Title: Appendix S: WordPerfect Fax Driver Installation
Product: WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS
Number: 1106-10/93
The Fax Services feature included with WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS
works with FaxBios-compatible fax drivers. FaxBios is an
industry standard that controls how applications such as
WordPerfect interact with fax drivers. FaxBios allows you to
send faxes, receive faxes, view faxes, and monitor fax
transmissions within WordPerfect.
Many fax modem manufacturers are developing FaxBios-compatible
drivers to ship with their modems. If your fax driver is not
FaxBios-compatible, you can use one of the fax drivers included
with WordPerfect (FaxDirect and FaxB, or INTELFAX.COM).
FaxDirect is a fax driver that will send and receive faxes on
most Class 1, Class 2, and Sierra SendFax-compatible fax modems.
FaxB is a FaxBios driver that allows FaxDirect to work with
FaxBios-compatible applications.
INTELFAX.COM is a FaxBios driver that works with Intel fax
drivers for its Connection CoProcessor fax modems (models 200,
400, and Classic). If you have an Intel Connection CoProcessor
other than the models listed, you should use FaxDirect and FaxB
to access the Fax Services feature.
Installing WordPerfect Fax Drivers
Fax drivers can be installed using either Custom Installation or
Standard Installation. For simplicity, however, we recommend
that you install the fax drivers when you first install
WordPerfect. To install fax drivers using Standard Installation,
1 Start the WordPerfect 6.0 Installation program and choose
Standard Installation.
2 Proceed through the installation until you are asked, Do you
want to install any Fax Files?
3 Choose Yes.
4 From the Fax Device Options dialog box, choose from the
following options based on the type of fax modem you are
using:
Option What It Does
FaxBios Compatible Choose this option if you are already using a
FaxBios- compatible driver for your fax
modem. If this is the case, you will not
need to use a fax driver provided with
WordPerfect; your fax program will allow you
to access the Fax Services option.
Intel SatisFAXtion Choose this option if you are using an Intel
SatisFAXtion modem. INTELFAX.COM will be
placed in the directory specified for program
files (the default is WP60). Intel's fax TSR
(CASMGR.EXE) must be loaded before you load
INTELFAX.COM. After you have done this,
start WordPerfect and the Fax Services option
will be available. Class I or Class Choose
this option if you do not have a II Fax Modem
FaxBios-compatible driver with your modem.
This option lets you customize the FaxDirect
program using the WordPerfect CAS Setup
Utility (see Setting Up FaxDirect and FaxB
later in this section).
If you are using a FaxBios-compatible driver other than FaxDirect
or FaxB, you should install it prior to starting WordPerfect so
that the Fax Services option is available. In addition, if you
are using FaxDirect and FaxB, you should unload any other fax
TSRs before you start FaxDirect.
Installing Fax Drivers Only
If you did not install fax drivers when you first installed
WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS, but would like to do so now,
1 Start the WordPerfect 6.0 Installation program.
2 Choose Device Files (Sound, Graphics, Fax, Printer) from the
Installation Type dialog box.
3 Specify the directory from which you are installing, then
press Enter.
4 Confirm the location of your WordPerfect program files, then
press Enter.
5 Choose Fax Files.
6 Choose from the options listed in the Fax Device Options
dialog box, based on the type of fax modem you are using
(see Installing WordPerfect Fax Drivers above for a
description of each available option).
Setting Up FaxDirect and FaxB
If you choose the Class I or Class II Fax Modem option, the
WordPerfect CAS Setup Utility will let you customize FaxDirect
based on your needs. Use the following steps to specify your
preferences:
1 Specify the directory where you want fax files installed,
then press Enter.
2 Choose User Information.
3 Type your name (or company name) in the Your Name: entry
field, then press Enter. The name you enter here will
appear on the header of the faxes you send.
4 Type the number of your own fax device in the Fax Number:
entry field, then press Enter. The number you enter here
will appear on the header of the faxes you send.
5 Choose Hardware Driver Setup.
6 Specify the COM port you will be using in the COM Port:
entry field.
Most external modems use COM1 or COM2. Most internal modems use
COM2, COM3, or COM4. The default setting is the first available
COM port that FaxDirect detects, starting at COM4 and working
down to COM1.
7 If you have nonstandard Base I/O or IRQ settings, use the
User option to manually define these settings.
8 Specify the type of driver your modem is using in the
Hardware Driver: entry field. If you are not sure what kind
of driver your modem is using, refer to the documentation
that came with it.
Once you have loaded FaxDirect and FaxB and specified these
options, Fax Services will become available in WordPerfect. There
are a number of other setup options available in the WordPerfect
CAS Setup Utility. WordPerfect assigns default settings for all
of these other settings, but you may want to use them to further
customize the fax capabilities that are made available by
FaxDirect.
Questions and Answers About Getting Set Up to Fax
What kinds of fax modems are compatible with WordPerfect?
WordPerfect does not directly communicate with the fax modem, so
the type of fax modem is not an issue. WordPerfect uses the
FaxBios standard to communicate with the fax driver, which is
usually a TSR program. If the fax driver you are using is not
FaxBios-compatible, you must use the fax drivers that WordPerfect
supplies to access the Fax Services feature from within
WordPerfect 6.0. The drivers that are included with WordPerfect
support Class 1 or Class 2 fax devices. For more information,
see Installing WordPerfect Fax Drivers earlier in this section).
With the fax drivers loaded, WordPerfect gives an error message
Not enough memory for graphics. What should I do?
Fax drivers take up memory. FaxDirect and Intel fax drivers can
use expanded memory to free up some conventional memory. If you
have expanded memory, make sure the EMS Usage option in the
WordPerfect CAS Setup Utility program (SETUP.EXE) is set to use
EMS memory. For Intel users, see the documentation for your
specific product for instructions on how to use EMS memory.
If you have a 386 processor or higher, you can load some fax
programs into high memory to free up some additional conventional
memory. Unloading other TSRs will also free up memory.
FaxDirect drivers can be unloaded if more memory is needed. To
unload FaxDirect, change directories to the directory where
FaxDirect and FaxB are located (usually the WordPerfect program
directory). Type faxdir /r to unload FAXB.COM and FAXDIR.EXE.
What if I have loaded FaxDirect and FaxB, but the Fax Services
option is not available?
The most common cause is that either FaxDirect or FaxB were not
installed correctly. To test this, exit WordPerfect and unload
FaxB and FaxDirect by typing faxdir /r. Re-install both programs
manually and look for error messages during startup. If no error
messages appear and the Fax Services option is still not
available, you may have specified an incorrect COM port. Try
specifying a different COM port (see Setting Up FaxDirect and
FaxB earlier in this section for instructions on specifying a COM
port). Try all four COM ports. If none of the four COM ports
activate FaxServices, call WordPerfect Customer Support.
Additional Information
Fax Dialing Modifiers When you specify the fax number you want to
dial, you can include a comma (,) with the fax number to cause a
brief pause in the dialing process. You can define the length of
the pause in the WordPerfect CAS Setup Utility program by
choosing Dialing Options Setup, and then choosing Comma Delay
Time.
Using commas, you can type in an entire dialing sequence, adding
pauses where you need to wait for a tone. For example, if you
want to use a credit card number to pay for the call, and you are
dialing from a phone where you need to dial 9 to get an outside
line, you would type in something like
9,0-111-555-1234<,,,,credit card number>. (The numbers between
the chevron brackets (<>) will not appear on the header of the
fax transmission.)
You may also want to use a pause when sending a fax to an
international number. A pause allows the additional time that is
often necessary to connect with the international carrier.
