  13.         Ephesians 1:22-23
  14.           "And  hath  put all things under his feet,  and gave him to be  head
  15.           over all things to the church,  which is his body,  THE  FULLNESS OF
  16.           HIM that filleth all in all."
  17.  
  18.           God has used many different pictures in his word to give us a fuller
  19.         understanding of the depth of unity he desires.   "As thou, Father art
  20.         in me and I in thee."  John 17:21.  Unity of the Godhead.

  22.         1.  EXAMPLES OF UNITY
  23.  
  24.           A. FAMILY - Unity in Fellowship.
  25.              "Now therefore ye are...of the household of God"  Eph.2:19-22
  26.              Unity of fellowship is experienced when the family submit to God-
  27.              given authorities.

  29.           B. TEMPLE - Unity in Glory.
  30.              "Ye  also,  as  lively stones,  are built up a  spiritual  house"
  31.              1 Peter 2:5
  32.              "In  whom the building fitly framed together groweth into a  holy
  33.              temple"  Eph.2:20-22
  34.              God is fashioning, building and fitting together a temple to fill
  35.              with His glory.
  36.              "A habitation of God"  Eph.2:22.

  38.           C. WIFE - Unity in Love.
  39.              "...a man...shall be joined unto his wife,  and they two shall be
  40.              one flesh, this is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ
  41.              and the church"  Eph.5:31,32.
  42.              Being  joined  in marriage is the highest expression of unity  in
  43.              love.

  45.           D. CITY - Unity in Function.
  46.              "He looked for a city which hath foundations,  whose builder  and
  47.              maker is God"  Heb.11:10-16
  48.              Known  for  its elevated position,  its strong  foundations,  its
  49.              impregnable  walls  and  its  towers  for  protection,  here  the
  50.              inhabitants are united in vision,  in strength, and have unity of
  51.              purpose and function.  Heb.12:22; Ps.48:2,12.

  53.           E. BODY - Unity in Life.
  54.              "For as the body is one,  and hath many members,  and all members
  55.              of that one body,  being many,  are one body,  so also is Christ"
  56.              1 Cor.12:12-22
  57.              Each  member  of  the body is necessary,  and each  has  its  own
  58.              function,  yet  all are at liberty to function in its own  unique
  59.              way.
  60.              NOTE:   Liberty, NOT Independence.  The body is IN/TER/DEPENDENT.
  61.              Members functioning in life, bringing unity into life.

  63.           F. ARMY - Unity in Vision and Purpose.
  64.              "And the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon
  65.              their feet, an exceeding great army"  Ezek.37:10.
  66.              An army is never aimless,  but is disciplined,  prepared and  has
  67.              unity of vision and purpose.

  69.         2.  EXHORTATION TO UNITY    (Eph.4:1)

  71.            The most significant truth about the church is that it is a  unity,
  72.            "There is one body" Eph.4:4.
  73.            "Now are ye one body in Christ"  1 Cor.12:27
  74.            Jesus prayed,  "That they all may be one, as thou, Father art in me
  75.            and I in thee,  that they may also be one with us.   That the world
  76.            may believe that thou hast sent me."  John 17:24
  77.            Paul  exhorts us to walk in unity.   Eph.1:1,  "Walk worthy of  the
  78.            vocation wherewith ye are called."

  80.         3.  FOUR ESSENTIALS TO WALK IN UNITY   (Eph.1:2)

  82.           A. Lowliness = Humility
  83.              A thankful sense of dependence upon God.   The opposite of pride
  84.              and conceit.  Humility looks upward, pride looks selfward.
  85.  
  86.           B. Meekness = Gentleness and Kindness (submissive)
  87.              An  unresisting,  uncomplaining  disposition which enables us  to
  88.              bear  without  irritation or resentment the taunts  and  injuries
  89.              from others.

  91.           C. Longsuffering = Enduring (enduring patiently)
  92.              An enduring,  unweariable spirit which knows how to outlast  pain
  93.              or provocation.  Opposite to short temper, short fuse.

  95.           D. Forbearing One Another In Love = Patience (enduring patiently)
  96.              A  patient  spirit which goes on loving in spite of their  faults
  97.              and weaknesses.

  99.         4.  EXPLANATION OF UNITY.       (Eph.4:4-6)

  101.           "Endeavouring to keep the unity of the spirit"  Eph.4:3

  103.           A. We  need to recognize that unity of the spirit already exists  in
  104.              the body of Christ.   (It is only possible to keep something that
  105.              already exists.)

  107.           B. How do we keep the unity of the spirit?
  108.              By walking worthy.  Eph.4:1-2
  109.  
  110.           C. What is the unity of the spirit?
  111.              1. Paul  lists  seven things which are the  churches  essence  of
  112.                 oneness in the spirit.
  113.              2. First of all there is,  one body,  one spirit, one hope, - the
  114.                 body is vitalized by one spirit and moves progressively toward
  115.                 one hope.
  116.              3. Secondly,  loyalty  to one Lord gives birth to one faith which
  117.                 is signalized by obedience in one baptism.
  118.              4. Last,  of all one God and Father of all.   Every unity  exists
  119.                 and is sustained by him.

  121.         5.  ELEVATION TO UNITY.     (Eph.4:11-13)
