  4.                              CHILDREN - A GIFT of GOD!

  6.                              TRAINING CHILDREN BY EXAMPLE
  7.  
  8.         Scripture Reading:  Deuteronomy 6
  9.  
  10.         The  goal of training children is to bring them to a level of maturity
  11.         whereby they might be able to make responsible decisions on their own,
  12.         resulting in responsible actions that reflect values and attitudes  of
  13.         the parents.
  14.  
  15.         1.  What Does It Mean To "Train"?
  16.  
  17.             Websters  defines  training as "guiding the growth of guiding  the
  18.             mental,  moral,  etc.,  development of;  to bring up;  to rear; to
  19.             discipline or condition; to prepare to make fit."
  20.  
  21.             Ephesians  6:4  says parents are to "bring (children)  up  in  the
  22.             nurture and admonition of the Lord."
  23.  
  24.             The  phrase  "bring...up..."  means to "rear up  to  maturity;  to
  25.             cherish  or  train."  God wants us to bring our  children  to  the
  26.             place of maturity through daily training.
  27.  
  28.         2.  Why Is It Necessary For Parents To Train Their Children?
  29.  
  30.             a. Children  are born with a nature inclined to sin.   It is  very
  31.                important  for parents to "train" them to discern between right
  32.                and   wrong   and   to  prepare  them   for   the   new   birth
  33.                experience (Psalm 51:5).
  34.  
  35.             b. Children  are  born  without  knowledge.   The  principles  and
  36.                concepts  imparted  to them from the youngest age will make  up
  37.                their understanding and frame of reference. (Prov. 19:2)
  38.  
  39.             c. Children  are imitators.   The lifestyle and habits of  parents
  40.                will be transmitted to their children. (Ezek. 16:44)
  41.  
  42.             d. Children are vulnerable.   They need to be trained to beware of
  43.                the dangers of life (Matt. 10:16).
  44.  
  45.             e. Children have unlimited potential.  A well-trained, disciplined
  46.                person can achieve great success in life. God has a purpose and
  47.                a plan for your children that can only be fully realized as you
  48.                cooperate in training them.
  49.  
  50.             f. Children are the carriers of culture.   The Christian faith and
  51.                lifestyle  is  passed down through the generations  as  parents
  52.                train  their  children in the ways of the Lord  (Psalm  78:4-8;
  53.                Psalm 145:4).

  55.         3.  How Do Parents Train Their Children In The Ways Of The Lord?
  56.  
  57.             The  passage  from Deuteronomy,  chapter 6 (verses 5-7)  gives  us
  58.             clear insight into the methods of training our children.
  59.  
  60.             a. "Thou  shalt love the Lord thy God" - Parents  themselves  must
  61.                have  a  demonstrated  love  for God in  every  area  of  their
  62.                personal life.
  63.  
  64.                       *  Heart
  65.                       *  Soul
  66.                       *  Might
  67.  
  68.             b. "These  words shall be in thine heart," - God's principles must
  69.                be a part of every parent's life.   A father and a mother  must
  70.                know  God's  Word  personally and be able to  share  it.   This
  71.                necessitates attending church,  receiving teaching, reading and
  72.                studying the scriptures and applying God's principles daily.

  74.             c. "Thou shalt teach (these words) diligently unto thy children" -
  75.                it  is  a  divinely established responsibility  of  parents  to
  76.                constantly  give positive scriptural input into the hearts  and
  77.                minds of their children.   Parents are to verbalize God's words
  78.                continually...
  79.                1. "When thou sittest in thine house"
  80.                2. "When thou walkest by the way"
  81.                3. "When thou liest down"
  82.                4. "When thou risest up"
  83.  
  84.                It  is obvious in this passage that the predominant  means  for
  85.                training  up children in the ways of the Lord is the  lifestyle
  86.                of the parents.
  87.  
  88.                We   can   only  train  our  children  (whether   directly   or
  89.                inadvertently) to be what we already are.   "Like begets like".
  90.                We  are compelled to closely examine our lifestyle and consider
  91.                whether  or not we are properly serving our children  as  adult
  92.                models of the Christian way of life. (Read 1 Cor. 4:16; 11:1; 1
  93.                Tim. 4:16; 2 Tim. 3:10)

  95.         TRAINING CHILDREN BY INSTRUCTION

  97.         Scripture Reading: Proverbs 1:1-19

  99.         Perhaps   the  most  difficult  area  for  parents  to  assume   their
  100.         responsibility  in raising their children is the area of  instruction.
  101.         Feelings   of  inadequacy,   misunderstanding  or  parental   teaching
  102.         responsibility,   over-dependency  on  educational  institutions,  and
  103.         improper  values may all undermine a parent's sense of  responsibility
  104.         for  the  life education of their children.   Many parents  feel  that
  105.         living  an  exemplary life coupled with sending their children to  the
  106.         right  schools  will  ensure a good  upbringing  for  their  children.
  107.         However,  though  these are very important,  nothing can replace in  a
  108.         child's life the value of the personal instruction of their parents.

  110.         1.  What Does It Mean To Instruct Our Children?
  111.  
  112.             a. A  dictionary definition of the word 'instruct',  is "to teach,
  113.                train or educate;  to give directions, or to inform".  The word
  114.                teach means:  "to show or help to learn how to do something, to
  115.                cause to know or understand."
  116.             b. The  words used in Scripture for teaching or  instruction  mean
  117.                "to cause to understand;  to admonish;  to chasten; to reprove;
  118.                to warn;  to restrain;  to point out; to enlighten; to cause to
  119.                ascertain  by  seeing;   to  educate;   to  disciple;   and  to
  120.                indoctrinate."

  122.             c. As  parents we are to give our children a basic life  education
  123.                to prepare them for the responsibilities of adult life.  We are
  124.                to  personally  impart to them what we have learned in life  as
  125.                well as oversee their educational experiences.

  127.         2.  What Does The Bible Say About Parental Instruction?
  128.  
  129.             Deut. 4:1-40    Parental instruction is the key to the success  of
  130.                             the next generation.   Parents are to teach  their
  131.                             children and grandchildren.
  132.  
  133.             Deut. 6:7       Parents  are  to  be diligent  in  teaching  their
  134.                             children the commandments of God.
  135.  
  136.             Deut. 11:18-21  Parents  are  to  be  continually  teaching  their
  137.                             children the Word of God.
  138.  
  139.             Prov. 1:8       "My son,  hear the instruction of thy father,  and
  140.                             forsake not the law of thy mother."
  141.  
  142.             Prov. 4:1       "Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father."
  143.  
  144.             Prov. 13:1      "A wise son heareth his father's instruction."
  145.  
  146.             Prov. 15:5      "A fool despiseth his father's instruction."
  147.  
  148.             Prov. 19:27     "Cease,  my  son,  to  hear the  instruction  that
  149.                             causeth to err from the words of knowledge."

  151.             Prov. 23:22, 23 "Hearken  unto  thy father that  begat  thee,  and
  152.                             despise not thy mother when she is old."

  154.             1 Cor. 4:14-21  Paul's   role  as  a  spiritual  father   included

  157.             Eph. 6:4        Fathers are to raise their children in the nurture
  158.                             (education) and admonition (confrontation) of  the
  159.                             Lord.

  161.         3.  In What Are Parents To Instruct Their Children?
  162.  
  163.             a. IN THE REALM OF KNOWLEDGE.
  164.  
  165.                Parents  are responsible to pass on to their children facts and
  166.                information  in  all  the basic areas  of  life.   This  should
  167.                include  areas such as natural life,  spiritual  life,  people,
  168.                nature, communication, finances, social customs, etc.

  171.             b. IN THE REALM OF UNDERSTANDING.
  172.  
  173.                Parents  are responsible to impart insight into life  to  their
  174.                children.  This would include explaining the reasons why things
  175.                happen and how things work.
  176.  
  177.             c. IN THE REALM OF WISDOM.
  178.  
  179.                Parents  are  responsible  to  develop in  their  children  the
  180.                ability to make right decisions.  This include developing skill
  181.                in  various  areas  of  life as well as  learning  how  to  use
  182.                knowledge rightly.

  184.         TRAINING CHILDREN THROUGH DISCIPLINE

  186.         Scripture Reading:  Hebrews 12:1-29.
  187.  
  188.         Parents  are given a charge by God to train their children.   Part  of
  189.         that  training  involves  the exercise of  discipline.   In  order  to
  190.         receive  the desired results,  however,  we must be sure that  we  are
  191.         following the godly pattern.
  192.  
  193.         1.  Where Do We Have The Pattern For All Discipline?
  194.  
  195.             God  Himself as our Heavenly Father furnishes the best and primary
  196.             example of all discipline. (Deut. 8:5)
  197.  
  198.             a. God chastens His children out of love.  (Prov.  3:11-12; 13:24;
  199.                Rev. 3:19)
  200.             b. God chastens because He is faithful to us. (Ps. 119:75)
  201.             c. God chastens as a form of instruction. (Ps. 94:12)
  202.             d. God chastens but afterward re-establishes His love to us.  (Job
  203.                5:18; Jer. 31:18-20; Ps. 89:32-33)

  205.         2.  What Is The Purpose For The Father's Discipline?
  206.  
  207.             God never disciplines His children to avenge or vindicate Himself.
  208.             He only disciplines for the good of His children.
  209.  
  210.             a. To keep them from going astray.  Ps. 119:67; Hos. 7:11-12; Jer.
  211.                10:23-24.
  212.  
  213.             b. To keep them from the calamity of the wicked.  Ps. 9:12; 1 Cor.
  214.                11:32.
  215.  
  216.             c. To draw them closer to Himself. Isa. 26:16.
  217.  
  218.             d. To make them wise. Prov. 22:15.
  219.  
  220.             e. To bring them into the experience of life. Heb. 12:9.
  221.  
  222.             f. To produce righteousness and holiness in them.  Heb.  12:10-12;
  223.                Mal. 3:3).

  225.             g. To teach them the right ways of God. Ps. 119:71.
  226.  
  227.             h. To produce greater fruitfulness in their lives. John 15:2.

  229.         3.  Why Is The Disciplining Of Children Necessary?
  230.  
  231.             a. Children  are  born in sin and naturally gravitate  toward  the
  232.                exercise of self-will. Ps. 51:5; Eph. 2:3; Prov. 22:15.
  233.  
  234.             b. Children do not know that which is right. Jer. 10:23-24.
  235.  
  236.             c. Children  left to themselves will not fulfill God's purpose  in
  237.                their lives but they will bring shame to their  parents.  Prov.
  238.                29:15.
  239.  
  240.             d. Children  who have learned through discipline to respond to the
  241.                authorities  in their lives will also respond to the  voice  of
  242.                the Lord. Prov. 23:14.
  243.  
  244.         4.  What Is The Primary Cause For The Exercise Of Discipline?
  245.  
  246.             Disobedience.
  247.  
  248.             a. God brought discipline to his children when they failed to obey
  249.                His commands,  statutes, precepts and ordinances (Is. 42:24-25;
  250.                Lev.  26:27-28).   When  we  walk  in a way contrary  to  God's
  251.                commands, we can expect to be chastened by him.
  252.  
  253.             b. Parents  of  children are also to discipline  for  the  primary
  254.                cause of disobedience (Eph. 6:1-3; Deut. 30:2; Col. 3:20).
  255.  
  256.                * They are not to discipline out of personal frustration.
  257.                * They are not to discipline out of wrath or anger.
  258.                * They  are  not to  discipline out of  a  personal  discomfort
  259.                  caused.
  260.  
  261.         5.  What Is To Be The Response To Godly Discipline?
  262.  
  263.             It  is possible to respond improperly to discipline.   Parents can
  264.             respond improperly to the discipling of the Lord and children  can
  265.             respond improperly to the discipline of their parents (Jer.  2:30;
  266.             Hag. 2:17; Prov. 15:10; Jer. 5:3).
  267.  
  268.             If  children,  however,  have  a  proper  understanding  of  godly
  269.             discipline, they will:
  270.  
  271.             a. Be happy (Job 5:17)
  272.             b. Not despise it (Heb. 12:5-6; Job 5:17-18)
  273.             c. Embrace it (Prov. 15:10)
  274.             d. Endure it and learn what they are to learn from it (Heb. 12:7)
  275.             e. Repent and turn with zeal to the ways of God (Rev. 3:19)
