  2. UNDERSTANDING THE KINGDOM OF GOD              Lecture 2

  4. THE TERM AMBASSADORS - Dictionary Definition is:
  5. 1.  An official Messenger sent to a Sovereign or a public
  6.     body.
  7. 2.  A minister of the highest rank, who permanently
  8.     represents His sovereign or country at a foreign court,
  9.     and has the right to a personal interview with the
  10.     foreign Sovereign or Chief magistrate.
  11. 3.  An appointed or official messenger.
  12. 4.  One with full power to sign treaties and act for His
  13.     Sovereign.
  14.  
  15.    An Ambassadors life is spent among people who usually
  16. speak a different language, who have a different tradition
  17. and a different way of life.  So we live in the world;
  18. partake in all the life and work of the world, but our
  19. citizenship is in heaven.
  20.  
  21. WE ARE AMBASSADORS OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

  23.    God is going to take over this mess of a world.  We are
  24. proclaiming that good news, because when King Jesus rules
  25. there will be no more war.  There will be peace and
  26. prosperity for all.

  28. THE KINGDOM OF GOD - HEAVEN
  29.  
  30.    In the book of Matthew there is reference made to heaven
  31. some 54 times.  The very fact that there are so many
  32. references to this subject reveals that it is important
  33. for us to understand.
  34.   The book of Matthew is the fortieth book in the Bible and
  35. it brings forth the manifestation of the King (Messiah).
  36. The old Testament has been a complete preparation for the
  37. book of Matthew.  The Jews would immediately think of the Old
  38. Testament when reference is made to the Kingdom of God -
  39. Heaven.

  41. A LOOK AT THE OLD TESTAMENT CONCEPT OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD
  42.  
  43.    In the Old Testament we find that God has always possessed
  44. absolute sovereignty and rules as King.  Ps.  10:16 - "The
  45. Lord is King forever and ever".
  46.      29:10 - "Lord sitteth King forever".
  47.      74:12 - "God is my King of old".
  48. Jer. 10:10 - "But the Lord is the true God.  He is the
  49.               living God, and an everlasting King".
  50. Lam.  5:19 - "Thou, O Lord remainest forever; Thy throne
  51.               from generation to generation".

  53. In the beginning God's rule was a theocratic rule.  McClain
  54. defines Theocracy as "The rule of God through a divinely
  55. chosen representative who speaks and acts for God;  a rule
  56. which has special reference to the human race, although it
  57. finally embraces the universe, and its mediatorial ruler is
  58. always a member of the human race".

  61. Eden  - Adam
  62.         Human Government - Noah to Abraham
  63.         Patriarches - Abraham to Samuel
  64.         Kings - Saul, David, Solomon to Jehoikin
  65.         Prophets - In this time with the decline of the
  66.         theocracy, the future theocratic Kingdom comes to the
  67.         fore.
  68.         In almost every old Testament prophetic writing there
  69.         is reference to the future Kingdom.

  71. It was founded upon the Davidic Covenant. cp 2 Samuel 7:8-13,
  72. 1 Chron 17:7. Ps 84:27.

  74. THE MESSIANIC KINGDOM.
  75.  
  76. Now to the Jews the mention of the Kingdom of God would be to
  77. see the setting up again of God's theocratic rule.  It was
  78. the yet future prophetic portions of the Scripture that they
  79. were looking at.

  81. Let's note Chafer's summary of the yet future kingdom.
  82.  
  83. 1.  To be theocratic the King will be EMMANUEL, for He is by
  84. human birth the rightful heir to David's throne and born of a
  85. virgin in Bethlehem.  Is 7:14; Matt 1:22-23; Is 11:5;
  86. Jer 23:5; Ezek 34:23; Hos 3:4-5; Micah 5:2.

  88. 2.  To be heavenly in character. Is 2:4; 11:4-5: Jer 33:14-
  89. 17; Hos 2:18.

  91. 3.  To be in Jerusalem and worldwide
  92. a.  It will be on earth.  Ps 2:8; Is 11:9; 42:4; Jer 23:5;
  93.      Zech. 14:9
  94. b.  It will be centred at Jerusalem. Is 2:1-3; 62:1-7;
  95.     Zech 8:20-23.
  96. c.  It will be over re-gathered and converted Israel.  Deut.,
  97.     30:30;  Is. 11:11-12; 14:1-2 ; Ezek. 37:21-25;
  98.     Micah 4:6-8
  99. d.  Extends to the nations of the earth. Ps 72:11,17; 86:9;
  100.     Is. 55:5; Dan. 7:13-14; Micah 4:2; Zech. 8:22.
  101. e.  To be established by the returning King.  Deut. 30:3;
  102.     Ps. 50:3-5; 96:13; Zech. 2:10-13; Mal. 3:1-4.
  103. f.  To be Spiritual- in that the will of God will be directly
  104.     effective in all matters in human government and conduct.

  106. The kingdom of heaven is the central theme of Christ's
  107. preaching in the Gospels.  The term "Kingdom of Heaven" was
  108. mostly used by Matthew where as the term, "Kingdom of God"
  109. was used in Mark and Luke.  The fact that the book of Matthew
  110. was written to the Jews would help explain the usage of the
  111. term "Kingdom of Heaven" in that of the reverence and the
  112. reluctance in Judaism to use the name of God.

  114. JOHN THE BAPTIST - Matt.  3:2 "The Kingdom of Heaven is at
  115. hand".  It was that which the Jews had long awaited.  In his
  116. preaching he gave announcement to that of divine judgement
  117. as a reality which is immediately at hand.  The axe is
  118. already laid at the root of the tree.  God's coming as
  119. King is above all else a coming to purify, to sift, and to
  120. judge.  No one can evade it, nor buy exemption from it,
  121. not even the ability to claim Abraham as father.

  123. John at the same time points to the coming one who is
  124. following him, whose forerunner he is himself.  The coming
  125. one comes with the winnowing fan in his hand. In view of His
  126. coming the people must repent and submit to the baptism for
  127. the washing away of sins, so as to escape the coming wrath
  128. and participate in the salvation of the Kingdom and the
  129. Baptism of the Holy Spirit will be poured out when He comes.

  132. KINGDOM IN CHRIST'S TEACHING
  133.  
  134. Christ continued the Kingdom of Heaven.  But His proclamation
  135. differed in two aspects.
  136.  
  137. 1.  While it retains without qualification, the announcement
  138. of judgement and the call to repentance, it the saving
  139. significance of the Kingdom that stand in the foreground.
  140.  
  141. 2.  The pith and core.  It was not just a reality which was
  142. at hand, but as a reality already present.  IN HIM THE GREAT
  143. FUTURE HAS ALREADY BECOME THE PRESENT TIME.

  145.  Evidenced by His Teaching
  146.               His Miracles
  147.               The Strong Man's house has been invaded.
  148.  
  149. When John sent his disciples questioning was He the Messiah,
  150. Jesus left them with a vision of what was happening.
  151. Luke  7:18 ; Luke 7:22 .

  153. THE KINGDOM HAS COME WITH HIM AND IN HIM.
  154.  
  155. The Secret of belonging to the Kingdom lies in belonging
  156. to Him.  Matt. 7:23 ; Matt. 25:41.

  158. CHRIST TAUGHT
  159.  
  160. 1.  Is something new.  Mark 1:15 -
  161. 2.  It is moral and spiritual not political.  Matt. 5:3-12 ;
  162.     Luke 6:20-27;  John 18:36 -
  163. 3.  It is invisible and internal.  Luke 17:20,21 -
  164. 4.  It is silent, mysterious and progressive.  Mark 4:26-29 -
  165. 5.  It is universal in its design and scope. Matt. 21:31,43 -
  166. 6.  It is social.  Matt. 20:25,28 -
  167. 7.  By it we enter into a relation not only with God but with
  168.     man, but it can only be entered into by regeneration.
