  4.                  THE LAW OF REDUCING INTEREST
  5. INTRODUCTION.
  6. Scripture setting Matthew 6:24-34

  8. Note:
  9. The key verse is verse 33:"Seek ye first the kingdom of God."
  10.  
  11.      The Law of Reduced Interest can be boiled down to this: We
  12.      eliminate everything in our lives that doesn't add up to, or
  13.      relate to, the Kingdom of God.  We don't have a lot of
  14.      things to worry about that we worried about before.  We only
  15.      seek His Kingdom and then God begins to provide as He sees
  16.      fit.

  18. 1.   Singleness of purpose
  19.  
  20.      v24. "No man can serve two masters."
  21.  
  22.      Here is the ultimatum: "No man can serve two masters: for
  23.      either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he
  24.      will hold to the one and despise the other.  Ye cannot serve
  25.      God and mammon."
  26.  
  27.      Mammon could be defined as earthly interests: money, meat,
  28.      drink, clothing.  If we establish an inner god, we are bound
  29.      to serve that god-first priority-loyalty-love.  Cannot has
  30.      to do with ability - not desire.  Once our desire is fixed,
  31.      our ability is limited.

  33.      To help us see the finality of that word cannot, note that
  34.      it is the same word that is used in John 3:5 where Jesus
  35.      told Nicodemus, "Except a man be born again, he cannot enter
  36.      the kingdom of God." We often glibly quote that verse, not
  37.      realising that Jesus placed the same distinction upon
  38.      advancement in the Kingdom as He did upon entrance into the
  39.      Kingdom.  "Ye cannot serve two masters." So we must choose
  40.      one.

  42. WE ONLY HAVE ONE MASTER. Matt.6:24.

  44.      A literal translation of this verse gives us a clearer view
  45.      of what Jesus is saying here,
  46.  
  47.      "No man can be a slave to two owners"
  48.  
  49.      We can now see the  further thought in Matt.6:25
  50.      "Therefore I say unto you be not anxious."
  51.  
  52.       The Roman slave owner was compelled by law to provide for
  53.      his slaves welfare, how much more to God! We are his
  54.      servants, He will-care for us.
  55.  
  56.      Jesus is implying that in our relationships to God we have
  57.      no rights of our own.  He is the undisputed master of our
  58.      lives.  It is this that should put us at peace, because we
  59.      are His responsibility.

  61. 2.    Simplicity of trust

  63.      v.25. " take no thought of ------------------- to verse 32
  64.      ---- Your heavenly Father knoweth."
  65.  
  66.      What Jesus is driving at! He wants to establish in us an
  67.      attitude of dependence that can accept the material
  68.      blessings without becoming independent and developing the
  69.      "Who needs God?" approach.  Equally anxious is He for us to
  70.      come to the place where we do not always need to be in a
  71.      financial crisis to have a feeling of dependency.

  73.      God knows how to create dependence, as well as knowing how
  74.      to bring us to a security that is deep and lasting through
  75.      accepting the teachings of the Law of Reduced Interest.  He
  76.      is working for eternal results rather than the temporal.
  77.      Paul, in 1 Timothy 6:8, says this: "And having food and
  78.      raiment let us be therewith content." If you can learn the
  79.      lesson of contentment, along with dependence upon Him as
  80.      Provider, He will bless you, Wisdom is needed in handling
  81.      all of His gifts.  They are to be invested-not wasted! We
  82.      are not to "think money" for the sake of money, or what it
  83.      will gain for us personally-but we do have a responsibility.
  84.      We are to relate our thoughts to how money can serve Kingdom
  85.      purposes.

  87.      Do you remember Paul's saying, "I know both how to be
  88.      abased, and . . . to abound" (Philippians 4:12)? He had
  89.      become rightly related to "things," and having them, or not
  90.      having them, did not affect in any way his relationship to
  91.      his heavenly Father.  This is what

  94. NO PROBLEM OF PROVISION (MATT. 6:25-34).

  115.      Jesus is pressing us to have trust in Him.  We are not to
  116.      worry In these ten verses Jesus sets out six different
  117.      arguments and defences against worry.
  118.  
  119. 1.   God gave us life (verse 25), therefore we can trust him to'
  120.      give us food to sustain it.
  121.  
  122. 2.   God looks after the birds, can't He look after us (verse 26)

  128.      It is not that the birds do not work.  It has been said that
  129.      no-one works harder than the average sparrow to make a
  130.      living; the point that Jesus is making is that they do not
  131.      worry.
  132. 3.   Worry anyway is useless (verse 27) It does not achieve a
  133.      single thing.

  138. 4.   If God gives such beauty to a short-lived flower, how much
  139.      more will he care for men? (verse 30)

  144. 5.   A Christian cannot worry because He believes in the Love of
  145.      God (verse 32)

  152. 6.   Worry can be defeated by:

  154.      Concentrating on the kingdom of God (verse 33).............

  160.      This brings us to verse 33 and 34.  After making it very
  161.      explicit what we are not to have uppermost in our thinking,
  162.      Jesus gives the positive command, "Seek ye first the kingdom
  163.      of God and his righteousness  He,  also,  gives  the
  164.      result   of   such   thinking, and all these -things shall
  165.      be added unto you."

  167.      The food, the drink, and the clothing are -guaranteed to
  168.      those first seek the Kingdom.  This is our aim in these
  169.      Bylaws: seeking to learn how to live and act and think as
  170.      Kingdom citizens.  When we learn these lessons, here is our
  171.      assured reward: The Father will be looking out for our every
  172.      interest-wanting-waiting to supply our every need.

  174. 3 .  Sincerity of intent.
  175.      V33 But seek ye first , the kingdom.,
  176. Conclusion v.34.
  177.      Don't borrow tomorrows trouble      ----------------
  178.      The interest rate is too high."

  180.      "Seek ye first . . . " Let me give you my translation of
  181.      this verse: "Reduce all your interests to this-seek first
  182.      the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added to
  183.      you." Notice "thing-s"-plural! Materialism has a mighty
  184.      strong pull.  Jesus' words of warning at the opening of the
  185.      lesson were, "No man . . . Ye cannot!" (See v. 24.)
