ABOUT.TTE - 11/19/93
I wrote this editor because I saw a need for a user-friendly utility to edit
Tiny Tafels with. It is my hope that this program will be easy to use for
both the novice and experienced computer user and that it will remove the
guesswork about how to create a Tiny Tafel.
This editor conforms to the v1.7 TT specifications. Header lines are
cropped to 40 characters. Surname lines are cropped to 80 characters. If
you plan to submit your TT to the Tafel Matching System (TMS) make sure that
every surname, year, and place field has an entry. If the information is
not available, just take your best guess. Failure to do so could result in
TMS being unable to process your TT. The name field in the header of the TT
is mandatory. It is wise to include a telephone number and a mailing
address too. (Your TT could go far, and not everyone can communicate
electronically. Don't limit your TT's potential to help you.)
To use the editor, simply load up a TT file. Use your arrow keys to select
a line to edit and press ENTER for an edit window. The editor will
determine what kind of line you selected and will provide you with the
appropriate edit fields. Use your DEL key to delete a highlighted line.
Use your INS key to add surname lines. Remember that the F1 key is the help
key. There are a few other commands here and there. The help key will
guide you until you master the program. Use it often.
There are some command line parameters. You can see a list of them by
loading the editor with a question mark after it. Like this: TTEDIT ?
This program is marketed as Shareware. Shareware does not mean Public
Domain, and it does not mean Free. It is a "try before you buy" marketing
method. Shareware can traded and copied with very few limitations. You can
also get shareware from most BBS's or by paying a small fee (which I get
no part of) to a shareware distributor.
Shareware authors are compensated for their work -only- when you register
a program with them. They depend on your sense of fair play for financial
support and on your suggestions and feedback for ways to improve their
software.
Shareware is much like commercial software: there are good programs and
bad programs in both markets. However, you have the ultimate guarantee
with shareware. If you do not use it, you do not have to pay for it.
In the case of TTEDIT, you have the finished product. There are no serial
numbers, no fancy packages, no printed manuals, and no "professional"
program versions. This is it. You already have everything there is.
You can try it in your time, on your computer, with your unique genealogy
data to make sure it works for you. I ask that if you use it, please
register it by paying a one-time fee of $15. When you register, I'll send
you the latest version on disk, a copy of my genealogy program (Family
Scrapbook) to try out, a copy of the Tafel Collection that I keep, and you
will be entitled to use all future versions of the Tiny Tafel Editor
without any further obligation.
By registering this program, you will be supporting its future development
and encouraging the development of other shareware programs.
If you have ideas on how to make this program better, be sure to send them
to me. I look forward to hearing from you.
Good luck with your ancestor search!
Christopher E. Long, TTEDIT author
