  5.      The Pauline Epistles are built upon the Old Testament, the Life of 
  6.  Christ, and especially upon the Book of Acts.
  7.      In them is a detailed explanation of the Redemption of Christ and of His
  8.  Church.  The Old Testament and the Four Gospels look forward to the death and
  9.  resurrection of Christ.  The Epistles look back upon the Finished Work of the
  10.  Cross and elucidate the results of that Work.  The Epistles unfold the 
  11.  doctrine of "the Church".
  12.  
  13.      Colossians was written by Paul (1:1), when he was at Rome as a prisoner
  14.  (4:10,18) in about 64 A.D. It was taken to Colosse by Tychicus (4:7).
  15.  Paul had never met or visited the Church at Colosse (2:1).  Epaphras was the
  16.  probable founder of the Church (1:7-8; 4:12).  Epaphras brought to Paul the
  17.  report of the condition of the Church in Colosse (1:3).  This epistle was 
  18.  also written for the Church at Laodicea (4:16). Note Rev. 3:14-22.

  22.  Note the names and designations of the Lord Jesus in this epistle.
  23.  "Christ" --------  26 times (19 times alone).
  24.  "Lord"   --------  13 times.
  25.  "Jesus"  --------  7  times.
  26.  "Head"   --------  3  times (Twice as Head of the Body, once as Head of all
  27.                     principality and power).
  28.  "Son"    --------  1 time.
  29.  "Image of the invisible God", "Firstborn of every creature", "The Beginning",
  30.  "The Firstborn from the dead", "Our Life", "All and in all", "Master in
  31.  heaven".

  33.  Thus we see that this epistle shows the dignity, honour, and glory of the
  34.  Christ.
  35.  
  36.      The foundation of this church was excellent but errors had come in by:
  37.  1.   Worldly Philosophy and vain deceits.  Col. 2:4, 8.
  38.  2.   Asceticism (self-denial) --- Observing Jewish days, abstaining from 
  39.       certain foods, etc.  Col. 2:16, 20-23.
  40.  3.   Worship of angels.   Col. 2:18.  Resulting in:
  41.                     1.  Dishonouring the Lord Jesus in His Person and
  42.                         Work.
  43.                     2.  Bringing them into bondage to ordinances.
  44.                     3.  Spoiling their proper worship of the Lord Jesus.
  45.  
  46.  These errors came from heretics, possibly the forerunners of the Gnostics 
  47.  who passed as "brethren in Christ" but who were enemies of the truth.
  48.  In this epistle the Apostle Paul corrects these errors and their results.  
  49.  In Chapters 3 and 4, he emphasizes that pure morality which these early 
  50.  heretics despise.
  51.  
  52.  Thus this epistle  (1)   Magnifies the Lord Jesus in His proper place,
  53.                     (2)   Shows our freedom from ritual,
  54.                     (3)   Shows our proper worship of the Lord Jesus,
  55.                     (4)   Shows the practical life of holiness in Christ.
  56.  
  57.           These last three are an outgrowth of the first.

  61.      I.        Thanksgiving and Prayer for the  Colossians  1:1-12.

  66.      The theme of this letter is "Christ the Head of the Church" or the
  67.           "Preeminence of the Lord Jesus."

  69.      I.   THANKSGIVING AND PRAYER FOR THE COLOSSIANS 1:1-12
  70.      1.   Salutation.  Col. 1:1-12.  Paul, the apostle, Timothy, our
  71.           brother, to the saints and faithful brethren at Colosse.
  72.      2.   Commendation of the state of assembly in Colosse. 1:3-6
  73.             a.  Thanksgiving and prayer for them. v. 3
  74.             b.  Faith, Love, Hope. v. 4,5 - The 3 most commendable things.
  75.                 1 Cor. 15:13
  76.             c.  By knowing the grace of God in truth.
  77.                 Fruitful v. 6
  78.             d.  Their minister, Epaphras.  v. 7-8
  79.  
  80.      1.   A dear fellow servant and a faithful minister.
  81.      2.   Reported their love in the Spirit.  The only place the
  82.                     Holy Spirit is mentioned.  Evidently they had been
  83.                     filled with the Spirit.
  84.      3.   Paul's prayer for them. 1:9-12 (Which blends into and becomes an
  85.           exhortation to them and a praise to Christ - from prayer to 
  86.           praise), that they:
  87.             a.    Be filled with the knowledge of His will,
  88.             b.    Walk worthy of the Lord,
  89.             c.    Being fruitful,                   
  90.             d.    Increasing in the knowledge of God,
  91.             e.    Strengthened with all might,       
  92.             f.    Unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness,
  93.             g.    Giving thanks unto the Father.

  95.      II. CHRIST PREEMINENT IN HIS PERSON AND WORK  1:13--2:23
  96.      Christ's Preeminence:    He   is:-
  97.  In His Relationship:    1.  The Son of God.(God's dear Son, or the Son of
  98.                              His love v. 13.
  99.  In His Sovereignty:     2.  The King and has a kingdom of light. v. 13
  100.  In Redemption from Sin: 3.  The Redeemer. v. 14 (forgiveness of Sin)
  101.  In Revelation:          4.  The Image of the invisible God.  v. 15
  102.  In Eternity:            5.  The Firstborn of every creature. v. 15
  103.     and Superiority
  104.  In Creation:            6.  The Creator of all things (by and for Him)
  105.                              v. 16, including all angels and power in the
  106.                              universe.
  107.  In Position:            7.  He is before All, the First of all. v. 17a
  108.  In Providence:          8.  The  Sustainer of all things.  vs ' 17b

  154.           For the believer Christ is the mainspring, the centre, the
  155.           fountainhead.  This verse is the Heart of the Epistle.  A unique
  156.           gem of divine revelation.  This is the Crown upon all of what has
  157.           been disclosed in Chapter 1:1-2:8.  Col. 1:19 and 2:2 brought us
  158.           toward this revelation which is now fully uncovered.
  159.           Dwelleth, i,e., doth tabernacle, to abide or to have an-abode, to
  160.           indwell.  Present tense. NOW

  162.           All the fullness (all the characteristics and being and power) of
  163.           God.
  164.           The Father (John 14:10) The Son (John 10:36) The Holy Spirit

  166.           Godhead...The essence and nature of the Godhead.
  167.           Bodily...In a body, in His physical body, in a bodily frame that is
  168.           corporeal or physical.

  170.  18.  Christ preeminent as the Believer's Completeness. 2:10a,
  171.           "Ye are complete in Him." 2:10a. ("Ye are in Him made full"
  172.           Young's translation).  In Christ Jesus we have no lack in any way or
  173.           in any realm.

  175.  19.  Christ preeminent over all angels, powers, and ordinances. 2:10-23
  176.           a.   over all principality and power, (v. 18...warning

  189.           breathes, seeks, protects, and cares for the body (The church).

  191.      b.   Christ preeminent over the law and ritualism.
  192.           1.   Circumcision versus true spiritual circumcision. v. 11-14.
  193.                We are buried with Christ and raised with Him in the power of
  194.                the Holy Spirit.  The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the sign
  195.                or seal of the New Covenant.  Circumcision was the seal of
  196.                the Abrahamic Covenant.

  198.           2.   Freedom from judgment concerning holy days, new moons, and
  199.                Sabbath days. v. 16-17.
  200.                They are shadows.  Christ is reality.  Don't live on
  201.                "shadows."
  202.  
  203.           3.   Dead with Christ we are free from ritualism and the
  204.                commandments and doctrines of men. v. 20-23.
  205.                There is a vain display of earthly wisdom in:
  206.                worship .... which is not in the Spirit. (John 4:24),
  207.                humility .... which is not truly inwardly and of God,
  208.                neglect of the body....which is not in accord with God's
  209.                                       will.

  211.      Thus in Chapter 2 we see Christ preeminent in wisdom and knowledge, in 
  212.  the fullness of the Godhead dwelling in Him bodily, in Him as the fullness
  213.  (completeness) of the believer, above all angels and powers, and above the 
  214.  law and ordinances.

  216.  III.      Christ preeminent in the Believer's Life.  Col. 3:1--4:6.

  218.      1. In Union with Christ, our life. 3:1-4.
  219.           a.   Dead with Christ. v. 3. Col. 2:12a, 13a, 2:20a.
  220.           b.   Risen with Christ. v. 1a.  Col. 2:12b, 13b.
  221.           c.   Ascended with Christ. v. 1b.
  222.                At the right hand of God.
  223.           d.   Glorified with Christ when He appears. v. 4.
  224.                Therefore seek those things above, set your affections on
  225.                things above!
  226.                Summary:  Christ is our Life. (v. 4a).
  227.                          Our life is hid with Christ in God.
  228.  
  229.           Contrast this with worldly philosophy, vain deceits (Col. 2:8),
  230.           ascetism (Col. 2:16), ritualism and angel worship (Col. 2:18,
  231.           2:20-23).
  232.           These are earthly things. v. 2b.

  234.      2.   Put off the old man. v. 5-9.
  235.                Salvation is not a gradual reformation or process to get rid
  236.           of sin, nor is it cutting off a little sin each day until we
  237.           gradually get better.  It is not educating mankind out of sin but
  238.           transforming him in the midst of it.

  240.           Mortify means to put to death.
  241.  
  242.           a.   Grosser sins. v. 5. Fornication, uncleanness, inordinate
  243.                affection, evil concupiscence (sexual lust), covetousness ... 
  244.                which is idolatry.
  245.           b.   Other sin (some of them are the so-called nicer kind, often
  246.                condoned) v. 8-9.  Such as anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy
  247.                (evil speaking), filthy communication out of your mouth,
  248.                lying.

  250.                Because of these things the wrath of God cometh on the
  251.                children of disobedience.

  253.      3.   Put on the new man. v. 10-17.
  254.  
  255.      v. 10.   Renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created him.
  256.                The "image of Him" is the Lord Jesus.  Col. 1:15, Heb. 1:3
  257.      v. 11.   Race, religion, status, culture do not exist in Christ.
  258.                All are ONE in Christ.  Christ is all and in all.
  259.                Love in the bond of perfectness. v. 14

  261.                Contrast the qualities in Col. 3:10-17 with the pride and
  262.                vain glory of every false teaching that detracts from the
  263.                preeminence of the Lord Jesus.  The Lord Jesus must be
  264.                preeminent in our words and deeds. v. 17

  266.      4.   The Domestic Life of the Believer.  Col. 3:18-4:6 The practical
  267.           demonstration of "Christ our Life!"

  284.      The Gospel of the Lord Jesus manifests a deep personal fellowship.

  286.      Tychicus was recommended in a worthy way as: 
  287.               (1) a beloved brother, 
  288.               (2) a faithful minister, and 
  289.               (3) a fellowservant.
  290.  
  291.      Onesimus, the converted runaway slave, was now a faithful and beloved
  292.      brother.
  293.  
  294.      Epaphras, a servant of Christ and one of their own number, always
  295.      laboured in prayer for them.  He had a great zeal for three churches.
  296.  
  297.      Demas received no word of commendation.  Had he in his heart already
  298.      begun to turn away?  Later he forsook Paul, having loved this present
  299.      world, and departed to Thessalonica.  Philemon 24; 2 Tim. 4:10
  300.  
  301.      This epistle was also for the church at Laodicea. v. 15-16.  When we
  302.      remember that prophetically speaking the church at Laodicea represents
  303.      the church in these last days, (Rev 3:14-22) then the Epistle of
  304.      Colossians has a special message for this hour.
  305.  
  306.      The epistle to Laodiceans mentioned in v. 16 is no doubt the Epistle to
  307.      the Ephesians which was a general letter for the churches.

  309.      Note that the church was in Nymphas' house.  Cf.  Rom. 16:5; 1 Cor.
  310.      16:19; Philemon 2. The large Oriental home would be ideal for the
  311.      assembly of the believers.

  313.      Paul's word of warning to Archippus to fulfil the ministry which he had
  314.      received in the Lord. v. 18.  Let us be faithful and fulfil that to 
  315.      which the Lord has called us.
