  16.                              COVENANT
  17.  
  18. The making of a covenant was a custom common in Bible days which has no real
  19. equivalent in most modern societies.  It was an agreement of total commitment
  20. by which two people would wholly pledge to each other all rights to their 
  21. lives and goods.  The covenant was often sealed with the exchange of gifts and 
  22. vows, or in a ceremony by which they became blood brothers.   There were 
  23. blessings if the covenant was kept, but if one broke it he would be killed and 
  24. disowned by his family.

  26. GOD'S COVENANT WITH MAN
  27.  
  28. From the beginning of history, God has continually established covenants with
  29. man:
  30.  
  31. 1 .  Creation itself signified a total commitment by God of all He has and is,
  32.      and a total involvement with the affairs of earth.  Likewise, the
  33.      relationship of man to God was to be one of total commitment and
  34.      dependence.  God's only requirement was that man be obedient to one
  35.      command.  Genesis 2:17.
  36.  
  37. 2.   The Fall: man chose to withdraw his commitment and live independently of
  38.      God, disobeying His command (Genesis 3:1-6).  He lifted himself up in
  39.      pride and rebellion, desiring to be "as God", refusing to live just as
  40.      God made him.  Hosea 6:7. (Note: Satan had done the same thing.  Read
  41.      Isaiah 14:12-14)

  43. 3.   God renewed His commitment in spite of man's disobedience and failure. 
  44.      He promised man's future salvation, and sealed it Himself with a blood
  45.      sacrifice.  Genesis 3:15,21
  46.  
  47. A    KEY COVENANT - ABRAHAM.
  48.  
  49. From the time of Adam, God searched for a righteous man: one who would
  50. willingly return His commitment, a man through whom He could pour out His
  51. blessing on all men, in the end totally releasing him from the effects of sin. 
  52. Two thousand years after Adam, He found Abraham.  Read Genesis 17:1-14.

  54. Abraham's part: "Walk before me and be thou perfect".  Genesis 17:1.
  55.  
  56. God's part: He promised to greatly bless Abraham: "You shall be the father of a
  57. multitude of nations ... I will make you exceedingly fruitful... and will be
  58. God to you." Genesis 17:4,6,7 (RSV).
  59.  
  60. The seal of the covenant: "You shall be circumcised in the flesh  of  your 
  61. foreskins".  Genesis 17:l0,1I (RSV).  Again blood was shed.
  62.  
  63. All Abraham had was now committed to God, and all God had was now committed to
  64. Abraham.

  66. God tests Abraham.   Read Genesis 22.

  68. God tested to the limit Abraham's obedience and commitment to God's plan, by
  69. requiring him to sacrifice his son Isaac who was to be the means of the
  70. fulfillment of God's promise.  Genesis 17:4-8,19.

  72. Abraham had no doubt that God would be completely faithful to His word and
  73. obeyed Him immediately.  Genesis 22:3.
  74.  
  75. God saw He had found a man He could trust to keep the covenant, and once more
  76. confirmed it with him and blessed him.  Genesis 22:16-18.

  78. Through Abraham came the people of Israel to be God's own people, and through
  79. him came Jesus Christ to redeem the whole world.

  81. THE OLD TESTAMENT ...
  82.      is the unfolding of this covenant, and man's reactions to it.  It
  83. contains  six  progressive covenants with God's people.  Together these are
  84. called the Old Covenant, which:
  85.  
  86. 1.   Clearly establishes God's standard of righteousness.  "You shall ... be
  87.      holy, for I am Leviticus 11:45.  Read Exodus 20:1-17.
  88.  
  89. 2.   Shows God's character and faithfulness.  "Not one of all the good
  90.      promises which the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed, all
  91.      came to pass".  Joshua 21:45 (RSV).  Read Psalm 86:15.
  92.  
  93. 3.   Simply commands obedience.  "You shall therefore love the Lord your God,
  94.      and keep ... His commandments always".  Deuteronomy 11:1 (RSV).  Read
  95.      Deuteronomy 11:13-15, 22-28.

  97. 4.   Proves man's total corruption.  "They have all gone astray, they are all
  98.      alike corrupt; there is none that does good, no, not one".  Psalm 14:3
  99.      (RSV).  Read Jeremiah 11:6-8; Ezekiel 20:5-8.

  101. God allowed man to prove to himself beyond doubt that he is powerless to live
  102. up to God's righteousness in his own strength.
  103.  
  104. THE NEW COVENANT Read Jeremiah 31:31-34, Ezekiel 36:25-27.

  106. The new covenant, the last one, is established through the death and
  107. resurrection of Jesus Christ, the final blood sacrifice dealing with all the
  108. effects of the Fall and sin once for all.  Hebrews 7:27.
  109.  
  110. It fulfills and does away with all God's previous agreements with His people,
  111. (Hebrews 7:18,19) for it is only the New Covenant that gives the power to
  112. change the basic sinful nature of man, enabling him to live in God's
  113. righteousness and so fellowship with Him.  Read 1 Corinthians 1:30, 
  114. 2 Corinthians 5:17, Acts 1 3:32-33, 38-39.  Romans 6.

  116. "His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and
  117. godliness... He has granted to us His precious and very great promises that
  118. through these you may... become partakers of the divine nature." 2 Peter 1:3-4.

  121. PURPOSE OF THE NEW COVENANT.
  122.  
  123. God's aim in every covenant has remained the same, and now with the New
  124. Covenant the result is guaranteed.  God now has a people of His own, the
  125. Church, all those who have accepted His salvation and Lordship -- totally
  126. committed to Him and having all the character, power and authority of Christ.

  128.      Read 1 Peter 2:9, and compare Exodus 19:5,6, Acts 15:14.

  130. 1 . "a chosen race" - to be in a close love relationship with the Lord.  Hosea
  131.      2:19, Ephesians S:25.
  132.  
  133. 2.   "a holy nation" -- to show forth the righteousness of God, a perfect,
  134.      spotless Church.  Ephesians 5:26,27.
  135.  
  136. 3.   "a royal priesthood" - to worship and praise God as he desires.John
  137.      4:23,24; 2 Chronicles 5:12,13.   
  138.  
  139. 4.   "a peculiar (special) people" - God's own people, that He can trust with
  140.      His authority and the abundance of His blessing, so that all the world
  141.      will see His glory.  Ephesians 3:9,10, Isaiah 40:5.

  143. Our part: total commitment to God.  Present your bodes a living sacrifice,
  144.      holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  And be not
  145.      conformed to this world: but be ye transformed. . . ". Romans 12:1,2. 
  146.      Read 1 Corinthians 6:19,20.
  147.  
  148. God's part: total commitment to man.  "And God is able to make all grace 
  149.      abound toward you ... " 2 Corinthians 9:8.  Every verse in the New 
  150.      Testament which speaks of what the blood of Christ does for us, is our 
  151.      inheritance under the covenant NOW.

  153. The seal of the covenant:
  154.  
  155. 1. The blood of Christ.  Hebrews 9:11-28; 1 Peter 1:18,19.
  156.  
  157. 2. The Holy Spirit.  Ephesians 1:13,14; Acts 2:38,39.

  159. All that we have is now totally committed to God, and all that He has and is,
  160. is totally committed to us.  The history of man has come full circle, with
  161. Christians enjoying a greater fellowship with God even than Adam and the whole
  162. earth waiting for its full redemption at the second coming of the Lord Jesus
  163. Christ.  Romans 8:19-21, Revelation 21:1-4.
