  19. This is saying Christian Principles should be:
  20. 1.  Do not retaliate. v. 39 - Rom. 12:14.
  21. 2.  Do more than required.  v. 40-41.
  22. 3.  Be kind and generous. v. 42.

  24. I. THE LAW OF RETALIATION.
  25.  
  26. This had been laid down in the Old Testament no fewer than
  27. three times - Exodus 21-25 ; Lev, 24:19,20 ; Deut. 19:21.
  28. This has often been quoted as the most savage, blood-thirsty
  29. and merciless law of the Old Testament. But:-
  30.  
  31. 1.  The Law of "Tit for Tat."  So far from being a savage and
  32.     blood-thirsty law, is in fact the beginning of mercy.  It
  33.     limited vengeance.  We see some tribes vendetta of
  34.     vengeance was annihilation.  This law deliberately limits
  35.     vengeance.  Limited to the one who committed the injury
  36.     to be punished, and the punishment was to be no more than
  37.     the equivalent of the injury to the inflicted.  It is a
  38.     law of mercy not savagery.

  40. 2.  This law never gave the individual the right of personal
  41.     vendetta.  But it was a law for a judge in a law court to
  42.     assess punishment and penalty. Exodus 21.
  43.     We see interestingly enough this coming out in our own
  44.     law courts.  Because the Jewish Jurists argued rightly
  45.     that to carry it out literally might in fact be the
  46.     reverse of justice, because it might involve the
  47.     displacement of a good eye, tooth, limb.  And so the
  48.     injury done was assessed at a money value.
  49.

  68. 3.   The injured person came to be looked upon as a slave, to
  69.      be sold in a market place.  His value before and after the
  70.      injury was assessed, and the person responsible for the
  71.      injury had to pay the difference.  Pain, healing, loss of
  72.      working time, medical expenses all were assessed.  So really
  73.      it is strangely modern.

  75.      Jesus however obliterates the very principle of that law,
  76.      because retaliation, however controlled and restricted, has
  77.      no place in the Christian life.

  80. II. GOD DEMANDS WE BE FLEXIBLE.
  81.  
  82. A.  A dead branch will snap when bent, it is not flexible.
  83.  
  84. B.  Phil. 4:11-13:
  85.     Paul says, "I have learned . . . I know both how to be
  86.     abused and how to abound . . . I can do all things
  87.     through Christ which strengtheneth me."
  88.  
  89. C.  I know how to have money and how to be broke.
  90.     SURF AND TURF = FISH AND CHIPS when I'm poor,
  91.      "    "   "   = LOBSTER AND STEAK when I'm rich.
  92.  
  93. 1.  LEARN TO BE FLEXIBLE.
  94.  
  95.      "Doth the Potter over the clay?"  Rom. 9:21.
  96.      By allowing certain situations to come, God teaches us to
  97.      be flexible.
  98.  
  99. 2.  FORGET ABOUT RESENTMENT AND RETALIATION.
  100.  
  101.      ie:- The evil person that injures you, don't bear a grudge,
  102.      nor avenge your self.
  103.      Don't justify yourself let God do it. Our part is to love,
  104.      love ,love. Do them good and let God deal with them. We are
  105.      to resist evil in our actions, words, or thoughts.
  106.      Now this is not possible for the Natural man. But it is
  107.      possible for the child of the kingdom of God.
  108.  
  109.      Christ when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he
  110.      suffered he threatened not; but committed himself to Him
  111.      that Judgeth righteously.
  112.  
  113. III. EXAMPLES FOR OUR FOLLOWING.
  114.  
  115. 1.   FIRST SITUATION.
  116.      Someone strikes you on the cheek.
  117.      SOLUTION.
  118.      Turn the other cheek.
  119.      This true story from the mission field shows the effect of
  120.      such unnatural reaction.  Two heathen Chinese young men
  121.      found a New Testament and began reading it on their own.
  122.      In Matthew they found the above situation and solution.
  123.      The next time they went to one of the mission home meetings,
  124.      they went up to the missionary and asked, "Sir, are you a
  125.      Christian?"  Upon being assured that he was, one of the
  126.      youths slapped him on the right cheek.  Then they both stood
  127.      aside-waiting to see what would happen.
  128.      Somehow the Lord gave grace, to meet the situation and the
  129.      missionary calmly turned the other cheek toward the
  130.      offenders.  The two began excitedly talking to each other in
  131.      Chinese and we can imagine the conversation went something
  132.      like this,  "Say, he must be the real thing!"  (Which makes
  133.      me wonder if it had happened to YOU, would YOU have passed
  134.      the test?)
  135.  
  136. REASON FOR STRIKING.
  137.    Now, why would the Lord ever let someone strike you on the
  138. cheek?  The Lord sees resentment, rebellion, independence
  139. inside and knows how to get these reactions to manifest
  140. themselves.
  141.  
  142. 2. SECOND SITUATION.
  143.      If someone sues you for your coat:-
  144.      SOLUTION. Give him your cloak also.
  145.      The tunic (chiton) was the long sack-like inner garment,
  146.      made of cotton, or of linen.  Now even the poorest man
  147.      would have a change of tunics.  The cloak was the great
  148.      blanket-like garment which a man wore as a robe during the
  149.      day and used as a blanket at night - of such the Jew would
  150.      only have one.  The Jewish law laid down that a man's
  151.      tunic might be taken as a pledge but not his cloak.
  152.      Exodus 22:26,27.  "If thou at all take thy neighbour's
  153.      raiment to pledge (his cloak), thou shalt deliver it unto
  154.      him by that the sun goeth down, for that is his covering
  155.      only, it is his raiment for his skin; wherein shall he
  156.      sleep." By right a man's cloak could not be taken
  157.      permanently from him.  The Christian thinks not of his
  158.      rights, but of his duties not of his privileges, but of
  159.      his responsibilities.  The Christian is the man who has
  160.      forgotten that he has any rights at all.
  161.      "It will not cost thee so much to buy another cloak, as it
  162.      will cost thee by course of law to recover that; and
  163.      therefore unless thou can't get it again by fair means, it
  164.      is better to let him take it."
  165.  
  166.      1.  Yield each right to Jesus.
  167.      2. Expect God to test His rights.
  168.      EX:- Abraham Offering Isaac.

  170.      TEST. WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSE TO SITUATION?
  171.  
  172. 3.  THIRD SITUATION.
  173.      If someone compels you to go a mile.
  174.      SOLUTION; Go with him two miles.
  175.      Palestine was under Roman rule and a Roman soldier could
  176.      rightfully compel a Jew to carry his pack for one mile.  The
  177.      soldiers were self-contained units and the pack carried was
  178.      heavy.  We can well imagine the burning resentment with
  179.      which a Jew stooped and shouldered that pack.  The whole
  180.      mile was probably spent grumbling and cursing;  and when it
  181.      is completed, the pack would be thrown on the ground with
  182.      more cursing.  This would elicit a laugh from the soldiers,
  183.      for they delighted in the compulsory servitude.
  184.      Can you picture the surprise of one of the Roman soldiers
  185.      if at the end of one mile the Jew came up with, "Do you mind
  186.      if I carry this another mile?  I haven't obtained the
  187.      victory over this yet."
  188.  
  189. 4. FORTH SITUATION.
  190.  
  191.      If someone persists in asking favours from you and borrowing
  192.      from you.
  193.      SOLUTION: Lend.
  194.      Borrow the car? Everybody and his brother asks, you need to
  195.      keep giving until you are free from resentment.
  196.      Every day your neighbour asks borrow cup of sugar? By the
  197.      third day. You Feel like saying, "Don't you ever go to
  198.      the store?"
  199.  
  200. CONCLUSION.
  201.  
  202. Jesus was laying down three great rules in vivid pictures:
  203.  
  204.      1. The Christian will never seek retaliation for any insult,
  205.      however calculated and however deadly.
  206.  
  207.      2. The Christian will never stand upon his legal rights or
  208.      on any other rights he may or may not posses.
  209.  
  210.      3. The Christian will never think of his right as he likes,
  211.      but always of his duty to help.
