OS/2
and LAN Systems developers as part of the AskPSP pilot program. To
request a copy of the AskPSP CD-ROM, call the PSP Developer Assistance
Program hotline, 1-407-982-6408.

| IBM Multimedia for LAN Server Beta Program, Second Release |
+------------------------------------------------------------+
The second release of the IBM Multimedia for LAN Server Beta Program has
been initiated. Orders for this beta can now be accepted and filled.
This beta release contains automated disk bandwidth detection
capability, support for larger numbers of client workstations, and
capability to use additional token-ring adapter types on the multimedia
server.
The IBM Multimedia for LAN Server beta program function extends the
considerable current distributed multimedia capability of IBM LAN Server
3.0 Advanced, which allows the playback of multimedia files on the
server to clients across a LAN, provided there is no congestion in the
server and the network. The beta multimedia support sets up a controlled
environment in which multimedia applications can be given the required
resource to ensure uncompromised playout at the clients, even when there
would otherwise be congestion on the LAN. This quality-of-service
capability is what distinguishes this solution from most other products
in this area.
The multimedia support can be easily added to an existing LAN in a
non-disruptive manner, so that current data applications can continue
without modification. The support is specifically designed to take
advantage of the token-ring LAN priority architecture, so that the
necessary bandwidth can be reserved to allow the time-dependent
multimedia streams to arrive at the client despite other network
traffic. In addition, server resources are reserved for disk and file
access, and clients are enhanced to improve the flow of images and sound
to the end user. Note that other environments, such as Ethernet, can
also be used with the IBM Multimedia for LAN Server beta function, but
the number of clients may have to be restricted to get acceptable
delivery.
Users wishing to exploit multimedia may now evaluate the opportunities
through the use of IBM LAN Server 3.0 with the IBM Multimedia for LAN
Server beta function. Typical applications that can be explored are:
"news-on-demand", kiosks, new employee training, annotated mail and
spreadsheets, classroom computer-assisted education, and many more. The
support is essentially application-independent; that is, those based on
the more popular approaches such as Indeo, DVI/AVI, Ultimotion, and
SoundBlaster are specifically accommodated, while others can be
accommodated according to their known characteristics. Additionally,
stand-alone applications based on MMPM/2 or AVK can be run in the
distributed mode without modification.
This multimedia support is available for DOS, Windows, and OS/2 clients
connected across a LAN to an IBM LAN Server 3.0 advanced server.
The contents of this beta program include the code, documentation, and
license required to install Multimedia for LAN Server. Beta program
interfaces and documentation are available in U.S. English only.

| System Performance Monitor/2 Version 2.0 | spm2v2
+------------------------------------------+
IBM's System Performance Monitor/2 (SPM/2) Version 2.0 helps developers
identify and solve performance problems quickly and accurately. SPM/2
collects, records, graphs, and reports performance data for the
following critical OS/2 2.x system resources:
o CPU (to the process and thread level)
o Disk
o Random Access Memory (RAM) (paging information to the process and
thread level)
o File accesses (by process and thread)
o HPFS / FAT cache
o Printer ports
o COM ports
LAN Server and Requester 3.0 resources are also collected.
SPM/2 2.0 lets you collect data from your local system, or from remote
workstations and servers connected via IBM LAN Server and Requester. You
can graphically display real-time CPU, disk, RAM, and working-set
utilization, or play back previously collected data from a log.
Reports enable analysis of collected information:
o Summary, tabular, and "dump" reports available for OS/2 resources
o "Dump" reports available for LAN Server/Requester resources
Dump reports contain the full detail of every metric value that was read
from the operating system, without any summarization.
The Presentation Manager-based Theseus2 memory analysis tool helps you
determine application memory requirements down to the process level, and
lets you view memory control blocks. Extensive on-line help is also
provided for understanding OS/2 2.x memory management.
You can use APIs to directly access performance data as it is collected,
or to define metrics specific to your application, and then have SPM/2
2.0 collect and report that data.
System Requirements
-------------------
o OS/2 2.0 with ServicePak XR06055 or later
or
o OS/23 2.1 plus the following SPM/2 fixes:

| CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 Available | 20cics
+---------------------------------+
IBM announces that CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 will be available on 24
September 1993. Two significant product functions are added:
o CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 is now enabled for installation by
unattended configuration, installation, and distribution (CID).
o By 31 December 1993, support for EBCDIC data will be available for
CICS OS/2 Version 2.0, via a Corrective Service Diskette (CSD).
CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 is enabled for unattended CID. Unattended CID
allows CICS OS/2 to be automatically configured, installed, and
distributed across a large network from a central location. Installation
and configuration options are read from a pre-prepared response file, so
there is no need for an operator to be present at the remote machine.
The same process can also be used for applying service updates.
CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 will be enhanced by the addition of a new facility
to allow application data to be passed to and returned from CICS OS/2 in
EBCDIC format. This allows a COBOL application under CICS OS/2 to
process data in an identical manner to a similar application running
under, for example, CICS/ESA. This function will be provided by 31
December 1993, via Corrective Service Diskette, available on customer
request.
CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 provides:
o Enhanced support for client/server online transaction processing on
stand-alone or host-connected local area network (LAN) configurations
with servers running OS/2 2.0
o Use of existing LANs and existing inventory of personal computers
running DOS, OS/2, or Windows
o Application of available CICS programming skills to the client/server
environment, allowing new applications to be implemented without
extensive training
o User productivity enhanced by enabling customers to build client
applications that exploit the advanced graphical user interface
capabilities of OS/2 2.0 or Windows
o Installation of CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 from diskettes, and use of a
range of CICS-supplied transactions for administrative tasks
o Exploitation of ASCII terminal emulators
o Support for 32-bit applications.
Over 50 systems integrators and independent software vendors have now
joined the CICS OS/2 Version 2 vendor program, with the intention of
providing products or services that exploit or are compatible with the
CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 platform. These products include Business
Applications and Application Development tools including Graphical User
Interface tools and services. IBM maintains an up-to-date list of these
independent software vendors and systems integrators. To obtain this
information, contact your IBM representative.

| Industry Leaders Agree on Common Interface Specification for |
| UNIX-Based Operating Systems |
+--------------------------------------------------------------+
More than 75 of the world's leading UNIX system suppliers and software
developers today announced agreement on a comprehensive specification
defining a common set of application programming interfaces (APIs) for
UNIX-based operating systems. The common API specification enhances the
portability of UNIX system-based applications, while maintaining the
benefits of having multiple, competitive implementations of the
operating system.
This specification will provide significant new benefits for software
developers and end users. Developers will be able to write a single
version of each application and recompile to make it available across
all compliant UNIX system platforms. In addition, the specification
allows developers to continue to exploit the unique functions that will
be found in different vendors' implementations. End users will benefit
from increased application availability while taking advantage of
choice, innovation and performance optimization.
X/Open Company Ltd. has agreed to formalize industry consensus, to brand
compliant product implementations, and to manage the evolution of the
common UNIX system-based API specification. The specification
development and review process has received the support of UNIX system
suppliers representing 90 percent of the worldwide UNIX system market,
according to International Data Corp., a market research firm based in
Framingham, Mass. All organizations have agreed to participate in the
industry-wide review process.
"The release of this specification for a common set of UNIX system-based
APIs is a watershed event for vendors and users," said Geoff Morris,
president and chief executive officer of X/Open. "This initiative
increases the choice of solutions for companies that have adopted open
systems strategies incorporating UNIX system-based platforms. We expect
that the combination of this common specification with the X/Open brand
will accelerate the implementation of open systems to achieve increased
business advantage."
The APIs were selected based on formal industry standards (X/Open
Portability Guide (XPG)) and widely supported specifications (System V
Interface Definition (SVID) and Application Environment Specification
(AES)) and API usage data from leading UNIX system-based applications
from vendors, including Autodesk, Cadence Design Systems, Cadre
Technologies, Inc., Frame Technology Corp., Informix Software, Inc.,
Island Graphics Corp., Lotus Development Corp., Oracle Corp., and
WordPerfect Corp.
This process of selecting APIs based on their industry acceptance
differentiates this effort from previous standardization attempts, will
result in increased portability for many existing applications and will
simplify the porting process for other applications. No other operating
system adheres to this level of standardization while simultaneously
offering this range of portability, scalability and range of platforms.
An industry workgroup consisting of UNIX system vendors, the Open
Software Foundation (OSF) and UNIX International, Inc., (UI), adhering
to principles outlined by the common open software environment process
announced earlier this year, has created the initial draft specification
and will work with X/Open to review and complete this specification.
The following companies and organizations are indicating their support
for the specification development and will participate in the review
process: Acer, Amdahl Corp., Apple Computer, Inc., AT&T/NCR Corp.,
Autodesk, Banyan Systems, Inc., Bellcore, Bentley Systems, Inc., Bull
Worldwide Information Systems, Cadence Design Systems, Cadre
Technologies, Inc., Chorus Systems, Computer Associates International,
Inc., Convex Computer Corp., Cray Research, Inc., Data General Corp.,
DHL Worldwide Express, DigiBoard, Digital Equipment Corp., EDS
Unigraphics, Encore Computer Corp., Frame Technology Corp., Fuji Xerox,
88open Consortium, Ltd., Fujitsu, HaL Computer Systems, Hewlett-Packard
Company, Hitachi Ltd., IBM Corp., ICL, Informix Software, Inc.,
Integrated Computer Solutions, Island Graphics Corp., Lachman
Technology, Inc., Locus Computing Corp., Lotus Development Corp.,
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., McDonald's Corp., Mentor Graphics
Corp., MIPS ABI Group, Motorola Computer Group, Mitsubishi Electric
Corp., NEC Corp., Novell-UNIX System Laboratories (USL), Oki Electric
Industries Co. Ltd., Olivetti S.p.A, Open Software Foundation, Oracle
Corp., Pencom, PowerOpen Association, Inc., Precision Risc Organization,
Pyramid Technology Corp., the Santa Cruz Operation, Sequent Computer
Systems, Inc., Sequoia Systems, Inc., SHARP Corp., Siemens-Nixdorf,
Silicon Graphics Computer Systems, Inc., Software AG of North America,
Sony Corp., SPARC International, Stratus Computer, Inc., Structural

SunSelect, SunSoft, Tadpole Technology, PLC, Tandem Computers Inc.,
THOMSON-CSF/CETIA, Toshiba Corp., Unisys, UNIX International, Inc.,
VERITAS Software, Wal*Mart Stores, Inc., Wang Laboratories, Inc., and
WordPerfect Corp.
This announcement reinforces the position of UNIX-based systems as the
premier 32-bit and 64-bit operating environment for open systems. The
common API specifications for UNIX-based operating systems will be
freely available to all organizations.

| Cannavino Outlines Key Technologies in CAMP Keynote Address |
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
In his kenyote address at the fall conference of the Corporate
Association of Microcomputer Professionals (CAMP) on 9 September in
Chicago, IBM Senior Vice President and Group Executive Jim Cannavino
shared his view of the technology trends that will drive the growth of
the personal computer industry, and upon which IBM has based its systems
strategy. Those technology trends include powerful advances in
microprocessor speed and performance, the enormous productivity benefits
of object-oriented programming, and the explosion of communications
bandwidth.
Those trends, Cannavino pointed out, have enabled a new era in personal
computing, in which businesses are able to distribute computing function
more widely, at lower cost, and in ways previously impossible through
multimedia.
Cannavino went on to discuss how the continued advancement of those
technologies has caused a fundamental restructuring of the information
industry. At the same time, he said, the value that companies and
end-users place on the industry's offerings has shifted from the
technology itself to the innovative application of technology.
Following his brief opening remarks, Cannavino used the remainder of his
time to address audience questions.

OS/2 and LAN Server Application Directory
-----------------------------------------
The OS/2 and LAN Server Application Directory will include OS/2 products
that exploit features unique to OS/2 Version 2 and IBM OS/2 LAN Server
applications that have been certified as READY! for LAN Server.
The directory is targeted for users of OS/2 and IBM OS/2 LAN Server
through newsstands and bookstores. It will also be available to the IBM
sales force. The directory will be promoted through advertising, direct
mail, and trade shows.
For products that meet eligibility requirements, listings are free.
Software developers may choose to purchase additional advertising by
adding logos or buying full- or half-page ads. Call for an advertising
information brochure.
Product listings in the directory are closed for 1993. Most advertising
opportunities are available until late September 1993. Information about
the 1994 Application Directory will be provided at a future date.

OS/2 Application Demonstration CD-ROM
-------------------------------------
Use a highly effective medium for your product demonstration and
advertising. IBM produces an OS/2 CD-ROM, listing ISV applications that
exploit OS/2 Version 2. For a fee, you can list your product, as well as
include product demos and "infomercials".
The OS/2 Application Demonstration CD-ROM will be distributed with The
SelectWare Technologies, Inc. system, which reaches a quarter million
computer users with CD-ROM players each quarter.
Product listings, demonstrations, and "infomercial" rates will be based
on the prevailing rates and contract period.
This is an ongoing program, available now.

worldwide marketing and support teams, customers, dealers, and other IBM
Business Partners.
There is no cost to you to list your products and services in the NSC.
This is an ongoing program, available now.

Take advantage of this opportunity to extend your special promotions to
OS/2 Version 2 customers. Your offer could be a discount, demo diskette,
rebate, free upgrade, or product information. The OS/2 Solutions Pak
(U.S. edition) and the OS/2 Solutions Coupon Book (European edition) are
great avenues to advertise your OS/2 product to thousands of OS/2 users!
The U.S. OS/2 Solutions Pak will include up to 100 pages of four-color,
half- and full-page ads, as well as black-and-white "classified" ads, in
a 5.5-inch by 8.5-inch book.
The books will be included inside each copy of OS/2 Version 2 sold in
the U.S. and Europe. The U.S. OS/2 Solutions Pak will be printed in

-------------
You are invited to exhibit your OS/2 product as part of the OS/2 Tour
'93 roadshow in the United States. The OS/2 Tour '93 offering is a
two-day event. The topics include introductory OS/2 overviews, OS/2
technical sessions, and technical sessions specifically geared for large
accounts and VARs/VADs. You will also be provided with a list of show
attendees for follow-up marketing.

successful buying decisions. Anticipated attendance is in the 400 to 500
range for each event. Extended breaks between sessions allow you to make
contact with a variety of show attendees.
A 10-foot by 12-foot exhibit space with a six-foot skirted table and
electrical outlet is 325 USD. Space is allocated on a first-come,
first-served basis.

Join in the 800-number marketing opportunities of the '90s! Instead of
buying your own 800 number, use the USA or Canadian IBM numbers to
market your software applications. Callers will be able to select your
product and have the convenience of direct mail delivery.
Callers to the IBM USA number, 1-800-346-6672, or the Canadian number,
1-800-465-1234, will be offered the option to hear about available OS/2
applications. Currently, over 10,000 customers call these numbers
weekly.
Costs vary by type of product advertised. Call for your customized
package today.

Ready! for LAN Server Certification Program
-------------------------------------------
********************************************************************
* *
* Special Promotion *
* *
* Certify your application no later than 29 September 1993, and *
* receive a LAN Server logo watch. *
* *
* By 29 September, IBM must receive: *
* o Your signed license agreement *
* o Test results and instructions *
* o Your product description form *
* o A copy of your software application *
* *
********************************************************************
Similar to the OS/2 compatibility mark, a self-certification mark is now
available for products that are compatible with OS/2 LAN Server 3.0. By
placing the mark on your LAN Server-compatible product, you show the
marketplace that your product has been self-tested, and runs on LAN
Server.
There is no charge to license the LAN Server self-certification mark.
Requirements include: completing a self-certification process; providing
IBM with information regarding the testing procedures; and signing a
license agreement to use the mark in your advertising and on your
shrink-wrap products. IBM will then provide camera-ready artwork and
forms for ordering stickers as needed.
The LAN Server certification mark can be added to your LAN Server, OS/2,
and Windows products that successfully run on LAN Server 3.0.
