  12.         1.  Strengthens Faith "Strengthens Himself Against Israel"
  13.             (Chapter 17:1)
  14.  
  15.                Of how many of God's people it may be said,  as was said of the
  16.             Galatians,  "Ye  did run well:   who did hinder you that ye should
  17.             not  obey  the  truth?"   Although  there  are  always  about   us
  18.             hindrances  in abundance,  that is no reason why those gifted with
  19.             the wings of faith should be hindered in their spiritual life.

  21.         2.  Follows Father's Ways (Chapter 17:1-6).

  23.                The  kingdom  was  greater under  Jehoshaphat  than  under  his
  24.             father, and he is said to have walked in the first ways of...David
  25.             (3).    Variant  readings  are  possible;   The  Berkeley  Version
  26.             translates it,  "He walked in the old paths of David his  father";
  27.             the RSV says, "He walked in the earlier ways of his father."

  29.         3.  Prosperity Followed Godliness (Chapter 17:39.

  31.                "The  Lord  was with him".   The presence of God with us is  an
  32.             absolute guarantee of success and suffiency.   The reason why  God
  33.             companied with him was "because he walked in the first ways of his
  34.             father,  David."  The first ways of David,  and of his father Asa,
  35.             were  their best days,  when their hearts were simple and  perfect
  36.             toward  the  Lord.   He did not make their sins an excuse for  not
  37.             following after the righteousness of God.

  39.                He  extended the territory of the nation and finished the  work
  40.             of  removing the idols from the high places.   He followed in  the
  41.             train  of  his father's earlier years of  faith.   Not  after  the
  42.             doings  of  Israel (4)  is an allusion to the calves  at  Dan  and
  43.             Bethel.   His heart was lifted up (6) - Moffatt translates it, "He
  44.             made it his ambition to live on the lines of Eternal."

  46.                It  is  while  we  are in the ways of  the  Lord  that  we  may
  47.             confidently  expect  His  uplifting.   The Lord is  not  going  to
  48.             encourage  that  man whose manner of life is opposed to His  will.
  49.             "Delight thyself in the Lord,  and He shall give thee the  desires
  50.             of thine heart." (Psa. 37:4).

  52.         4.  Establishes Order And Authority Instituted (Chapter 17:7:9)
  53.  
  54.                Regular teaching of the Law.   Jehoshaphat sent his princes  to
  55.             help  organize  the  people so that the Levites  might  give  them
  56.             thorough  instruction  in  the law.   He sent to his  princes  (7)
  57.             should read, "He sent his princes," or, "He sent out his princes."
  58.             No  real  revival is possible without honouring the Word  or  God.
  59.             This  was systematic study of the Word,  that portion of  the  Old
  60.             Testament which is called the Pentateuch,  the five books of Moses
  61.             (cf. Neh. 8:7).  Each Levite carried his own copy, indicating that
  62.             copies  may have been rare.   This was the beginning of  religious
  63.             education  outside the home and Temple.   It is the only record of
  64.             this kind of mission (cf.  2 Kings 23:2 and Neh. 8:3-18, where the
  65.             law was also taught, although under different circumstances).

  67.         Note the pitfalls of being unequally yoked.

  69.             "Now Jehoshaphat joined affinity with Ahab" (chap. 18:1).
  70.  
  71.             After  the  friendship  was formed  there  came,  of  course,  the
  72.             fellowship.  "He went down to Ahab to Samaria."  The ungodly Ahabs
  73.             are  ever ready enough to have the servants of God to come down to
  74.             their  level.    Nehemiah  joined  no  affinity  with  Tobiah  and
  75.             Sanballat.   His answer to them was,  "I am doing a great work, so
  76.             that   I  cannot  come  down."   (Be  not  unequally  yoked   with
  77.             unbelievers.    What   fellowship  hath  light   with   darkness?)
  78.             Difficulties  arise.   "The captain of the chariots compassed  him
  79.             about, but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the Lord helped him" (v. 30,
  80.             31).  The king of Israel disguised himself, but an arrow shot at a
  81.             venture found him out.  Jehoshaphat confessed and was saved.

  83.         5.  Seeking The Restoration Of Others.
  84.  
  85.             "Jehoshaphat went out again through the people,...and brought them
  86.             back unto the Lord God" (chap.  19:4).   If they had been led away
  87.             from  the Lord through his evil example,  now that he was restored
  88.             in heart,  he loses no time in using his influence for their good.
  89.             The best work we can do for our fellowmen is to bring them back to
  90.             God.   In  bringing them to Him,  we bring them to the  source  of
  91.             peace, power, and plenty.  We may bring them back to sobriety, and
  92.             to the Church,  without bringing them back to God.  Those who seek
  93.             to bring men to God show their faith in Him.

  95.         6.  Justifying The Ways of God
  96.  
  97.             "Now  let  the  fear of the Lord be with you,...for  there  is  no
  98.             iniquity with the Lord our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking
  99.             of  gifts"  (v.7).   These words were spoken to the judges in  the
  100.             land.   The basis of their actions was to be the righteousness  of
  101.             God.   There is no false dealings with Him, no respect of persons,
  102.             no taking of bribes.  Jehoshaphat found this out to his sorrow and
  103.             loss when he joined affinity with Ahab,  and went to war with him,
  104.             although Micaiah had warned him in the Name of God about it.   But
  105.             he  has  learned a lesson,  so he now testifies that there  is  no
  106.             unrighteousness  with  God.   He will not be bribed to  "help  the
  107.             ungodly."   "He is the Rock,  His work is perfect,  a God of truth
  108.             and without iniquity, just and right is He" (Deut. 32:4).

  110.         7.  Warning Them of the Evils of Backsliding
  111.  
  112.             "Warn them that they trespass not against the Lord,  and so  wrath
  113.             come  upon  you,  and upon your brethren" (v.10).   "Burnt  bairns
  114.             dread  the fire."  The king has learned by bitter experience  that
  115.             there  is  a vital connection between the trespass of men and  the
  116.             wrath of God.   Man cannot sin with impunity.   He that goeth over
  117.             the fence of God's will,  the serpent of sin will surely bite him.
  118.             Outside  the will of God is always forbidden ground;  it leads  to
  119.             Doubting Castle and the tortures of Giant Despair.

  122.         8.  Seeking The Help of God in the Day of Trouble
  123.  
  124.             "After   this   the  children  of  Moab  and   the   children   of
  125.              Ammon...came against Jehoshaphat to battle" (chap.  20:1).  After
  126.             this - after he had decided to follow the Lord fully - the testing
  127.             time  came.   The trial of your faith is more precious than  gold.
  128.             The time was when he might have appealed to Ahab for help,  having
  129.             made  a  treaty with him,  but he looks away from man,  and  "sets
  130.             himself to seek the Lord" (v.3).   His example is followed by  the
  131.             whole  nation,  for they "gathered themselves together to ask help
  132.             of the Lord" (v.4).   Nations as well as individuals, must believe
  133.             in the Lord to be saved.   The man of faith knows no other  refuge
  134.             than  God  Himself  (Ps.  46:1).   He appeals to God  (1)  as  the
  135.             Almighty  One(v.6);  (2)  as  the Faithful One(v.7);  (3)  as  the
  136.             Trusted  One.   "Our  eyes are upon thee"  (v.12).   Whatever  thy
  137.             trouble is, seek help from God and expect it.

  139.         9.  Receives Answers

  141.             Jehoshaphat's  faith  in God is further evidenced by  this  sudden
  142.             answer to his prayer.   The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel,
  143.             as he stood in the midst of the congregation,  with this  message,
  144.             "Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude, for
  145.             the  battle  is not yours,  but God's" (v.14,  15).   As  soon  as
  146.             Jehoshaphat  had put his trust in the Lord the battle became  His.
  147.             God  takes  over the responsibilities of those who cast all  their
  148.             care upon Him.  All the man of faith had to do was to "stand still
  149.             and see the salvation of the Lord" (v17).  How this was to be done
  150.             they knew not;  it was enough for him that God had promised to  do
  151.             it (Ex.  14:13,  14).   Christ fought for us the battle of sin and
  152.             death.  "Ye shall not need to fight in this battle."

  154.         10. Is Worshipful
  155.  
  156.             In  acknowledgement  of God's wondrous grace,  he "Bowed his  head
  157.             with his face to the ground,...worshipping the Lord" (v.18).   The
  158.             revelation  of  God's saving power has always  a  dead-bowing  and
  159.             heart-hallowing  effect  upon those to whom it comes in answer  to
  160.             faith and prayer.   The true attitude of spiritual victors is that
  161.             of  worshippers.   The  more deeply we drink of the river  of  His
  162.             grace,  the more readily shall we bow and worship.  He who humbled
  163.             Himself to the Cross for us has given the death-blow to our  pride
  164.             and self-sufficiency.

  166.         11. Encourages Others
  167.  
  168.             "Hear me,  O Judah,  Believe in the Lord your God,  so shall ye be
  169.             established;  believe  His prophets,  so shall ye prosper" (v.20).
  170.             Jehoshaphat  has proved for himself the truth of this,  he  speaks
  171.             from experience.  Faith in God must lead to faith in His prophets.
  172.             The fruit of faith is not weakness and instability,  but  strength
  173.             and prosperity.

  175.         12. Follows David's Example
  176.  
  177.             "Faith laughs at impossibilities, and says, It shall be done."  He
  178.             believed God and rejoiced in the hope of a glorious victory.  This
  179.             is seen in his "appointing singers unto the Lord, to go out before
  180.             the army,  and to say, Praise the Lord" (v.21).  Happy is that man
  181.             who can sing praise to God for His bare word of promise, and go on
  182.             expecting  miracles  to wrought.   He shall not  be  disappointed.
  183.             "Believe,  and  thou shalt see."  "When they began to sing and  to
  184.             praise,  the  Lord  set ambushments against the enemy,...and  they
  185.             were smitten" (v.22).   "Then they returned with joy" (v.27).   If
  186.             the singers had been defeated, then might the enemies of the Bible
  187.             rejoice;  but the God of the Old Testament never fails to  fulfill
  188.             the expectations of all those who trust Him.   This is the victory
  189.             that overcometh the world, even our faith.
