CHURCH DISCIPLINE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SERIES: CHURCH DISCIPLINE. LESSON NO. 2. CONTINUED.
2. Those who cause divisions and offences contrary to sound doctrine.
Rom.16:17.
(a) Avoid them, - have no fellowship with them at all, that the flock
may be protected.
(b) Mark them, be on the alert for these kind, know what to look for.
They can come from with-in. Acts 20:30 or from outside, Ads 2:29.
Some marks to look for - "they serve not our Lord, but their own belly".
Rom. 16:18. (a love for money) "deceive hearts by their good words and
fair speeches". Enemies of the cross, - mind earthly things, glory in
their shame. Phil. 3:17-19.
3. False Teachers. 1 Tim. 6:3-5.
(a) From such withdraw thyself, v.5.
(b) False teachers are teachers who consent not to "wholesome words".
This means doctrines of healings and health for both the soul and
body. They do not teach godliness - love for money, v.5.
Note: 2 John 10-11; Tit. 3:10-11.
4. Disorderly Conduct. 2 Thess. 3:6.
"walk disorderly" means - not at one's post of duty. Undisciplined.
They act according to their own wills. Lawless. One who continues
in any assembly like this will effect others as leaven eventually,
and must be dealt with to keep the church healthy.
(b) Withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly.
5. Not obeying the Truth. 2 Thess. 3:14.
(a) Continually walking in disobedience to the Word.
(b) Note him, have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a
brother.
6. Those with a form of godliness. 2 Tim. 3:5.
(a) "Form of godliness" means - a semblance, sketch. Their religion is
only in their creed and formal confession of faith, not in their
hearts.
(b) "Denying the power of godliness" - means - destitute of godliness,
having no faith that one can be godly in this life.
(c) From such turn away - these also can effect the faith of those they
associate with.
7. Hypocrisy in a member. Luke 12:1, 1 Cor. 5:6-7.
(a) One thing in front of everybody and another behind the scene.
(b) Purge this leaven out from your midst if it persists. It will
effect others if left just as leaven will effect bread.
8. Fornicators, who are called a brother. 1 Cor. 5:11.
(a) They continued in their sin, though having been reproved. If they
continue and are left in the Church, it can ruin the testimony of
the Church as well as kill it spiritually.
(b) Deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh
that the spirit may be saved.. 1 Cor. 5:5. Withdraw all fellowship
with such a one v.11. Put him out of the church. v.7, that Satan
may afflict him in his body thus perhaps bringing him to
repentance. The man in this case repented 2 Cor. 2:6-7. Showing
that Church Discipline works.
9. Covetous - desire to have more, dishonest gain.
Idolater - image worshipper.
Railer - injurious, evil speaking.
Drunkard
Extortioner - extorting anything under exaction. 1 Cor. 5:11.
Have no fellowship or company with such who call themselves brethren.
10. Gossipers. 1 Tim. 4:7. Old wives' fables.
The talker who runs from house to house revealing secrets and making
mountains out of mole hills, is also to come under the rod of discipline
It is the solemn duty of the entire Church to discipline such a one, if
he persists in spreading fables. A true story has seldom gone the round
of the gossips before it is a fable. People must be taught to exercise
self-control and self-discipline.
